  1. Hi all,

I am scouring the market to get my hands on an IS 220d, pref a Sport variant, Mileage isnt really a concern as long as it is under 100k.

I seem to find that the trade in prices given by dealers is significantly lower than what they are selling them on for. So...If you are trading in your 220, please let me know and I might be able to give you more than the dealer will!!!

I only want 1 :P as im not a dealer, and please only offer it to me if you know its a good one, as there is a lot of hit and miss with the 220ds in general.

£9000 is my absolute top budget and I know what it is i want from each price range.

Please let me know as I have the funds available

    thanks

  2. Thanks for the replies. Many ads for Lexus IS250's state CVT so that is odd.

The only reason I'm thinking of changing to the 250 is because it is in my view more "refined" and quieter than the 220d, maybe altogether a bit more civilised if you like. I have to say that unlike others on here I have had no problems with my 220d, it is a lovely car, 55 plate with 60k, though I've only had it 15 months. There are some good deals at present on 250's, even the full spec I am looking for (SE-L with MM) so though I don't really need to change if I can snap up a bargain now I'll probably go for it.

I have to say though that although like all the Lexus diesels I suffer from the "lag" when pulling away, the torque is very good at middle/high speed and suprisinlgy given the praise I read about them on this forum the 250 seemed a bit more sluggish in the same range if you needed to put your foot down so still not 100% decided!

Im still looking for a 220d myself, so if you do come to sell then let me know what you want for it :) Im sure id give you more than trade in, but cant afford the dealer prices :S

  3. I'm looking to change my IS220d for a IS250. Browsing through the car ads many are 250 CVT - hope it's not a silly question but what does CVT stand for?

Hi mick77, as above i didnt think the normal IS250's had CVT transmission, it might be possible if its a hybrid as this is common in the Lexus Hybrid cars.

Why are you switching to the 250? Are you looking for a newer model or too many issues with your 220?

  4. Thanks for response Moonpig. Did you buy yours new or second hand? If second hand was it high mileage etc? I wont be buying new, im probably going to aim for an ex-lease car. I am gambling on most issues(squeeks etc) would have been sorted prior to me getting it. As you say, as its a Lexus people expect these things to be right, hopefully the previous owner of the car I buy would have the same attitude

  5. Bump...

There must be some 220d Sport owners that use these forums that can give some informed decisions???

Do you have any dead spots in the gears?

At what speed can 6th gear be used?

Everyone seems to be comparing the Lexus to the beamers due to sweeter engines etc but possibly the Sport model will compare better? Just a thought?

I know its only the gear ratio thats been changed with stiffer suspension and bigger wheels, but how does this compare the the 320d.

2 things i do know... 1) Much better looking car than the beamer 2) Nowhere near as common

    thoughts?

  6. Hi just took posession of the 220 from new , and have read the comments about 6th gear being for over 80 mph.

Previous car i had was the avensis , very similar but had 2 litre diesel and a 6 gear box.

My thoery is that the 6th gear in the is220 would happily work under 80 mp at cruise , but i think its being stifled by the exhaust or perhaps engine management?

What i mean is that there is an accoustic abnormality sub 2k revs which seems to be across the range of gears not unlike having a back window open slightly.

Has anyone changed the stock exhaust on this model which may prove or disprove my theory or had an ecu reprogram that removed it?

mpg so far after 150mile is 35.5

    thanks

Did you have the same issue with your toyota? How does the MPG compare and what type of driving have you been doing to get the 35.5 mpg?

I belive the Lexus uses the same 2.2 litre diesel thats used in the Avensis D4D model

  7. I got a 2008 IS220d se Multimedia in March this year. No rattles, no squeaks, quiet (after initial start up), 36MPG (with a lot of Dublin heavy traffic driving), 40plus MPG on runs. Incredibly comfortable, fantastic Mark Levison stereo surroud sound system,Bluetooth, sat nav, Reverse camera(how i lasted all these years without one, i will never know),loads of poke when i need it. It even warms my rear end with the heated seats on a cold morning  !!!!t may have its critics, but so far, i am absolutely delighted with it and i wouldnt swap it for any car in it's class. Remember that this is a Lexus forum and as such you will have people on this site posting with problems. Take one for a drive (do go for at least the se trim with multimedia) and i am sure you will love it.

Cheers for the response. Its good to hear some good news stories for the car. Do you notice any issues in first gear or gear changing? I agree that the rear parking sensors is a must, the camera would be fantastic. My budget is tight so I am just gonna have to sit it out and wait for theright one to come along. Out of curiosity how many miles has yours done? Some have said the car gets worst once the miles get over 30k? The car I buy will have more than this to start with and i intend to keep it for atleast 5 years

  8. Hi, looking to buy a 2006/2007 lexus IS.

Due to running costs/insurance etc im plumming for a diesel. (i hear many of you scream :tsktsk: noooooo :tsktsk: )

I have never driven a diesel before, only petrol motors. My current being a W reg Honda Accord 2.0l

Is the Sport variant of the IS significantly better? I so far, have not been able to test one. The feedback on this site seems to favour it more than the standard IS diesel. Although i havent read many comments on the sport variant. Does this mean it is actually pretty good?

I know many of you prefer the IS250 but as mentioned above the insurance and tax cost alone push it out of my pricing, yet alone the purchase price of it.

The sport models tend to be more expensive so my choice would basically be either an SE-L with MM or a Sport

I will be keeping this car for atleast 3-4 yrs so need as best an informed decision as i can get, as I am not in an overly healthy financial position. (Hence the W reg accord with 135 k on clock) :whistling:

thanks in advance for the helpful comments

  9. Welcome to LOC!

The SE comes with extras over the Base spec such as

    Leather Seats

    Electric seats

    Heated and cooled seats

    17" Alloys

    The SE-L comes adds

Memory seats, wing mirrors and seating column

Auto Dipping rear mirror and wing mirrors

    Illuminated front kick plates

    Electric ear sun blind

Bi-xenon adaptive head lights, head light washers & auto leveling

Wood trim inserts instead of sliver

That’s all I can think of at the moment. I’m sure someone will post anything I’ve missed out!

Where did you get this info from or is it just memory?

I dont understand how a car with a different engine can be completely different build quality?? The chassis and materials I would have thought would have been identical.

I need a diesel as I will be potentially doing a lot of mileage, plus my standard journey to work is mainly motorway or dual carriageway

The SE-I is a new trim level which was added in the 09 facelift

The multimedia pack was available on all trim levels as you mentioned.

"If you want a really nice petrol, buy an IS 250!!!"

I have to agree. From reading posts on this forum, the IS 250 AUTO looks like the model to have

    Hope this helps

  10. 'Finally, is there anything I should look out for before I buy one. I know about the fuel economy issues on some, but anything else i should pay cloase attention to?'

    Yes, the engine.

Hi, only joking, well sort of.

Wait for the incoming 'don't buy it responses'!

It's not the best diesel, if you must have a diesel buy a BMW, Ford etc. If you want a really nice petrol, buy an IS 250!!!

Hi, thanks for the response. Yes i am expecting a few dont buy its :D

I cant afford a beamer for initial cost and maintenance reasons. I dont want a ford either. My current car is a 2000 W reg Honda Accord executive. So i want, what i class as an upgrade! The Lexus is brilliantly specced and has all the bells and whistles my accord does, and then some. I also wanted something that was different to everything else you see.

I considered the accord ctdi but i just dont like how it looks. the lexus however looks really nice and isnt too big either. (my partner doesnt want a big car :P

  11. Hi all

I am a new member to the forums, but have been reading through them for some time now

I know how annoying it is when people post questions that have been posted before so my apologies if this has already cropped up!

As the title suggests I have decided to purchase a second hand Lexus IS 220d. I have done a lot of research and it seems to be a love or hate vehicle.

    I can only afford a medium-high mileage 2006 (55/06/56) model.

Couple of things then. I cant find an actual spec sheet for the model varients i.e SE, SE-L, SE-I, also the mutimedia from what i can seems to be an option on any of the models i have mentioned. Does anyone know where I can get access to these?

For those that have had to service one outside the warranty how have the servicing costs been? Any ideas on what it costs for basics such as brakes etc?

Finally, is there anything I should look out for before I buy one. I know about the fuel economy issues on some, but anything else i should pay cloase attention to?

any help would be mucho mucho appreciated
