Can anyone identify this piece of metal I found in my handbrake

Hi all Have just experienced the same problem on both rear hubs of my 2003 IS200. New items from Lexus at £250 per wheel is not cost effective for me. Has anybody come up with another solution other than breakers as I suspect all cars of this age at the breakers will have the same problem! Would running the car without them be a good/safe option? Any replies would be welcome. Thanks in advance John
