  1. We had these on the M1, badged as 'XJ-PS' (as in 'police special'). They had all the wood trim replaced with black plastic, together with cloth seats. Gearbox was a 5-speed manual, which really liberated the engine compared to an auto. I think the Bentley would've looked good striped up too!

  2. ....my soul, so I can buy this? :winky: I very nearly bought one of these when I first retired around 6 years ago, but was more than a little scared of the running/servicing costs. Of course, the prices are now going skywards, so unless I drop a Lottery win, it'll never happen....but I can dream!

    Happy New Year everyone!

  3. Disagree. Clearly those backing and promoting this aren't yet 70years of age

Those who introduced the drink/drive legislation weren't drunks, but it doesn't mean they weren't right to do so.

At least doctors now have an obligation to report older drivers who might be losing some of their abilities.

Of course there are other motorists who might do us harm through their incompetence and lack of regard, but should one particular group be protected from standards that are applied to others just because of their age? Should we be pro-active in an attempt to reduce risks? Or should they be allowed to 'soldier on' regardless because, for example, 'its their only way of getting around'? We all know that, with age, both physical and mental ability tend to decline. If a new, younger, driver went for a test and had reactions so slow that he was a risk to others, would he, should he, be given a 'pass'?

Like I said, I think we should all be re-tested regularly anyway. At present, re-tests can only be ordered by a court under certain circumstances - its a reactive process, something has to already have happened for it to be applied.

  4. Smoking in vehicles with under 18's in the vehicle has been in force since 2014 but does not seem to be enforced. I can't fathom out why it is illegal to smoke whilst driving a motorhome carrying anyone under 18, but once parked they can smoke as much as they like.

The clue is in the word 'motorhome'. Parked up, it becomes other than a vehicle, under certain circumstances.

Any new motoring legislation introduced is fairly academic anyway - there's hardly anyone out there enforcing it. There are plenty of nothing-to-do HATOs though, together with the odd smattering of not-very-interested PCSOs! :D

  5. Picture this......cager sat in his/her car, stationary or crawling along, mobile glued to their ear. Bloody great BMW bike trickles past to the right, size 11 left hand gracefully caressing their driver's door window whilst .....gesticulating, all of 8" from their face. They notice, I'm sure. :D Tbh, I couldn't really care less whether they do or don't, it makes me feel better. :winky:

  6. From the list of things you had to operate it would seem that you would also be perfectly capable of using a phone whilst driving if you wanted to. I would think that there are many motorists who feel just as confident as you appear to but in spite of your fantastic abilities and your instant risk assessments it is still a potentially dangerous thing to turn and look at vehicles whilst riding with one hand as you give your handsignal to them. If you were a policeman on patrol and saw a motorcyclist doing that I feel certain that you would pull them in. Other people should be concerned in spite of the fact that you say they shouldn't.

I don't recall mentioning turning and looking....just the hand gesture! :D

My 'fantastic abilities' were hammered into me during what is probably the most intense on-road riding course available anywhere. I'm not perfect when driving or riding, far from it, but I can, and do, still apply the skills I learnt. 'Instant risk assessments'? Yep, all the time - doing warp factor 10 on public roads necessitated that particular skill, and I apply what I learnt every single time I ride or drive. Anyway, the odd gesture to deserving idiots lets them know what other motorists think. :winky:

If I were still in the job and saw a motorist gesticulating (safely!) at another motorist using a mobile, which one do you think would get a pull?!

  7. I totally agree that these morons should be subjected to higher penalties. Replace Highways patrols with Police patrols would help and cost about the same.

With your background Pete I am really surprised at your comment on hand signal. Apart from the fact that they probably wouldn't notice it if they are busy doing other things. It might be safer to keep your hands on the handlebars and concentrate on your own riding instead of adopting futile and rather silly handsignals.

After 30-odd years of 'background' I do feel entitled these days to sometimes revert to a somewhat more heartfelt approach! And believe me, most of them do notice. :D

And, after rather a long time riding for a living, sometimes at high speeds, mostly on far-from-empty roads, I'm very well practiced in multi-tasking whilst riding - radios didn't answer themselves, VASCAR didn't operate itself, that sort of thing - and my skill set is still there, so the odd, well-deserved hand gesture (after a risk assessment, of course....), is nothing for anyone else to be concerned about! Thanks for the advice though. :winky:

  8. The proposals include the mention of 6 points for HGV drivers caught, rather than 4 for car drivers. I quite agree that HGV drivers should be hit harder. While I'm out and about on my motorbike, sitting nice and high up, its frightening how many drivers I see fiddling with their mobiles. The really annoying thing is that nothing they're doing will be in the slightest bit important, it'll be inane nonsense!

I take great delight whilst filtering in giving such idiots a very special hand gesture......

  9. Well, because a mandatory prison sentence isn't necessarily proportionate. The threat of imprisonment is there as an option for more serious breaches of the law, or for an offence with aggravating factors.

A survey of 2000 people 'equates' to three quarters of a million motorists 'planning' to flout the law, apparently. That's another really lazy bit of journalism typical of the stuff on motoring.co.uk. And that extrapolation of the figures is then quoted as a fact by some bloke working for the Co-op Insurance folk!

Its stuff worthy of a Daily Mail headline, methinks!

  10. Thanks for all the responses, they've given me food for thought....

Tow quick questions about snow tyres: -

    1. Which make would you recommend (heard Falken are decent for a decent price?)

    2. Would you put them only on the drive wheels (my mate is a taxi driver in Aviemore and he does this - certainly it's a FWD car)

    Thanks guys

Falken are decent enough, but my 'winter' of choice is the Avon Ice Touring ST - I've got them on my IS250 now, and have previously used them on a SAAB 9-5 Aero and a Renault Espace. My wife also has them on her Doblo van. They've made each one of those vehicles unstoppable in snow, be it fresh powdery stuff, or the compacted, part-frozen variety. Camskill have them at very keen prices, 0n par with the usually-cheaper German suppliers.

As above, you really need winters on all 4 tyres.

  11. Managed to try mine out this morning in around 1.5" of the dreaded white stuff! The IS sailed up the hill outside our house - the guy across the road had real problems in his Hyundai i40!

This may be of interest to anyone concerned about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres -
