I friend came around yesterday to show me his new BMW X3. It's a car I considered before purchasing my NX450+ so was interested to see how it compared.
He's got the XDrive 30E which compares reasonably well performance and pricewise to my NX450+.
What hit me instantly was the feeling that it was much better in terms of build quality. Everything felt really solid compared to certain areas of the NX450+ and it felt noticeably more refined on the road. The infotainment system, which I've known from previous BMWs, remains as good as ever.
But, build quality doesn't always point to improved reliability which is the main reason I went for the NX450+. I'm hoping that it provides potentially 7+ years of reliable motoring and that the cost of ownership compared to the BMW would be cheaper over that period. The only fly in that ointment is that the BMW servicing plan means that he may go up to 18 months without a service whereas Lexus drag me into the garage every 12 months no matter what. The Lexus warranty is also a positive but I've always been of the opinion that the Lexus service model effectively makes you pay for the warranty. Resale values are an unknown so would a 7 year old NX450+ retain more of it's purchase price than a XDrive 30E?
What other cars did you guys consider when going for the NX450+?

I've so far experienced approx 35 miles in cold weather and 53 in warm weather. I'd say on average I'm in the low 40s.

Ah, the good old days of my BMWs where I'd see a message asking me if I wanted to update the maps over the air and it all worked perfectly.
-
Based on my recent renewal experience I can safely say that despite being 57 with no claims, driving for 39 years, living in a safe area and doing only 8k miles a year I can't work out who wants to insure who. All the recommended insurers, SAGA and NFU being a couple of examples, wanted what I can only describe as ridiculous amounts to insure. When asked why the quotes were so high I was told that I don't fit their preferred customer model. Just who is their preferred customer?
As for Lexus insurance - even worse that the two above.

Sorry you lost me. There are only 2 lights. Red and green. Once car starts they flash i.e. checking system and then green light remains on telling you all is correct. The only other message displayed relates to passenger air bag being activated. You can disable the passenger airbag e.g. if transporting a baby, but not the drivers which you cannot turn on/off.
The e-call system does not activate on passenger/driver sides but activates if air bags activated automatically.
Ah, I see - the light configuration suggests that there's a light for each seat but there are in fact separate lights for green and red. A single light that changes from red to green would have made more sense but hey ho.
Thanks for the clarification.
-
As I posted I've already checked the manual which suggests that the eCall system is off on the driver's side but where is this configured? I assume normal functionality results in both lights showing as green and that there's no configurable items available for the driver.

I assume you went back to BMW Carlisle after obtaining that info?

I can read Radiohead\OK Computer\Paranoid Android as easily and safely as locations on the satnav or consumption\efficiency info so it's hardly a safety issue.
What I don't want to see is Radiohead\OK Computer\Para.
-
On numerous DAB radio stations I'm unable to read\access the full artist\track info as there's no scroll\auto-scroll facility. There's a bar present which gives the impression that you should be able to scroll right to get to the missing information but this doesn't work.
Some DAB stations display the data in a more readable format where separate lines are used but the majority stick all info on a single unreadable line.
Any ideas?

I've noticed on occasion that if the CVT system has been whining away, when ascending a steep hill for example, that a burning smell can be present when exiting the car.
Is this normal?

If anyone steals my car I don't want it back. They can ship it off to wherever.

Hooray! - It's insurance renewal time.
Last year - £407. This year - £693.
I thought I'd try NFU as I've heard good things about it - £1600!
Are NXs being stolen left, right and centre? Have repair costs increased dramatically?

Every one of my numerous cars have had two fog and reversing lights.
I didn't even know that the NX only had one of each. Not sure it bothers me TBH.

Hi, the indicated tyre pressure setting for mu NX450h is set to 2.3 for both front and rear tyres. Is this a factory setting or can it be adjusted?
-
it's not a safety system as I never changed lane or got close to doing so. It was a bizarre combination of the car travelling quickly over a camber in the road then being hit by the rush of air from a truck.
-
Whilst driving down a dual carriageway a few weeks back the combination of road camber and a passing articulated truck resulted in my NX450+ experiencing something similar to that of a sudden strong wind hit to the side. This movement made me feel slightly queasy for a short period.
Since this I've felt that the car feels slightly 'bouncy' and doesn't appear to be as planted as it once was. I've checked tyre pressures just in case one of the UK's many thousands of potholes that had an affect but all looks OK from that front.
The car is in for its first service in a few weeks so will mention this to Lexus but could the incident a few weeks back have affected my suspension in some way?

My insurance is up next month. If it goes beyond £700 I'll look at getting rid of the car as I can't see the insurance situation changing anytime soon. Any savings I intended to make with regards to ongoing costs will slowly evaporate. My wife has just exchanged her PHEV for something far less green and more sporty and is now enjoying far cheaper insurance. The whole car market is complete madness with any incentive to go 'green' being kicked into the long grass.

My phone doesn't fit in the charging area when a USB cable fitted so it's bit messy. I'll look at the options.

Tried AAWireless - too unreliable so sent it back.

I prefer the native Lexus interface to Android Auto TBH but AA does allow me to use Tidal and Samsung Music. If only I didn't need the blasted cable!
-
Until the weekend I'd always used a USB stick for my music store in my NX450h and all worked fine but having just bought a new Samsung mobile with oodles of storage I decided to use the phone as the music store. One of the main reasons for doing this was to free up the USB data connector for Android Auto if ever needed.
One difference that became instantly apparent is that the interface presented is slightly different than that when using music sourced from USB. The interface using the USB displayed an A-Z quick list option on the far right of the screen which, although too small and a bit of a pain to touch on, gave me the option of quickly moving to artists\albums\tracks beginning with a certain letter. This option isn't present when music is sourced from the Samsung phone so if I want to choose music from say, ZZ Top, I have to scroll through every artist entry from A to Z. This takes an age.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is it linked to the phone model or is it the same for all phones? Is there a workaround?

At least they managed to quote on your Lexus! It seems from these forums they will not even quote anymore on RX450h.
There should be a law that prevents a manufacturer from selling models that their own insurance won't cover. There are Range Rover owners who are selling their nearly new vehicles with huge losses in value because they can't get affordable insurance. Here's hoping that certain Lexus models don't go the same way.

This explains why my NX450+ went bananas whilst waiting for a car park to empty last summer. We were sat in the car with the doors open and the radio on for quite some time but when we were ready to go the car wouldn't start. After displaying warning messages the car did finally start and I was able to drive off. Looks like I was lucky.
