cheers stevet
i know they arnt much of a looker, and that the reliabilty isnt a issue
would like to know what the pre 2006 auto box is like compared to the 2007 auto box
trouble is im also looking at new and old shape Jag XK, XKR, merc SL and CLS and 6 series BMW, all V8 versions
-
Loads of advice , come on chaps, help me out or I'll buy a BMW
-
I owned a RX and had to part with that last August as a change of job meant it would just cost to much in fuel, I've since changed jobs again and now fuel is not an issue, so am looking to buy a SC in the near future
Hopefully going to go for the 2006 upgraded version with below 50k miles
Just need to know what to look out for when viewing

sorry edited original post, should have read $1000 (actually its was $982)
yeah i know what you mean about bodykits
love them or hate them
-
the body kit only covers all the black plastic found on the front bumper, rear bumper and sills, and is very tactful and does the car justice, its not some over the top full bodykit
price wise £650 shipping for a £300, 30kg, 4 piece kit is extortionate, , especially when theres stil import duties on top of that
but i suppose its a fairly big box at the end of the day
i will eventually get something sorted
-
Anyone. Any suggestion

Ok I own a lexus RX 2005
Now while searching though the internet I came across a few photos of the RX with a subtle 4 piece bodykit made by duraflex
Now I need a body kit
Trouble is the kit I like is only found in USA and although it cost lss than $500 for the whole kit. The shipping is a killer at Nearly $1000 dollars including all the shipping and handling and that's by sea
So simple question
Does anyone in UK or even Europe at a push make a nice subtle bodykit for the lexus RX
Thanks -
keep looking, there a superb motor, ive just done 100 mile each way into the hearts of the Yorkshire dales
200 miles to half a tank doing average speeds with 4 adults in
quiet comfy relaxed, and flew by
glad I left the golf at home
-
ill stick with putting petrol in my RX, if i have a long journey ill use my 60mpg golf, problem solved
another view point
£2000 would buy a very nice used diesel car that would return in excess of 40mpg, which including tax, insurance etc etc, would probably still work out cheaper than fitting an LPG kit to a RX long term
and means you have a car for you and one for the wife/husband
If we have a long joureny we TAKE the Lexus........its what it excells at :winky:
cant really argue with that
-
easy. on the centre counsol is a switch, right at the bottom, to raise and lower the car
the engine needs to be running
on the dash is a light to denote weather its is in normal, low or high position
just press the switch and make sure it goes up and down
if its knackerd it tends to pump the whole car to the max height for some reason, well mine did

Re runflats, had them on our BMW and to be honest, never noticed any difference in ride,
one thing i will say is handling was excellent as they were premium tyres
had to replace them after 11000 miles as they were ALL worn out
full set of 4, 225 17 front and 235 17 rear was under £600 fitted, which i dont think was too bad for a premium brand
downside is
runflat can only be used for 50 miles max at 50mph
9 times out of a 10 you get a flat, you will have to replace the tyre
still would never buy an LPG
if you cant afford the 18mpg dont buy an 18mpg car
thats always been my opinion
and ie always been a grumpy opinionated old git
-
check the car raises and lowers correctly on the air suspension
the big issue with the air suspension is the compressor (arse expensive)
and the auto level switches, one on each corner, these are in excess of £300 a corner
check you still have your infared headsets and remote for the rear dvd
timing belt should also have been done at 90k miles again another expensive job
-
never really believed in LPG myself,
initial fitting cost
extra insurance
specialist service cost
the fact you still need petrol at start up
and the reduced resale market, as i would not even consider buying a car with one fitted
my own view is i buy a car because i want that car, not because of the fuel costs, maintenance, running, insurance etc etc
im happy with 18mpg
and yes a big V8 petrol will be what replaces the lexus, unless i find a bargain of a diesel
-
ok just to cover a few points
30 day no quibble,
they may offer it but actually getting your money back is extremly difficult and they may also reduce the amount for any miles done
flat Battery
this is extremly common on a forecourt, and 99 time out of 100 isnt an issue, it can affect ECU systems on cars and could shorten the overall life of the Battery, but i wouldnt worry about it
warranty
most warranties have exclusions including ALL service items which would include the Battery, brakes, exhaust etc, some even exclude 4x4 systems, if its a lexus dealer warranty, you should feel secure that everything of value is covered
but the sales of goods act means the car should be suitable for what it is designed to do, and a 2-3 year old RX i would expect the Battery to last at least a year so it would be covered for a year, but a £400 banger youd be lucky to get 2 days Battery cover, let alone anything else
used car sales are a nightmare when things go wrong and it all depends on the garage and customer attitude how things progress,
best advice i can give any buyer/customer of a garage, keep friendly happy good terms, and they will look after you as they see you more as a friendly nice person than just another customer
finally, you are more secure buying from a main stream dealer as they have more to lose and have to maintain manufacturer standards on both new and used, they get paid for maintaining higher standards from the manufacturer

as above get it on the order form
and yes it can all be sorted but depends on how they repair it if it lasts, some garages may replace damaged trim, others may repair
and cleaning is only as good as the valet, check the cars, best places to look, inside door pockets, under seats, lift seats if possible, under the boot carpet, if theres dirt in these , the valet aint up to scratch,
only pay a deposit £500 tops
and if its not up to standard you expect when you go to collect the car, tell them to sort it out and you will be back in 4 hours and expect the tank to be filled, dont threaten, or shout, just tell them you expected so much more from a lexus dealer
any good garage, and lexus especially should be able to get the car upto a standard you expect without too many problems

to me it sounds more like a bad connection or an issue within the ECU
or does the car have to exceed a certain speed before the cruise can be activated
have the dealers actually seen the fault, tried an alternative stalk to see if it cures the issue
i use my cruise as often as i can, but dont turn it on till i require it

also a RX owner and an rx300
for me when i went to buy it was all about spec and miles
ended up with a 2005 plate RX300 with 48k on it
got the SE-L spec, and more than happy with it
air suspension is a delight as you dont feel a thing
car is quality aswell
upgraded sound system is worth it
and built in satnav, well why not
had one self level switch go on the air suspension already, and the garage replaced that cost for the part alone was over £300, thankfully i didnt have to pay
and a reciept in with all the paperwork for the other self level rear switch having been done last year
fuel wise the cars mainly used around the doors so getting about 18-20mpg
would i rather a 350 or 400, no not really , who cares or even notice's other than another rx owner
-
to be honest, i dont do high miles, even my 14 year old van has less than 50k on it,
its not that im against high miles , i would rather just pay a bit more or go a bit older and have low miles as i dont do a lot of miles myself
its not the engines its all the other stuff that wears like bearings, diffs, gearboxs, steering, UJ's etc etc

heres another option
i use a very good specialist mechanic and before buying my RX300 i got a quote off him
full major service
oil + filter
air filter
pollen filter
any other filters
spark plugs, all 6 of them
everything checked
everything lubricated
everything done as it should be done
£200 ish
or
oil and filter changed,
everything lubricated
everything checked
£60
and the screen wash topped up
for me theres no option, but i do get my cars service twice a year, oil and filter change a proper full service every year, and i only do 4000-5000 miles a year

i have the best of both worlds,
we have two cars, one bought new every 2 to 3 years
and one bought used every 2 to 3 years
new cars expensive as they may be, and the depreciation i learn to live with, but buy right and its not too bad
but a new car is nice, the smell, the feel, knowing its new, the reliability, the warranty the peace of mind
but saying that, having a brand new golf outside, i always choose to jump into the lexus to drive as its just a class apart even though its 8 years older
-
looking at the listings, the polish ones are copies
-
ive seen the polish ones on eBay myself
but im waiting on someone selling an original disc till i buy

all terrains are a slighty harder compound and more open but deeper tread, for off road use and can last upto 50,000 miles, but you will compromise on grip, especially in the wet
normal road tyres will last fewer miles as they are a softer compound but due to a shallower tread, and closer tread pattern you get much better road manners and grip
our BMW used to go though a set of tyres every 12,000 miles, so anything has to be better than that

Thanks so far
I'm aware of the BMW V8 issues, which keeps them at the bottom of the list
I know I won't lose money on the jag as they have been steady or going up in price for a couple of years
Merc looking old and plain now
But the SC has something about it,
As does Maserati but the running costs
When exactly did the 6 speed box upgraded SC come into play as I think I'd rather have the few extra extras at the end of the day
