  1. My 2001 gs430 (107k, full service history) has had new front discs and pads about 10k miles ago. Now it has developed a judder braking from motorway speeds suddenly. My specialist Lexus dealer thinks that the discs (or one of them) is warped.

However, at the same time, there is a judder throughout the steering wheel between 60 and 80. I thought wheel balance at first and have had that done....it's made no difference.

I am thinking that the wishbones or links might have play in them and that the wheel is not being held securely and that it's not the wheel balance or discs.

    Any expert opinion out there?

    Thanks

    Allan

  2. Hi Allan,

I had exactly the same problem with my old VW Golf sat nav all i did was use a simple CD lens cleaner that i got from maplin's for only £4.99 i would say that this would be your first point of call on this problem.

Here is the link to the one i got and it sorted out the problem straight away :)

    Tom

I tried a DVD cleaner ( without success) so maybe it is a CD Rom based system as scudney says

  3. Hello all,

I have bought a set of 2007/2008 DVDs part number 86271-0w070,86271-60w370b to update my 2001 gs430

The screen is saying "unable to read DVD". Site founder and guru Monster Mat has suggested that the heads on the DVD reader may need cleaning. Anyone know if that's as simple as doing on your home DVD player or do Lexus make it more tricky. Anyone updated their DVDs and get it to work?

    Happy Christmas all

    Thanks for your wisdom,

    Allan

  4. Good luck with the Jag! I have come the opposite direction. Bought a 2003 X350 4.2 which was immaculate. Only later did I find aluminium corrosion all over the boot front edge, c pillars and bonnet edge.

Had owned two Audis (a8 and S8) without any corrosion issues, so this was a surprise. Turns out the jag forums have jags inability to build the early Ali bodies correctly well documented.

Car was 2 months outside body warranty. Local dealer not interested, jag customer services weren't interested so I was stuffed.

Final straw was when the car broke down twice when it's Canbus wiring failed giving me multiple system failures (abs, air suspension, gearbox etc) and stranding me twice. This on a 78k car with full JSH.

Decided that those who said Lexus were uber reliable should be listened to- so gs430 it is.

  5. Just an update on my p1651 fault code. After researching the great info here and reaching out to the Lexus Owners club recommended specialists Toyoda Tech near Southampton, they have fixed the issue.

As others have said, it was the ACIS VSV valve. The price of which has gone up to £62.42 plus of course they replaced the gaskets having had to take the inlet manifold off to get to the blessed valve.

The killer, as others have said is that the work involved in getting TO the valve, meant a 7 hour labour charge (OUCH!).

Hopefully all is well now and the dreaded EML light has gone out.

Stuart at Toyoda Tech gave me great confidence that they knew what they were doing ( unlike my Lexus centre at Reading). He did the job exactly when he said he would and communicated well with me. It was worth doing the 1 hour each way journey to drop off and then collect the car to know that you are dealing with folk who know what they are talking about. Thank you Stuart!

  6. Lexus number 2...... after a quick dalliance with a 2000 GS430 which I susequently found out had been treated to a "haircut" of 200k, I part excahnged it for a 2 owner 80k full Lexus SH (shouldda done that before Malcolm!- duh!) which is in much better order. Had a rear caliper sieze and now have the P1651 eml issue but otherwise- all good!

  7. Sorry can't help with an independant garage in your area but other members may have some suggestions.

Perhaps if you post up your problem there may be some help available on the forum.

Hi Steve....it's the dreaded P1651 engine management code and my local lexus dealer doesn't know what the solution is and wants to have the car in for 3 days to investigate at £135+vat an hour

  8. Can answer this one - no they are not all equal. Had one go on my 2002 Mk2 - Bank2 sensor 2. Bought a really cheap one (£17) and whilst the ECM code reader showed it was working perfectly it still threw a code for the heater. Turns out that Lexus GSs are very fussy about heater resistance. The cheap sensor only registered 7 ohms across the heater. Apparently they need around 11 ohms to not throw a code. Changed it for a Bosch one (£70) that met the 11 ohm spec and no more codes.

Bank 2, Sensor 2 is the one under the floor so you have to pull the carpet up, just remove the trim and carefully pull it back. It is a really easy job, just be careful lowering the sensor through the hole as the tip should not get knocked. It took longer to put the Bosch plug onto the wires than it did replacing the actual sensor.

    Hope that helps

Mine need changing as the EML is coming on. My local specialist has advised going with OE ones due the issues identified above- anyone know the OE part number for a 2001MY GS340? or even the Bosch versions? I have two conflicting numbers 89465-50130 and 89465-53150- anyone know if I need both or which is the correct part #

    Thanks!!!!

  9. I understand ( but dont shoot me if this is wrong!) that on the mark 1's you put the key in the ignition, turn the key to on, leave it for about 30 secs and the car will talk to the key.

Apparently, it wont work on my Mark 2 ( duh!!)

  10. Help please from the gurus!

I have read that the interior light is somehow also connected to the central locking plip? The car still locks on the key, the light flashes on the plip - but nothing happens.

I have heard on the forum that they share a common fuse - but cannot find which one it is - is ths correct or a Red herring?

Car is one of the first GS 430 -0ct 2000

Also- how often does the rear differential and gearbox need servicing?

    Thanks, allan

  11. Well, I did it...after a disastrous dalliance with a jaguar xj, I have bought a GS 430 which I hope to pick up next week.

It needs new wheels as the chrome ones are badly corroded- so can one of the experts please tell me what size wheels and tyres the 2000 model had as stock?

    Thanks allan

  12. Hello and welcome to the club, you are never too young to buy a Lexus although at 21 I wouldn't like the insurance premiums!

The main consideration is a full service history preferably Lexus or a known good independent, mileage as you already appreciate is not so important if the servicing has been done as required.

These are heavy cars so suspension wear is common listen for knocks and bangs when test driving indicating worn components,I think some or maybe all models have air suspension make sure all this works, the ride height system has known problems on the sensors and the things aren't cheap.

There is a good choice out there so be picky,if unsure walk on by to the next one.

If you are not mechanically minded consider an AA or RAC inspection for potential purchases.

The engine does have a cam belt which requires replacement at every 100,000 miles or 7 years the job is complex and costly at around 1K (includes tensioners/water pump) so make sure it has been done or if getting near to replacement work the price down to compensate

Below is a link to a good resource site detailing the specifications of the LS430

    http://www.lexls.com/info/lsgenerations.html

    Many thanks- very helpful. Allan

  13. Hi. my wife says that I am not old enough to buy a Lexus yet :whistling: ( as she thinks they are an old mans car). But I am pretty determined  to buy an LS430 as everyone I have talked to swears by them and I read here that once you have a Lexus, it will spoil you for every other car. I see the engines seem to take starship mileages - seemn one on autotrader with 315k!

Any tips on what to look out for on the early 430's would be appreciated- especially advise on cambelts/ chains?

    thanks allan
