Hi Alan, firstly I’m sure I’m not clever at all! However I’m intrigued to know roughly what electricity tariff you are on; is it one of the cheaper overnight ones?

I’ve tried a little exploratory maths on your data by reversing the amounts spent on petrol and electricity and assuming some underlying range rates - let me know what you think and where I may well be wrong. I can see your logic, but I don't know why you would swap the costs?

So, if the £65 was spent on electricity at a tariff of say 25p/kWh that would mean 260kWh which if my experience of getting 2.7 miles/kWh is near accurate would cover a total of 702 miles. By August last year I was achieving 3.2 kw/h - it had steadily improved from March, Range Guesstimate with a/c was mid 50's actual was mid 40's.

Then changing £255.82 to petrol at £1.669 per litre would give 33.7 gallons, which at say 40mpg (maybe normal hybrid) would cover 1,348 miles.

Grand total would then be only 2,050 miles

if I change the electricity tariff from 25p to 7.5p the total mileage would increase to 3,688. So I think that there’s still some refinement needed to our calculations 😉

I'm also talking NX not RX which will be heavier?

    Cheers, Kevin

    Hi Kevin

Back in August 2022 when I wrote the original post I was on 27.35p, I have never been on a cheap electricity tariff, I don't have a smart meter. This can cause a problem with accuracy as I have to estimate the actual electricity taken. Increasing my electricity cost by 10% would reduce mpg to 85.

My figures look high because between 1/3/22 (when I collected the car and filled with petrol) and 17/8/22 when I next refilled, I'd done a lot of short trips meaning that I rarely used fuel, so the majority of my 3809 were completed on electricity. Unfortunately, I don't record the actual miles covered on electricity for each journey and I can't interrogate the car as I've swapped it for a new one.

I have looked back and can see that the last time I filled the car with petrol was 31/12/23 with 15256 miles completed since 1/3/22. (I changed it on 16/3/24and didn't fill up again so I've ignored anything after this date).

Running my logic again for approx. 'whole of life' I'd got to:

    All fuel cost Petrol 603.96 + Elec 1090.61 = £1694.57

Approx. Average Cost per gallon 1.55*4.54609 = £7.05

    1694.57/7.05 = 240.36 gallons

    15256/240.36 = 63.47 mpg

or 59.5 mpg if I increase Elec costs by approx 10%.

Obviously, this will vary per car as we all live different lives, The vast majority of my trips are local, less than 20 miles, so covered on electric - sometimes I do choose to run on petrol so it's not sat around in the tank for ever. If you are running the ICE more often, the mpg will be lower?

@Ken R is this how you calculate your figures?

That really helpful. Many thanks Alan and makes perfect sense to me. I’m finding it harder to track how much charge the car has taken as I’m having to charge from a 3-pin socket still (curse of a looped supply and lack of response / urgency from SSEN) but guess I can estimate that closely enough with the miles per kw/h and total EV distance and calculating that from my total EV site de driven?

I’ve been disappointed with the app and lack of details it provides. Similarly the bar graphs in the infotainment aren’t particularly informative; so checking the maths with you all is helpful.

I am using a 'dumb' charger (pre-smart ones that tell you more info), so I calculate my charges by using the lexus Link app to tell me the amount of charge remaining in the Battery - remembering that 30% is ringfenced and not generally used for driving. I then calculate how many Kw/h it will take to fill and multiply that by the cost of electricity.

I'm not on any fancy tariff so if there is 47% charge left in the Battery the formula I use is 18.1*0.53*0.2736 this gives a £ value of £2.62.

I disregard the fact that there will be some 'leakage' which means I'm underestimating slightly, but it is near enough for me.

    And yes I have a spreadheet 😁

    Hi Xez

Haha. No need for marking, that’s spot on and is exactly how I calculated it as well for ICE only. I was trying to work out what the combined traditional hybrid figure is when the ev only range is exhausted (i.e. under 30% battery)

    So I got:

33.3 pure ICE as you say

39 estimate for combined ICE / battery when operating like a normal hybrid in HV mode - what I’d get if I didn’t plug in.

51.8 overall for this trip including the additional PHEV EV range.

Happy to see any suggested variations as just finding my way with this.

Also trying to understand if, aside from the environmental considerations, it is commercially viable to top up at the local charger at 55p per kWh (85p 1st KWh) but suspect that may be outside the spirit of Ken’s thread/post.

    Hi Pally

I'm here snooping from the NX Forum - I've got to keep my eye on Ken R !! 😂

Anyway, I've copied and pasted a post from an NX 450h+ Range forum back in 2022 about how I calculate mpg - I do it over a longer time than a single trip though. Hopefully this might help?:

"I filled up on day one (1st March) with odometer showing 29 miles. I've filled up today with odometer showing 3838, not put any fuel in between. Today put in 39 litres (8.58 gallons) to fill again. That works out at 444 miles per gallon.

I am not naive enough to think that this is a true representation, so I thought if I add the cost of the fuel (£65) to the cost of all my electric charges (£255.82), divide that by todays fuel price per litre (£1.669) after converting to gallons, this will provide an equivalent number of gallons to the total cost, then divide miles covered (3809) by the equivalent gallons:

    All fuel cost 65 + 255.82 = £320.82

    Cost per gallon 166.9*4.54609 = £7.587

    320.82/7.587 = 42.29 gallons

    3809/42.29 = 90.06 mpg

Sits back and waits for those cleverer than me to blow my theory/calculation/premise out of the water.

    What have I missed?"

    Mine too 53.3/52.2

Just looked back to my first 450h+ shown above (should read 9/5/2023) which at this time last year will have been 14 months old with approx 10k on clock.

In May 2022 there was another thread we were noting range on - I'll see if I can find any posts from then as my new car has some 'learning' to do !!

    UPDATE:
I've found the other thread, titled: NX 450h+ electric and petrol range, but it seems like I was more interested in working out the mpg than a day to day electric range then!!

Have taken up the offer of Lexus minor repair insurance just in case it picks up some scars in car parks etc and considering alloy wheel insurance as well because the rims look particularly vulnerable.

    Hi Ken R,

Just visiting from the NX forum! 😁

I had the tyre & alloy wheel insurance on the last NX (and now on my new one). I made a claim on the first car as I had a tyre replaced due to a puncture. They paid out without fuss the max of £250 per claim - just one word of warning, if claiming for a new tyre, make sure you download the claim form and follow the instructions BEFORE you get the tyre fitted. I didn't and had to revisit the dealer to get photos and sign off by the service team.

I can't get the minor repair insurance as the small print says if you use the car for business you aren't covered - I have business use on my insurance as I travel to meetings with clients.

You more 'mature' folk are alright. 😄

  6. I talked about this on the NX forum last year:

Mine makes a noise like someone dis-embowelling a dalek, I can sometimes hear it in the car, but it does cut off at 15mph. It's only when going forwards. I think if it beeped like a reversing truck (Kia's do this?) would make me want to change my car.

Apparently it's a UN directive (UN R138.01) picked up by many countries, to help vulnerable road users to be more aware of almost silent BEVs & PHEVs.

You would think that as we've spent £50, 60, 70k on a car we should be able to choose the noise it makes - I'd pick the sound of an ice cream van and turn the volume up, to upset the expectant children when they see it's me and not the ice cream man coming down the street!! 😂

  7. Car collected yesterday afternoon.

A far better experience all round this time (salesman, car & paperwork all ready). They have a 'handover specialist' now who helped me set everything up on the multimedia stuff. So far, no issues with profile not been recognised or anything. 😁

I guess last time (March 2022) we were all learning together as the car was still a new model and the salesman didn't have much of a clue.

Forgive me for commenting Alan, no offence intended, but it never ceases to amaze me how anyone can prudently afford to buy a new car given the immediate depreciation the moment it's driven off the forecourt 🤔 .  Unless of course there's some kind of tax dodge or corporate involvement, then I might understand.

As for selling to WBAC, it's not difficult to beat their prices which must allow for a significant profit margin at auction, namely that of their owners, BCA 😋 .

Yes, I know who they are owned by.

If we were all wired the same and did the same, wouldn't it be a boring existence?

There is no right or wrong, we generate income and have the freedom to spend how we want. I suppose because I had jobs with company cars for a long time - often changing at shorter intervals than 2 or 3 years, I have that mindset. As I said before, I am now looking at retirement and whilst I still can, I am changing. It may be that I end up keeping this one for many years, but I doubt it.

  9. No Len,  I am getting a different colour although the comment about colour change was a joke about ensuring the neighbours know I've got a new car.

You are never going to win buying and selling cars (sometimes even if you are a dealer)!

I'm getting a new 24 reg one. I am fortunate in being able to do it, I bought it in February when there was an offer on, got both a discount and a good price for the p/x (£6k better than WBAC), although I didn't shop around.

Also, they have transferred my pre-paid service contract so I've got 2 years with only RFL & insurance to pay (touch wood). 🫰

This may be my last 'family-size' car, so I'm just kicking that decision a bit further into the long grass.

In typing this, Len, you've made me think - maybe I should cancel 😂

  10. Like Ken R, I too am changing my 2 year old NX450h+ Premium Plus, but I'm staying with the NX, same model just a different colour - so the neighbours know I've got a new car 😁

I only went in because I got a puncture!!! 😁

Swapping Sonic Grey with Red interior for a Sonic Titanium with black interior

I did look at the RX but it is too big for our needs.

I pick my car up tomorrow, it's been in the UK since 6th March and I could have had it at the beginning of this week, but had other things to attend to.

I have the same problem with my 2023 450h+. I won't repeat what everyone is saying other than to add that I travelled home from North Wales last Saturday, running entirely on petrol, did  about 50 miles on Sunday and similar on Monday, then this morning - battery flat. So it is not primarily when a car has not been much used that the 12v battery dies. This has happened to me twice in the 9 months I have had the car. It completely disables the car which can be a disaster. The boot cannot be opened manually so it can be very difficult to access the battery - you have yo go in through the back seat, if you can open that door. It seems to me like a 'Don't buy this car' issue.

Why do you need to access the Battery when you can still open the bonnet and access the jump start points in there?

I have had my F Sport for only 2 weeks and agree that it is not a Sporty car.  It is firmer and with less roll than the standard Premium Plus that I tested.  It feels well connected to the road and the steering is solid.  I think that the seats are great and they fit me and mine very well - again on the firm side but supportive without any pressure points.  I covered about 150 miles today on all road types, including single track with horrific potholes and, frankly, I am genuinely impressed.  Would the Premium Plus on 18" wheels have performed as well, or better, I don't know!

Premium Plus has 20" wheels, I haven't checked but think it might be the entry level Premium that has 18" wheels.
