  1. im glad there is some response on this, sure enough using the e-brake in its current location will work, can be a little confusing at times and disorienting too, but ive managed to get the hang of it, still havent had time to remove the center console to see how it all bolts together but will give it a shot as soon as ive got a mo, and post some pics, im sure it will make the world of difference as i know for sure my cusco lsd 1/2way diff has already made, the car feels so stable and predictable, with the torsen hmmm left alot to be desired .
  2. noby76 fair comment can see why now, indeed not a design flaw but for the purpose of drifting would really aid the reaction times and extending a drift etc, maybe im just used to cars with a handbrake being in a certain place, and now i have to adapt. Will give the conversion a shot and see what comes of it, will order the center consoles later though for now will focus more on the mechanicals and less on the looks for now :) The us market all drive autos though weird that they used a normal hand brake on a auto, usually its the foot parking brake and not the handle parking brake.
  3. Hey Matt u almost on 300 posts give us one more for the road and we can celebrate in style :hocus-pokus:
  4. Any ways for those that want to see the conversion will post pics and show if it can be done or not be done will be good for those looking for what im looking for .
  5. i quote, "common location for the e-brake is located in 99.8% of all manual Vehicles and u will see what im talking about ...." MANUAL CARS NOT AUTO!!!
  6. fair enough but i wont be reaching for a hand brake when a child runs across the road ? any one else want to comment ? Id press the accelerator and run them over and may they rest in peices .lol. Its easier to move ur foot over to the brake pedal matt ? be serious do u pull the handbrake everytime u have some one run in front of ur vehicle ? Incase u dont know what a e-brake is for here is a short description... this used also for drifting which toyota/lexus never intended the is200/Altezza for . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_brake Taken from Wikipedia i quote, "An emergency brake is a separate brake system in a vehicle for use in case of failure of the regular (hydraulic or air) brakes and commonly used as a parking brake in automobiles" So regular brakes are used when the so called child runs across the road (not the hand brake ) .... u do stand corrected now Mr Matt. Maybe u would use the e-brake but i certainly wouldnt . I switch cars frequently and have adapted well, hec i can even adapt to driving a left hand drive in our right hand drive country. But its the drifting that needs the modification of the handbrake not the parking . The parking was merely an example of how i had to adapt to suit the difference in the car . And i dont go grasping at air now it happened a few times when i first got the car, but it does happen when im in a rush and have just switched cars from Nissan/subaru to the Altezza. Dont get me wrong its a good car just a few poor areas of design . Secondly the gated box doesnt work well it often and i say very often lets me engage reverse instead of first when trying to get first quickly . im sure u will find a comment for the first and reverse too no doubt!!! However the Nissan skyline with the getrag gearbox has a pull up gated reverse and so does the subaru sti, and its a good protection measure . Now we can stop worrying about the child and the e-brake as its a last measure of braking not a primary measure !!
  7. Matt u really are work of art no children will loose their lives over my bad driving skills lol. The more and more i read the posts the more and more i realise u are trying to make this post about he said she said and .... u cant drive .... like i said stick to the question dont go making this about u cant drive u cant see u cant pull the hand brake ... tut tut
  8. Matt indeed i hear where u are coming from . Firstly i dont drift on the street and why would i be puling my hand brake in a hurry on the street, i have a brake pedal for that . Secondly im not an idiot street drifter so stop basing ur facts on *****-umptions did i mention any such comment of drifting on a public road ? Thirdly its ur condescending talk about my driving skills or lack there of that irritates me so cut it out i doubt any one else would appreciate it ? Lets let some other members of the forum comment on the topic at hand and see what they feel . This can become a poll which i feel would be fair rather then have a debate between the two of us about my driving skills and adaptability between vehicles. And the same way u made the mistake with the EK9 i made the mistake of grabing at air in a car park trying to secure the parking brake . U take this topic seriously and so do i so quit the finger pointing .
  9. not picking, just peeved that u would tease some one about accelerator pedals over a hand brake location subject lets be serious mate stick to the questions and answer them if u can .
  10. Sorry Matt, i live in Africa i have a JDM toyota ALTEZZA and its a Right hand drive exactly like your IS200 u speak highly of, so inherently i have the steering on the right hand side like urs and have the hand brake on my passenger side of the car, its a flaw why put the hand brake by the passenger..... wait i think incase they get cold feet when things go ... pear shaped or sideways in my view, never the less it should be in a place that we all used to and know it is. Picture this u drive a JDM car, and its JDM spec, so u have the windscreen wipers on the left and the indicators on the right, u jump into a vauxhaul astra God forbid that you dont as they are not the best cars in the world, prefer my altezza, never the less u jump in and start to drive and soon before you realise it you busy switchin on the windscreen wipers every right hand corner u turn, and u adapt as a driver and soon learn to drive the car as it is for what it is . But i switch between the subaru legacy B4 rsk and the Altezza and the Nissan skyline gtr34 all the time and its a pain yanking at fresh air everytime i park some where seriously its the truth no denying i look like an idiot doing it . then look for the presence of the handbrake and its location and engage the dam thing . Its gripe that isnt fair on the consumer, us the altezza and lexus owners . So im going to swap it over and make it the norm based on the is300 pics ive seen i can make it happen and if it works out will make the world of the difference maybe not to you but on a forum everyone is here looking for answers so let them have those questions answered and maybe they too can have the coke... sorry i mean hand brake in the right location .... keep smiling bud lifes to short to be serious and grump bud.
  11. lol and you "Prey" very hard dont you ..... sorry just had to use that one for a grumpy Matt like u .
  12. Ps the debate begins . have a look at the following cars . Lamborghini http://www.seriouswheels.com/2004/2004-Lamborghini-Gallardo-Italian-State-Police-Car-Interior-1280x960.htm Ferrari again on the drivers side of the car .... and if we throw a sedan four door into the mix just to even the score out a little we can use the following as examples. Audi RS4 close to drive infact on the drivers side of the car either left of right hand drive . Its known to all drivers that hand brake is close to your thigh for lack of a better description. My final example is the GT86 have a look at all the interior pics the handbrake is close to the driver again . So the next time u pull the hand brake in a hurry if you ever do use it, think about the can of coke u might grab instead since Coke is more important then sticking to interior layout of a vehicle !!!! lol
  13. lol Matt-c no pun intended, try this for breakfast, drive and own lots of cars, from toyota startlet gt-turbos, to Subaru imprezas and Sti's and Mitsubishi Evo 4s to Nissan skyline gtr-34s and then move to an altezza apart from all the inbetweens, two subaru legacys and a honda fit lol, and then drive a Nissan skyline gt-st R32 and play with all of them soon you notice something common about all of them.... yes they have the hand brake/E-brake NEXT TO YOUR SEAT...... So why would u then go and change it ? Why go and break way from the Norm ? So yes the designers didnt have that in mind and drifting and Gymkhana are the last things on their minds . But lets face it we all drive differently but when it comes to cars the general layout always seems to be the same, window controls on the drivers door not in the center console ... lol another car i drove and found weird, the Nissan primera why cause the window controls were on the center console near the hand brake . But if you really dont want to be on the same stretch of road as me do yourself a favour and do some research of where the common location for the e-brake is located in 99.8% of all manual Vehicles and u will see what im talking about .... Stop being a grump Fart and harping on about what a car was designed for, simple they stuffed the location up !!!!! POINT BLANK.
  14. Hi Everyone me again, so since i have been driving the altezza for a while now the one thing that really ****** me off and still pisses me off is the E-Brake, parking brake, hand brake what ever you want to call it . Why would Toyota/Lexus go and create a interior with the Emergency brake all the way on the opposite side of the center console. Its super hard to reach and for drifting and Gymkhana its a pain in the ***** that and the fact that reverse and first are next to each other ??!!!! what a F-up. Any ways so i did some research and went in depth and it looks like i can convert to a IS300 center console, then switch the hand brake over and switch it out and mount the hand brake/ ebrake over closer to the seat, where all normal handbrakes are found ? Has anyone done this ? If so did it work ? AM i the first one to have a complaint about the stupid hand brake location ? I am going to move it over no matter what i am ****** off keep reaching over for it and have to sTRREEEEETCHHH to reach it thats precious moments im missing out on, ebrake turns around cones and driftin like maniac lol .... Please give me your input going to order a center console from Japan soon for the is300 and hand brake boot as well . And a hand brake as well.
  15. hmmm u making me wonder if maybe i should be thinking of going for the 2jz turbo install ? What diff are you running again on your is200 MonsterMat
  16. right after a few friends have pushed me and asked why am i not converting to a 2jz-gte i decided to investigate the conversion process of a is300 . And well its simply a hand stand and looks more complicated then a simple 1jz-gte install. so im sticking with the 1jz conversion and will start saving so we can get the necessary parts .
  17. Hello Monster-Mart and thankyou for the valuable input, its made my day, but i think im going to go with the Chaser Jzx100 diff, reason being is i have been offered a car that was wrecked and i can use the drive train and engine from it hence the reason i was asking about the side shafts, sadly i dont know if the side shafts will work from the altezza onto the Jzx100 diff, I have made a list of diff part numbers for various crownwheel and pinions , Diffs codes Soarer Jzz30 Atm 41201-80029 FINAL GEAR RATIO=47:12=3.917 Soarer Manual 5spd Jzz30 41201-80027 FINAL GEAR RATIO=49:12=4.083 Altezza ratio manual 6spd 41201-80054 FINAL GEAR RATIO=41:10=4.100 is300 ATM 2jz-ge 41201-80052 FINAL GEAR RATIO=43:11=3.909 Chaser manual 41201-80050 FINAL GEAR RATIO=41:11=3.727 Chaser Atm 41201-80052 FINAL GEAR RATIO=43:11=3.909 And as we can all see each are different inherently from the other, so that means making sure i get some good ratios, the car im breaking has a lsd diff already ,but its in Japan. So i need to make sure im doing this the right way, and making sure the speedo reads correctly is my biggest concern cause if the car isnt reading correct the Cops will be all over me lol. i guess i could always get the front end first and worry about the back later in saying that ? Ps i would love to see some pics of you car and the conversion .
  18. alright in all fairness i have a nissan skyline gtr34 and its a lovely car and drives well, but we all know the sleeper look just cuts it and simply put it can be made to have an almost limitless amount of fun, all well have four wheel drive and four wheel steering, like on the gtr34 i have, but i want a car that isnt a supra, but drives like one, i want a car that has four doors and four seats that can cart a family around, and want to be able to drag and drift it too, the altezza has nice power with the fly by wire throttle of the 3s-ge motor, i hate the fly by wire and if i wasnt converting i would be looking at taking it out by putting a bush on the stepper motor side and making the geartooth drive move with the tps sensor for the traction control unit, but thats anothe project for another day, i had a 86 i loved it as old and as harsh as it was, its a drivers car the steering feed back is amazing and the car handles so well its a brilliant peice of machinery, i wish i had it still its a drivers car and i enjoyed it . The altezza on the other hand well its more refined smoother and drives like a real gentlemans car, but there are some downfalls, the lazy response on the throttle does my nut in and with the 1jz i am going to work around this and give it some instant throttle response like it should be . i have managed to find a diff from a soarer and will try the side shafts from there and see if they bolt onto my flanges off the diff, hoping they do as it will mean less to be imported and less work in the long run. i dont want the mazda sadly as thats what i have the gtr34 for, but when it comes to ultimate fun, i want an altezza it looks nice drives well and handles well too and just screams for more power. Lates face it though the ae86 has a 130 Bhp engine and it weighs in at about 950kgs and the altezza has a 210 bhp motor and weighs in at 1360 kgs so id say they are around the same level of power to weight, which makes them nice neutral handling machines and yes a suspension upgrade and rubber bush upgrade will help handling, some struts upper and lower will improve chassis stiffness and with some weight reduction you will have a strong track machine . I am some what of a mechanic i am a passionate one too and i have rebuilt my gtr34 engine, and my 86 engine, never dabbled too much into the ecu and wiring world, but i will conquer it i hope with the help of fellow enthusiasts who have managed to do what i want to do !!! will do a massive write up and will be looking for some input from people as to which way to go how to make it neat and make it worth while as a conversion .
  19. Hello All and thanks for the many responses, the conversion isnt too bad once you think about it, and lets face it any conversion is a hand stand, but this one is a breeze compared to others, the only scarey part is got to be the wiring and getting the Is200 Dash to work with the 1jz engine, in the worst case we leave the is200 ecu and feed it with signals from the sensors on the 1jz engine . Mounts are a breeze knowing that the Is300 mounts work ..!!!! Radiator is also easy to do !!! And the front mount just needsa little patience. So i still need my answer on those rear side shafts, will the output flange of the JZX100 diff work on the Altezza drive shafts ? Will i break the drive shafts if it does work ? I will be documenting this as much as possible and will offer as much advice once its all done . I know there are guys on here that have done the convertion so waiting to hear on their thoughts. I also would like to Add im In south Africa, insurance is a easy and not as hard over seas UK etc. With regards to the last post the Mazda is a good car a sleeper im not sure about, but to be honest mazdas have never been on the top of my list . Never the less im not sure how well they handle and how power they can take ? But in the search of a nice 4 door rwd driven toy, i recon this is got to be the best route, cheap, and nice the is200 is a well looking car and handles well ..... Please help a fellow enthusiast out will be looking for some advice as i have never done this before and based on what i can see there are loads of others wanting to know how its done in here .!!! :)
  20. Hello Fellow forum users, i am calling for some help, i understand so far the conversion process for the altezza, and am heading down the road to getting odds and ends. So far the list is as follows. Jzx100 half cut . Containing Ecu, wiring and sensors, engine and gearbox (R154) as well as prop and cross member, and clutch bits. I am also wanting to convert the Diff, now i am going to get a LSD unit from the chaser and wanted to know the following questions ? If i get the complete diff with output flanges will they bolt onto my altezza Side shafts ? If not will i need to change the side shafts on the altezza ? And if so do i need to change the hubs also ? I have been looking and havent seen much info on this type of conversion . All i know is the diff i have it open and a peice of crap for drifting and power, so i want to change it and better still it might be better to change the complete unit including the housing ? But i have seen and heard that the housing is the same as the altezza so this should work out . Now if i change the rear diff including the crown wheel and pinion from the normal 41.11 ratio to the one from the chaser will the speedo read correctly ? And eventually when i convert to the R154 Box and JZ engine will the speedo still read correctly ? Hope some one can shed some info i have seen there are loads of people doing the conversion, but want the nice big 8" crown wheel as apposed to the F series diff in the altezza, i would love to have a G series crownwheel and pinion .
