I think you'll find your turbo wastegate is stuck. I had the the same problem with my is220d.

I'm sorry to have to say this but the lexus is220d is a total ball ache.  It was one problem after another during my short ownership.  Best thing I ever did was trade it in.

maybe i`ve been lucky so far :-)  owned it for over 4 years now and this is the first i`ve had any problem , its probably the second best car i`ve ever owned :-))))

    Welcome John.

As Steve has mentioned, it is rare for a turbo to spontaneous fail.

If you put your hand into the front of the turbo and spun something cone shaped with fins on then that is the compressor, which seems to be fine.

No warning lights on the dash? No smoke out the back?

Does to car pick up any power over 2000rpm at all?

Another thing to check would be the waste gate on the back of the turbo to see if it is stuck open.  Unfortunately, that is not as simple as checking the compressor.

The ideal test would be to temporarily plumb in a boost gauge.  I can't remember if the TechStream software's live data feed shows boost pressure.

Also, although it should throw up an error, have the checked the throttle body to see if the flap is opening all the way?  It is probably fine, but it is easy enough to investigate to make sure.

Hi Shahpor, no warning lights , no smoke, no pick up of any kind at all , it reminds me of driving my old Fiat 123 when i was a lad :-)  other than having vastly reduced power its perfect , it wouldnt be in limp mode for some reason would it ?

Turbochargers rarely fail without warning there is usually some noises if the bearings are about to fail accompanied by increased oil consumption.

Not sure which type of turbo is fitted to the 220d but if it is a variable vane type the actuator can seize preventing a quick spool up or check the pipe work and intercooler for leaks or damage and all the pipe clips are tight, usual sucking noises can be an indication here.

There is also a boost pressure sensor which does fail on other makes.

It may be an idea to find a local turbo specialist who would be able to provide an accurate diagnosis and would probably prove cheaper than a Lexus dealer.

    Finally welcome to the LOC.

thanks for that Steve ,there was no warning at all, left home as normal, all was fine untill i went to pull away from a junction and nothing , no power at all,  ive had a good look at all the pipework and all seems well, i also took off the pipe leading into the turbo revealing some fins which i coud turn freely, not sure if this is the actual turbo fan or not :-/

  4. Hi Guys , whilsts I have adapted my driving to deal with the lag in my IS220D`s turbo kicking in , it seems now to have stopped kicking in al together :-/ , I now have a complete lack of power all the way through the revs and gears :-(   the only way the reach 30mph is to high rev ( 3500rpm) in both first and second gear ...... not good !! I`ve cleaned the MAF sensor with electrical contact spray , and also had the EGR valve out to claen out all the carbon deposits , of which there was plenty, all though to no avail , could it be the turbo that has failed , any advice will be greatly appreciated :-)
