  1. Me and my son just returned from Santa Pod yesterday as we're into classic fords and we were thinking about going to the Japshow . My lexus was faultless as usual and returned an average 34mpg. We tend to travel down on the Saturday and stay over night at a premier inn type place and go back on the sunday all fresh and full of all you can eat breakfast. Its a 3hr 15min drive for us so it breaks it up and gives us 2 days drag racing - not in the lexus obviously even though my son wants me to !

I may not be in my lexus when we go as I'm struggling to keep it with my job situation but it sounds like a it will be a good show to go to.

  2. When I did mine, the only way I could stop the dash screaming at me was to park the car up as normal in park with the handbrake on, turn off the engine and open the door as if leaving the vehicle, then press the button next to the gear lever and put the car back into neutral and then release the handbrake. Any noise after that was stopped by closing the door. To do the brakes themselves I had to remove the wheel then I slid some large nuts I had spare down the studs and replaced the wheel nuts till they nipped up against the disc to make sure the disc was hard up against the hub flange. I had to put some spacers on the studs first as the wheel nuts alone would stop short of the disc without the thickness of the wheel itself to help it. Adjustment was straight forward through a hole in the disc once a grommet was removed by rotating  the cog mentioned by madasahatter above. I forgot which way it was rotated but it soon becomes obvious and the correct rotation was the opposite on the other side - reverse threaded. Hope this helps.

I moved it into the for sale forum yesterday. Still visible just not in the GS forum anymore.

Once you see this reply I'll have to move this thread, as it isn't a car for sale :wink3:

hi again, I still cant find my lexus for sale in the cars for sale section, what am I doing wrong ? I did try initially to put it in there but I don't know how to do it . please help thanks. Mike.

  4. Hi, I posted a listing yesterday mentioning that I was reluctantly selling my Lexus Gs430 but it has been removed. I'm just trying to understand why this happened as I'm a gold member and thought I was able to do so. Please can someone put me straight on this issue as now I'm confused.

    Cheers.  Mike.

  5. Hi, I've owned my 2005 GS430 for almost a year now and love it. Its my "weekend" car as I work in a steel works so drive a little Ford Puma to keep my Lexus away from all the muck and fallout from work. I recently took it in for its 100 000 mile service and was given a nice IS300H as a courtesy car. I found it strange at first that the engine doesn't start when you press the start button like my GS does, but quickly got used to it and by the end I didn't want to give the car back. These cars are way out of my price range but when I started trawling the net I found I could get a GS450H which looks the same as mine bar the wheels. My question is this, do I keep my V8 petrol GS or change to the V6 hybrid ? There isn't many V8 models for sale so does that make them more collectable ? The hybrid models certainly look better on paper with better mpg figures and cheaper tax but I'm reading about issues with engine valve springs and Battery / transmission problems. I'm at a loss as I know my car is problem free so don't want to buy a hybrid and run into big bills - but I'm still tempted to buy one though ???? Help.

  6. I'm really pleased with my lexus, I can only compare mine with the ls400 I owned previous and it certainly feels similar on the road if a little firmer. I've never really tried to drive it as a hot hatch with all the sport settings on as I just like to be wafted along in comfort. Maybe I should try it out as I'm getting curious now. I'll need to change the Battery first though. You'd be more than welcome to drive mine and compare as if I did part with it I'd rather it went to an enthusiast, however I think our distance apart may be an issue.

  7. Hi , I purchased my 2005 98000 mile GS430 in May and had to travel to Felixstowe from Teesside to get it. I also wanted a pre 2006 model for the tax reason. Ironically the car was from Teesside initially with local Lexus dealership service history. It had just recently been fitted with a full cat back bespoke stainless steel exhaust which sounds just right without being loud. Plus the shock absorbers had been replaced. The previous local owner had just had the cambelt done along with the radiator and a service, and after getting in touch with him he popped round with some new lexus mats he bought for summer use. A lucky buy I guess but it did have its faults. ie the rear view mirror had lots of marks on in behind the glass and the reverse camera didn't work, these were both changed with eBay items which were still pricey but a fraction of what the new cost would have been. Fuel consumption is about right with what you've been told. I went to Santa Pod earlier this year and took it steady going there to see what I could achieve and managed 36mpg, coming back I drove a steady 80 ish and still got 32mpg. I also liked the auto distance setting on the cruise control which maintains a set distance from the vehicle in front of you. The throttle seems fine to me but I haven't driven an IS300 to compare. Mine only came with one key which is a shame as the previous local owner traded it in at a BMW dealership with 2 keys and one was lost by them. I've tried chasing it up but getting nowhere. MY only other concern was the fact that the gearbox isn't serviced and is apparently sealed for life. However I did some research on line and managed to change mine a few times now and was surprised at the colour of the oil that came out. I'm really pleased with mine but find I'm not using it as much as I'd like to and subsequently the Battery is draining. Plus I work in a steel works and although I'm not immediately affected by the job losses in the news I may have to revaluate as to whether its a feasible option to keep it as my guilty pleasure or pass it on to another enthusiast . Anyway, I hope I helped answer some of your questions. Mike.

  8. I've just been reading this thread with interest as I'd never heard of Rock Auto and after browsing through their website I found I could buy a new filter / strainer and sump gasket for my 2005 gs430 auto transmission for £33 delivered as apposed to £130 from Lexus UK. That sound too good to be true, I guess its a supply and demand thing, I just wonder if the quality is as good. Tempting though.

  9. Hi sorry for the delay, been away on hols, when I lift off in top gear there is a little blip on the rev counter needle and then when I re apply the throttle the revs are around 3 - 400 higher before settling down again. It doesn't seem to be as bad now as when I first bought it but I have changed the auto transmission oil a few times now and intend to purchase a new strainer to go inside the sump and do a more thorough oil change including oil cooler, pipes and fluid coupling as all I seem to be doing is mixing old and new oil at the moment.

  10. Hi again, I could be travelling at 70 mph and lift off momentarily and when I accelerate again gently it revs before settling down. If I accelerate hard its not noticeable. Am I being too gentle with it or is it linked to the metallic particles I mentioned earlier ?

I contemplated getting another transmission for it as I found one for sale. It had supposedly done 10000 miles, was out of a 2009 model and is in Lithuania via a breakers in America ?? He said to check the label on top of mine to see whether its compatible. He's asking £550 for it but I have my doubts as I cant prove the mileage or whether it exists at all. There seems to be a lot breaking in America but not many over here.

  11. Hi all, I've owned my 2005 gs430 a few months now and am really pleased with it. My only concern is that when changing up, the final shift into top gear seams to take 2 attempts to engage. And when I lift off in top gear and then reapply the throttle, the engine revs increase before settling again. Is this normal or just mine that's doing it ?

I decided to change the oil after doing some internet research to see if this would help. Its actually relatively easy but the oil had some fine metal deposits in it. This may be acceptable as the car has done 95000 miles. The problem is you only get a fraction of the fluid out so I've done 3 changes up to now.

I actually modified my box by incorporating a fill tube into a new fill plug I bought, that runs up into the engine bay and is capped off. This makes changing the oil a lot easier. My next plan is to purchase a new filter / strainer and fit this before adding new fluid and flushing the old fluid out through the front cooler. It takes longer but ensures the old oil is pushed out and replenished with new clean oil. I'm hoping this helps with the shifting issue mentioned earlier before going down the solenoid route.

I know these transmissions are 'sealed for life' but any oil no matter how good is going to loose performance over time due to wear and tear. 95000 miles is a lot to ask of an oil and the filter must be at choking point,

I'll keep you updated as to my progress and will gladly pass on any help / advise on if anyone else wants to change their oil.

    Mike.

  12. Having just purchased my gs430 I've now discovered that there's no dipstick to check the transmission level, I don't see any oil leaks so presume its ok but I wanted to see the condition of the oil also. Does anyone know how to check this ?

On a separate note, I've just bought another rear view mirror for it as the one that's in looks filthy but the marks are behind the glass, has anyone changed one of these before, there doesn't look too much to it but I don't want to break anything in the process.

    Thanks for any reply's.

  13. Hi all, i'd owned a lexus ls400 a few years ago and regretted selling it due to circumstances, but I've missed them so much that I've just bought another but this time a 2005 gs430. I've a couple of things I'd like some advice on please, firstly the reverse camera isn't showing on the screen, is this a common thing, where to check, etc. secondly I'd like to change the auto transmission fluid a few times as you never get it all out in one go, is it a special grade of fluid or just any atf fluid ? One last thing, I've only got one key, are they a dealer part only and will it break the bank to get another.

I'll appreciate any reply's and am looking forward to many lexus miles in the future that I've missed for some time.

    cheers, Mike.

  14. thanks for the reply, that's more or less what i'm spending at the moment on petrol for a ford puma ! do you ever need to spend much on petrol or is it just mainly on cold starts & idling ? also some say that they get better mpg round the doors on lpg than on a run when there isn't much difference which doesn't make sense to me. I'm liking the figures your quoting though, it makes it a tempting purchase. if I do go ahead with it i'll have to meet up with you to show you it as I live in Teeside so not too far away. Mike.

  15. hi there, just wondering if anyone has a gs300 with lpg fitted so that I can find out if there were any gains to be had in the mpg department. i'm looking to buy one that already has the kit fitted but I read somewhere that it can harm the engine and yet some say its fine so i'm confused ?? the kit on this car has been fitted for about 7 years now. i'd love to own it but may struggle to convince my other half if the mpg figures are as stated for petrol in the autotrader, ie 24mpg average and 32 extra urban. i'm hoping that with the lpg fitted she may approve of the additional savings to be had. cheers and fingers crossed !

  16. hi there, my 1997 ls400 has a key fob with 3 buttons, lock, unlock and boot release, plus a little red button on the reverse, my question is this, is it possible to get the lights to flash also when you lock / unlock the car as my octavia has this feature which is handy when your indoors on a wet day and you look through the window and press your fob to make sure you've locked your car by seeing the flashing lights.

also i went to a classic car show on fathers day and took the lexus for a nice run out and was supprised by the looks / comments the car was getting as i drove in which got me thinking, have they reached a classic status yet ? as judging by the comments i felt that i should have been in the show not spectating !
