  1. Managed to pick up a good second hand mirror the right colour off eBay. Came from Lithuania which was a concern but polished up like new.

Fitting was not too hard, I managed to find a video on how to remove the door card: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5KYJ9JJZX0 just needed to be careful not to drop the nuts from the mirror inside the door.

So all good, just need to decide on a dashcam now 😀

  2. Driving along this morning on a 60 mph road and an oncoming van drifts over and hits my drivers side mirror. Happens in the dark, van does not stop and i get no details 😠

So I have popped the glass back in as it was not broken but the indicator lens in the mirror is broken and the mirror casing scuffed. So I have just ordered a second hand one of eBay (anyone swapped  a mirror before) - any difficulties changing?

I am thinking of getting a dash cam - though not sure if it would help as would not have shown the impact,,,,,,

Yes, absolute rubbish. Ours is on 19-inchers and it's the best, most comfortable ride we've had.

    Possibly confusing 20" wheels?

I liked "Also worth having a look at is the Jeep Grand Cherokee, along with the Range Rover Sport. The latter has a far better cabin than the Lexus, and it’s much nicer to drive, but its reliability record isn’t as good. "  Where its "reliability record  isn't as good" means it is opposite ends of the spectrum... and I even own a Landrover!

My first bout of bowel cancer in 2013 I put my Honda VFR Vtec in my shed, under a soft cover, on stands so the tyres weren't on the floor before I went in for the op thinking/believing what they told me about being fit for work again after a couple of months. It had Dunlop RoadSmart 2's on that had been fitted about 6 months before and had done only 1500 miles. Almost a year later when my core strength was up to it, I went to the shed, uncovered the bike, started going though the usual steps, battery on charge, check the lube, operation of levers, lights etc. When I came to check the tyre pressures the front tyre had cracked in the grooves, right at the base of the grooves, the only bit I hadn't "tyre blacked" before I put it away. The rear was as good as it was when I put it in there, because I had tyre blacked the whole of the tyre (I know you aren't supposed to but I wouldn't have been trying for knee down on my first outing). Now this was under cover, not in any UV light as such, although it did get quite warm in the shed in 2013, I was shocked to see the tyre in so bad a state. Straight down to my bike tyre man for a new pair of shoes on it... Put a dent in my "Bike pounds" account.

I cut back on bike usage during chemo, most of my bikes are kickstart, which I struggled with. my BMW has both electric and kickstart so managed to use it a bit during my treatment. I would guess that the Avon Safety Mileage tyres on my 1954 Matchless are about 20 years old and have no cracks..... though I probably should think of getting a new set... your Dunlops did not last long sitting, perhaps modern grippy tyres are more prone to cracking.

I'm not a chemist, but I thought these products were sold to "beautify" the tyre wall. Not protect it. Putting a pretroleum product on a tyre wall cannot be good for it, but I might be completely wrong.. The "olden days" if you like we would use tyre paint but these products are quick to suit the "must have it now" lifestyle we seem to have grown into.

Anything that makes the tyre slippery (and it does, the son of a friend of mine mistakenly put some on his scooter tyres a while ago, he lost control the next corner, luckily he was barely moving) has to be effecting the tyre chemistry?

Far as I'm aware it's not "elements that crack and fade the tyre". It's good old UV radiation from my understanding. Because they don't crack on the side of the tyre that see's no sun, and presumably these "elements" if they exist are on the inside of the tyre as well? I have to change my wife's tyres not because they are worn out, it's because they crack on the outside when they get old. And have been in the sun as her parking spot faces east/west.

I am old enough to have used Tyrewall black on tyres back in the 80's 🙄

I replaced all 5 tyres on my Landrover Defender last year, they are BF Goodrich mud terrains and had tons of tread left, despite doing 60,000 miles in 10 years due to sidewall cracking.

i see some products are advertised as giving UV protection to reduce cracking (though as you say not petroleum based), think I will look into it as I tend to cover low mileages per year as my travel is spread over 2 cars and 4 motorbikes.

Tyre cracking wouldn't be a warranty failure, it's what tyres do and unless it is through to the inner braiding it's not an MOT issue either, presumably would have been cracked in June when you got the vehicle, would have expected that it would have been visible during inspection?.

So personally I think unless they are really going to push the boat out, you have bought a 2nd hand vehicle with normal wear and tear features for a car of that age. Never seen a warranty that covered wear items the seller had no control over. And the fact you have covered them with tyre "enhancer" probably wouldn't help either. Wonder what the MSDS sheet says for the tyre cleaner? Besides petroleum distillates at up to 30 BV?

Never understood why people think spraying petroleum based products onto essentially rubber tyres is a good thing...

You may well be correct, I wish I had spotted it when i inspected it prior to purchase, the pouring rain did not help! Just annoying to buy a Lexus approved used car and immediately have to look for a new tyre after 200 miles use.

I perhaps mistakenly thought the Tyre foam I used helps prevent cracking: Made by Armorall, they claim "Penetrates to guard against the elements which crack and fade tyre sidewalls" https://www.my-sds.co.uk/Admin/ViewDocument.aspx?SDSNo=17&headingID=1&MasterCompanyID=347&primaryReportId=0

Once the destination is put in try zooming in. Think that the roads will appear as you enlarge the map.

I must admit I have a tom-tom on. to navigate and for speed cameras.

No, it is trying to take me to the nearest road on the mapping software that is about a mile from my destination across a loch, so no good as it's about 10 miles out by road!

  8. Was just washing the RX today and noticed one tyre with sidewall cracking, I have emailed Lexus to see what they say as to whether it is covered under warranty as have only had the car 3 weeks. I had similar cracking on my Landrover when the tyres were about 10 years old and had done 60k miles... so replaced them. Though I run Mud Terrains on the Landy

My wife and I are loving the car, it is so relaxing and comfortable to drive. Pity I only noticed now as it was back to Lexus last week to have the faulty parking sensor replaced.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your RX Advance and colour choice.

loving the Defender and looks like you’ve done a great job rebuilding it.

    Whats hiding under the tarpaulin?

Thanks, I have had the Defender 14 years, it was rebuilt on a galvanised chassis, galvanised bulkhead, I even had the axles galvanised. It gets a bit offroad use.

The car under the tarpaulin was a 1971 Saab 96, I just sold it to help pay for the RX. It was originally a 1500 though I rebuilt the engine as a 1700 with a rally cam and Weber twin choke.

  11. Hi folks,

I have been posting on the RX section for the last few weeks after looking for and subsequently buying a 2014 RX450h which has covered 28k, my first Lexus. I have just noticed this section, so thought I would add an introduction.

I have had Saabs for decades and the RX replaces a low mileage Alfa Romeo 159 1750 Tbi TI.

I have an interest in vehicles, as a former engineer, I have a rebuilt Landrover Defender  and a few old bikes from the 1950's to 1970's. My dad was a mechanic so I have done my own servicing to engine rebuilds.

I was influenced in my decision to buy a Lexus by their reputation for quality and reliability, so hope it was the right decision, i am impressed so far bar by the underbody corrosion protection (I have a separate thread on that).

I'd still use it because it's allegedly able to stop the rust that is already present.

I'll be buying a Waxoyl pack soon anyway, might as well cover myself in gunge. There's only really odd bits, mainly around the exhaust system, suspension mounts, that kind of thing. Up on the ramps, off with the wheels, on with the spray.

And on another slightly worrying point... My MOT guy told me that if a brake pipe has been coated with grease, it's now a fail. I've always done this...

There are better coatings than Waxoyl : I used it years ago then moved to Dinitrol which I found to be better.

I think Noxudol is better again, see https://www.auson.se/sites/default/files/rusttest_noxudol_700_classic_monthly_uk_0.pdf

Noxudol is used by Toyota and Honda for recalls, e.g. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2009/RCRIT-09V444-6633.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0xAcByF8NsuHyoJowNod3c83vFCI_E5wWV-fK-yhJ0HC6XJzKIzq8OFKM

I am sure Herbie is correct regarding greasing brake pipes, my brother had his Grand Vitatara in for an MOT last week and the tester but grease on some of his brake lines....

The very same happened my 2013 RX last November. Every time I put the car in reverse, the rear left sensor activated, even though there was no obstruction behind the car.
I ordered a replacement sensor online (from China - ebay !)

Whilst waiting for the new sensor to arrive, I read a tip online, and it may help someone out with a similar problem

    - smear vaseline gently over the faulty sensor, and rub off any excess.

It cured the problem for me, the new sensor arrived - and I have never had to fit it - as the existing sensor has worked perfectly since, despite power-washing the car (carefully) several times !

I have tried this and it has now worked for a few days!

    Thanks
