  1. Why is the ninth month called "September", when the prexix "Sept" is associated with 7 in many languages?

Why is the tenth month called "October", when "oct" in associated with 8 in many languages?

Why is the twelth month called "December", when "Dec" is associated with 10 in many languages?

    Whats all that about

if memory serves me correctly, two extra months were inserted, i think june and july, or poss july and august, which pushed the later ones back by two.

Digging far far back to my school days... I think the Romans added July & August as a tribute to the emperors' Julius Caesar and Augustus. They didn't want them associated with the winter months, so they were added during the summer.

  2. Get your wheels balanced before adding the gunge. Because it's liquid, it should iron out any minor imbalances itself - according to the manufacturer...

My mate hasn't noticed any particular problems.

  3. Steve,

finally got the details... Gold Seal 'Premier Miracle Puncture Seal'

    It says...

'Once your tyre has been treated Gold Seal lasts for the life of the tyre. Sealing punctures in the tyre tead up to 10mm in diameter as they happen, no matter how fast tou are travelling...'

The tyre need to be completely deflated before adding the seal.

As I said, my mate swears by it. I will give it a try in the new year.

  4. My mate has put this in his Landcruiser tyres. He swears by it Trouble is, he cannot remember the name of the product ATM :duh:

The only clue I could get from him was 'Green gunge from Wilco'...' :hehe:

I'll keep pestering him though and post further info when I've got it.

  5. Hmm.. tricky. The best course of action I can suggest is:

    1) Write to your insurance company ASAP and inform them that you are not satisfied with the standard of repair.

    2) Get the vehicle checked by the AA/RAC or other reputable organisation. Tell them all the details (accident and past dealings) and get a full report on the condition of the vehicle. (You should be able to claim the fee back from the company)

    3) Send a copy of the report to the insurance company and inform them that you expect a response within 14 days.

    4) If you still get no satisfaction, you could resort to media pressure (e.g. What Car? or Watchdog). This can often be more effective than the threat of legal action. Mind you, the AA or RAC could help in this area too...

The main thing is to inform your insurance company as soon as possible that you are unhappy with the vehicle in its current state.

  6. I've got to say it's the Novas that I find silliest. Unfortunately, my son is just getting to the driving age and he rather likes the thought of a Nova. :yack:

Despite the temptation, I rarely race them.

Firstly, they'll go to insane speeds to beat you, even in built up areas,

Secondly, I'm willing to bet that not all of them have declared the mods to their insurance company... So any error on their part could be costly... :crybaby:

Thirdly, they'd probably beat me anyway. Letting them go is less embarrasing than losing. :)

Still, when the Altezza gets here... :whistling:

  8. Also are they really going for them prices (£6.5k)?

I'll guess you are looking at a Japanese auction listing and checking the starting price.

If so, this gives little indication of the selling price. They may sell for a little over that price (if you are really lucky) however, alll that can really be gleaned from this information is it won't sell for less than this value. :)

The second thing to remember is once you've bought the car, it must be shipped to the UK, Import duty & VAT paid, SVA'd, MOT'd, registered and taxed. That bumps up the cost by a significant amount. Bargains are there to be had though. :winky:

(Says he hoping he's snaffled one! :whistling: )

  9. Those pics look familiar. Seem to resemble the Auction views that I looked through not so long ago.

Is the car on the boat yet? Mine took nearly 4 weeks between purchase and shipping. Seems like several peeps are importing at the moment.

Anways, welcome speedy. There's at least two of us praying for good shipping weather... :whistling:

  10. I know that Scorpion, but there was plenty of time and room for him to adjust his speed and enter the dual carriageway.

The point I was making is that he seemed incapable of using the slip lane as it was intended. It isn't difficult to match your entry speed with the oncoming traffic, but he didn't want to get above 30 mph.

If he didn't feel safe driving above that speed, then he shouldn't really be behind the wheel. Or should he?

A difficult one that. A lot depends upon how near you have been to having a prang because of such a driver.

  11. OK. Possibly a bit contentious, but it was inspired by the speeding threads...

A few nights ago, I was 2 cars behind an old boy driving down a slip lane entry road to a dual carriageway.

He had been doing approximately 20 - 30 mph down the slip road, and a couple of drivers had overtaken him on the entry chevrons. (wrong, I know, but these things happen).

I was around 200 yards behind having dropped back to allow him plenty of room I checked over my shoulder and accelerated up to around 60 mph ready to enter the traffic stream. When I looked forwards again, he had stopped at the entrance to the first lane!:blink: I finished up undertaking him on the verge, as did the two cars behind me. The third managed to swerve into the traffic, the remainder had to brake sharply. How there wasn't an accident I'll never know.

The old boy then pulls out into the traffic to a chorus of horns, leaving us sitting there. No-one got his number and by the time we had recovered, he was long gone.

With drivers of this calibre on the road, it's no wonder people feel aggrieved at being penalised for travelling at 90+ on a

    deserted motorway.
