  1. This happened to me. An air con specialist rang Lexus and the two pipes going to the rear were about £950! Fitting would also be difficult and costly.

He capped it off for me (near the battery) and regassed it for £240 incl vat.

Only then did I realise I have hardly used the rear as there are usually only two of us. To be honest over the years I have never noticed. Cold air will go to the back any way just like a 'normal' car. You will loose the small fridge box but I never used it anyway.

  2. On my Prius when the 12v Battery started to go out, the wipers went wacky, the lights on the dash went crazy, and the car alarm when odd. New Battery....all was back to normal.

Modern cars and hybrids are very sensitive to a good strong 12v Battery. Even the power steering on some FIATs will go wonky if the Battery is iffy.

Never jump start a hybrid, the electrics will blow out and cost a fortune. Hybrids work by the 12v Battery telling the computer to start the engine. You cannot and must not 'shock' it into action.

  3. More trickle charging is probably the answer. On a run I have checked the alternator and it gives out a good charge. The Battery is then fine for ages.

I got the first Battery from Halfords as it was £99 minus a 10% discount at the time so a really good price. My daughter had a 5 year Duracell that failed in her Panda at 4 years 8 months. Luckily she had all the paperwork and Euro Car Parts replaced it immediately with a Varta 4 year Battery. This has never let her down, ever after the car sat for a month.

Funny thing is I had a Battery in my Mercedes for 9+ years. However, that was an old top-up liquid Battery. I reckon these new jelly ones that are there because they are 1). maintenance free 2). most people today would not know how to top up a Battery. I think they are inferior.

A friend of ours said recently how awkward a dip-stick was compared to a 'low oil light', even though a dip stick (if metal) is completely accurate and has been successfully working for 120 years!

  4. 2002 LS430.

In May 2020 I bought a 5 year Yusua Battery at Halfords.

All OK for two years (I trickle charge it occasionally to preserve it), then it started to fail. Halfords tested it and said it needed replacing, which they did with the same Battery.

18 months on another failure. Car stood for 2 weeks over Christmas after having done a 100 mile round trip. This time it was so flat the ignition would not work, central looking not working, and I could not get into the boot. My trickle Battery charger said it was faulty and would not accept any charge at all.

Off to Halfords and it was so bad it did not ever register anything on their Battery testing machine. This time they replaced it with a slightly smaller Halfords 4 year Battery they had in stock (it was manufactured in July 2023), so I charged it up. Fitted it and all is well.

Is this just bad luck, or me, or the car?

Have to say Halfords were first class in replacing it twice. Are Halfords batteries any good. Who makes them?

  5. UPDATE

Sorry for the delay. Eventually went with Lexus discs and pads. Now they cost about £420 delivered. I was going to do them myself but in the end got my local F1 Autocenter to do them as it is so much easier up in the air. £140 for the lot including a brake fluid change. After about 300 miles they are nicely bedded in. Much more bite and much improved. Lexus Direct were actually cheaper than Pagid. I wonder who makes them for Lexus.

  6. It is a 12volt Battery. It 'tells' the big Battery to awake and start up.

I have had a Prius in the same mode. A 5 year Bosch Battery was top drawer and did the job perfectly.

My LS430 is on a Yuasa 5 year guarantee Battery from Halfords (best price at the time).

Buy the best Battery for the price.

Lexus do not make batteries...... they buy them in. A Lexus Battery is another brand...... made to look like a Lexus posh Battery.

  7. I have to say, on 'tricky electrical issues' an real auto electrician is the best course.

A good auto electrician with all his testing gear will have it found and fixed in one hour tops. They just do auto electrics. That is their stock in trade. A mobile guy is OK, but find a real auto electrician shop. Once had a tricky headlight. In 25 minutes it was fixed. VW would have replaced the whole headlight unit by a 'fitter' at £150+++.

Merely replacing parts is very expensive. A good electrician will find it in 30 minutes.

This is a great thread all, does anyone have the part number for the oil filter or recommend a specific 3rd party one - or is OEM the way to go? I know for example K&N produce an oil filter for the LS430.

Finally, where can I find the oil capacity of the LS430 4.3 engine in Litres? I've looked through the user manual which recommends 5W-30 (for UK) but doesn't say how much oil it needs if I'm going to do an oil change myself.

The oil filter = Toyota  part number 90915-YZZJ4

Oil drain plug Toyota blue washer, = part number T900080-43037

New Toyota air filter = Toyota part number: 17801-50030

Mann oil filter W712/83 which fits a 3 litre Camry also is a perfect fit, and of equal top quality.

I would agree, the Impul Granz do at least look different as a statement, where as the ebay offering seems to have taken a Mk3 wheel and made it look 'well tacky and naff' IMHO.

The fun and gmaes I had as a teenager with my chromed racing bike and trying to keep that looking nice on UK roads, no way I want chrome on any car of mine these days.

There is only one question to ask.....are they elegant. I think not.

  10. My mats were covered in grease from a petrol station.

    Put in the bath.

I used Swarfega on the black grease, then wet, and use Vanish carpet cleaner and a nail brush, from the £1 shop.

     https://www.poundland.co.uk/70093-vanish-hand-shampoo-clean-and-carpet-cleaner-450ml/

Then rinse off under the tap.

Drain for 10 mins then put on the washing line facing the sun.

One day later perfect carpets, that smell brilliant.
