  1. Wikipedia:

"The mica group of sheet silicate minerals includes several closely related materials having highly perfect basal cleavage. All are monoclinic with a tendency towards pseudo-hexagonal crystals and are similar in chemical composition. The highly perfect cleavage, which is the most prominent characteristic of mica, is explained by the hexagonal sheet-like arrangement of its atoms.

The word "mica" is thought to be derived from the Latin word micare, meaning to shine, in reference to the brilliant appearance of this mineral (especially when in small scales)."

Parthiban - you are correct - they only do metallic. But when I bought mine, I had to pay extra for metallic. It is strange - in the UK - Windsor Blue, Velvet Black and Arctic Pearl are new paints replacing others, so maybe they are metallic, but Lexus still charge you extra. So what if I didn't want a metallic painted car? Can I have one with Primer only :o

I'm sorry.. I never got past "perfect basal cleavage".

  2. Hi Guys I hate this forum I've just got it into my head what i want 220D SE-L now after reading lots of comments like fuel economy etc i wonder if I might as well go for the 250 SE-L Auto

I'm used to 26 MPG in my Audi TT so do you think I would get about the same with the 250 or what?

Things that are putting me off the 220D are comments about the stiff clutch , bad MPG, and problems with some gear changing, not to mention rattles and squeaks.

Can anyone help I'm getting close to making up my mind should i go for the Lexus at all or my 2nd choice at the moment the new Freelander2 2.2 SE

    HELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP

    Cheers Leddy

P.s Thanks in advance for any reply I'm about to spend alot of Money so any advice is most welcome :D :D

    Cheers all Leddy

Lexus Newcastle is just round the corner from me - I've seen that one sitting on the forecourt - it's a very nice car. It's a good dealership actually, everyone is very friendly.

  3. I came from a TT as well. For my money it has to be the 250 Auto - it's the most relaxing car I've ever driven. The engine is so smooth and with the auto box it just effortlessly wafts up to illegal speeds without any fuss. I have an hour+ commute to/from work every day through heavy traffic and I arrive as fresh as a daisy. It's been in an Audi bodyshop getting a bumper scrape sorted and all the technicians have been coming up to me commenting on how nice the car is (I think they've all been for a drive round the block in it).

  4. (4) Centre armrest padding becoming pretty flat.

    Brian [:)]

Mine has that. But I think I just have a fat elbow!

If it's any consolation I have been driving a fully specced Audi Q7 3.0Tdi S-Line Tiptronic with every option as a courtesy car these last 2 days while my Lexus was having a bumper scrape repaired - beautiful car, list price £50,000 - and as I was driving up the road tonight a rattle started from the dash. It's not just Lexus with these problems.

  5. The stupid thing is I love the car but don't love the extra £150 per month I spend on fuel!!

    If it's any consolation I'm currently driving a 3.0 Tdi Audi Q7 and it's averaging 22mpg!

    WOW

    Lucky :tsktsk:

LOl - Jamboo mate, it's absolutely massive! I'm sure I wasn't watching for a second and ran right over a FIAT Cinquecento like it was just a hedgehog. We've just spent lunchtime at work trying to figure out how to get into the third row of seats and trying to fit the two tallest members of staff back there. This afternoon we are off to do a drive by shooting courtesy of the rear privacy glass. Have to say though it's not as good a drive as my IS. Don't think I'll be swopping.

  6. The stupid thing is I love the car but don't love the extra £150 per month I spend on fuel!!

According to my back of a fag packet calculation you'd need to be doing 4000 miles a month (based on an achieved mpg of 32mpg compared to an expected of say 45mpg) before it cost you that much extra per month!

I remember when I had a 1.9Tdi Passat it consistently averaged 47mpg so I would expect a heavier, more powerful Lexus diesel to average about 42mpg - about the same as a 2.0Tdi Audi.

    If it's any consolation I'm currently driving a 3.0 Tdi Audi Q7 and it's averaging 22mpg!

  7. Well.. I was faced with this conundrum when I bought my 250 SE - whether or not to pay the £2700 extra for the MM. In the end I just couldn't justify the extra money. The Satnav was nice, the ML sound system was a bit better than the standard set up and the reversing camera was a nice gimmick even if you didn't trust it 100%. If it had been say £1000 - £1500 I would have snapped their hand off but £2700 was too rich for my blood and I haven't regretted it. I don't know if 3 years down the line the lack of the satnav will make the car less desirable but the way I figure it is that it won't be £2700 less desirable and the satnav will probably be out of date anyway.

  8. I had the centre dash speaker rattle cured at my dealer and that was great until I noticed a faint rattle from the passenger side of the dash. I pushed a small piece of foam between the A pillar plastic and the dash and tucked it out of sight and that rattle has gone as well.

BTW, it may be worthwhile everyone checking their alloys as I had one start to bubble and corrode after 5 months and had it replaced. However, I was washing the car at the weekend and noticed that I have two other wheels starting to corrode as well. Time for new wheels under warranty I think.

Northern Boy - did you get your speaker rattle sorted by Lexus Newcastle? - they tell me that they only have knowledge of rattles in the GS model and have no reported faults in the IS

Did they? That's strange because when I took mine in for its 20k service I just told them that it was rattling from the speaker grill in the centre of the dash ( I knew this because when I pushed a credit card down the side and lifted it slightly, the rattling stopped) and when I got it back they had fixed it and re-seated the cover). I find the best policy in situations like this is to just tell them what you want doing and expect them to do it.

  10. 87RON......more or less crude oil! lol

Made me laugh, I was checking out the Shell V-Power website and didnt realise it was the American site, their V-Power is still lower RON than our normal Unleaded! Off topic I know! :D

As for the Americans being brand loyal....think by the end of this year Toyota are set to overtake GM to become the worlds biggest manufacture....and America has contributed to this more than any other market.

They calculate octane ratings differently in the US so their 87 RON is like our 91 RON, 90 RON is like our 95 RON regular unleaded and their 94 RON is like our Super unleaded (99-100 RON).

  11. Having said this, on a 25 mile run starting in traffic I reckon 32-37 is about what you'll get...sounds about right (and very poor). The car is much much better on a motorway (or at least should be IF you stick to the speed limit).

That figure is pretty much what we get with the A4 2.0Tdi. TBH the fuel consumption with the Audis has been a bit disappointing after my 1.9Tdi Passat.

  12. In my opinion the catholic church views on contraception are really outdated, see the problem in Africa where AIDS is rampant and only recently the church said it was ok for the spouse of a person with the disease to use protection.... everyone else should abstain.... crazy

I think protection from diseases should be more important than all the talk about contraception ....

In most cases (not all) if they abstain from s*x untill marage then they wouldn't have AIDS and if everyone had abstained now and in the past there would be practicaly no cases of AIDS aswell as all the other deseases so if people followed ALL the rules that were set out and not just the one then the rules wouldn't be outdated would they? (im asking for your opinions on this)

    ps Im not a catholic.

If we followed all the rules? Hmm.....anyone going to the stoning this weekend? I've got three pebbles and a bag of gravel.

  13. Thanks NBLG.. Great info on that site - it's frightening to see how invasive the dash rattle fix is...

BTW How is it back home? I used to live in Gosforth and sometimes shopped at that safeways near the Lexus garage on Benton Road...

It's Sainsbury's now - we've gone posh. I'm sure things elsewhere haven't changed much - though you'll be amazed to hear that Newcastle United have still won nowt.... :duh:

  14. is that legal if i change the bonnet to carbon fibre and the colour is different to the car??

and any one know where i can get the breaking parts?

    any helps would be greatful...

    thanks

    chris

It's not illegal unless you completely changed the colour of the car and didn't change the V5. Don't know why you'd want to make your Lexus look like a taxi though.

  15. NOT GOOD NEWS FOR ME - this is cribbed from the "Why does my car rattle" post

I've just taken the car on a motorway run.

The seat squeak is back. It's now worse then ever.

There is a faint dash rattle that gets worse over poor motorway surfaces but is fine in town. This rattle comes from deep in the dash.

Oh and that Speaker grill fits really badly. It still protudes from the back and there is what looks like a gouge in the dash on the left handside, and by looking through the screen (from outside) at the edge of the speaker.

I love the car, but the quality of this product is a sham. I'm sick of people:

    1) telling me it's an "early car" and you should expect teethers. well I don't think so...not repeat ones...

    2) telling me Lexus are the most reliable cars. Maybe they don't break down, but they are not solidly made. To qualify this just press the bumpers from the sides. They are very thin. Like a cheap showertray. Look at the grill - press it. Whilst it's nice and shiny, it is not premium quality. It ,ight be fantastic looking, but it's cramped and has a small boot...

Maybe the journo's were partly correct!

Until now I was wowed by the car, it's gizmo's and the fact that I'd spent a huge amount of my hard earned dosh - made me want to say good things. It made me feel I'd bought something great. Well, it's actually an average Japanese car, made to look good, loaded to the gunnels with kit, but without any engineering pedigree. Thats what todays return of the rattles, the seat etc has done.

Maybe it's just me - too fussy. Maybe for some on the forum I rattle more than the car itself. maybe I should accept a rattling car as being normal, and that's somehow my fault for buying an early model...

This will be the 4th visit for warranty work in 8 months and 6500 miles. That's more than the various German cars I've had before all put together in over 10 years.

Now tell me that a Lexus is better made than a German car...with many of them you get what you pay for. I certainly expected more from Lexus. Not the contsnat rattles, repeat repairs etc. It's just not on.

As soon as I can afford to, I'm defecting back again. Period. Maybe a Golf GTI, R32 or an A6...

Oh - and before anyone tries to flame me, this is my last post. The car takes up too much of my life (and yes I do have one)

I feel for you Jamboo, these sort of niggles are incredibly annoying. Sometimes I think it's better to have a definite mechanical fault which can be identified and put right first time than these intermittent rattles.

Concerning the seat - there is a particular problem with the seat locating lugs that are used during assembly causing a squeak and there is a TSB to cure this involving removing these lugs are they are not needed. I wonder if your dealership just lubricated the area and that is why the noise has returned.

I pulled my speaker grill out when I had a rattle there and it is pretty flexible so that should be seated back flush with some foam - should be no more than a 5 minute job.

Seeing as the old ball and chain works for an Audi dealership we get a new A4 every 3 months and even on some of them there is the odd rattle that, if it were my own car, I'd not be happy about. I agree though the Audi dash area is a bit better plastic qualitywise - however it is a noisier car so some rattles could be masked by this. It seems that Lexus have better reliabilty but not so good interior quality whereas Audi have better interior quality but not so good reliabilty. I'd like a Lexus with an Audi interior - now there's a project for the weekend!

If I were you I'd go back and instead of playing the angry card try and stress your intense disappointment - sometimes that motivates them more than confrontation.

  16. Hello All,

I've been following the forums ever since my purchase of an IS220d back in July - in particular the stories of rattles from the dash area (and other places!) of the car.

Until now I thought I was one of the lucky ones, but over the past few weeks my car has developed the rattle that comes from the dash against the window, when driving over uneven surfaces. I guess it's due to the cold weather.

As I said I have been following the forums and at no point (correct me if I'm wrong) has anyone actually come up with specifics as to the root cause of the rattles, and exactly how they're fixed. Something like 'the mounting bracket behind the seatbelt's upper fastening needs padding' etc...

I have had a quick look and have a theory about the dash rattle (in my case anyway). There is a little play on the upper part of the dash at the contact point between it and the windscreen. Lexus have thoughtfully adhered black foam rubber strip along the upper edge of the dash to make a seal between the two components. There appears to be no adhiesive on the windscreen side.

I have been able to flex the dash against the windscreen and replicate the 'rattle' - it seems to be caused when the foam rubber breaks friction with the windscreen side - making an audible 'crack'. Try pulling your finger along a piece of paper while pushing down and you get the same effect. (best analogy I could think of...!)

I wonder if anyone else has been able to diagnose the same specific issue. I know someone has had a new windscreen fitted and that seemed to fix their 'rattle'. Perhaps the new windscreen had dust on the area mating with the strip and that's 'lubricating' the contact point, preventing friction between the foam and glass. Other theories - perhaps the cold weather changes the rubber characteristics (goes harder), making it more likely to bind up with the glass. In warm weather the rubber may become softer than orginal spec and have the same effect.

How to fix it - maybe a small amount of lubricant between the glass and rubber. Maybe a black cloth tape squeezed between the glass and rubber. It has to be easier than the 'dash out' job some people have had, which hasn't fixed everyone's issues.

I also have a rattle eminating from the fuel filler cap/boot open switch area when the engine slightly labours at around 2k rpm. If you touch the area around the switch the rattle stops. I have had the switch panel off and there are loose plastics galore - you know, clips that dont mate really well. I'd appreciate anybody else's experience with rattles eminating from that area.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

There are a number of Toyota Service Bulletins dealing with the rattles in the dash. Here's one, for example:

  17. Harry - agreed!! Your case sounds so much like Scott's.

Has anyone told you whats happened or what they've found?

    Not good!

Martin has informed me nothing mechanically wrong with the car.

Lexus will not give the go ahead for all of the jets to be replaced! (Help - Scott!!)

Basically Martin is awaiting Lexus for a fix - Meanwhile nothing!!

Going in to see Richard in a couple of hours!

    Pretty ****** off!

I had a long a friendly chat with my local Lexus senior tech and he admitted that unless you were extremely light footed you were unlikely to see better than high 30s mpg in the diesel.

  18. Dear Ivan

We have met and at that point I am sure I made it clear, as I do to all my customers, that should you have an issue with any aspect of the service we provide, to ask for me personally. I never refuse a call from a customer!

I will take this opportunity to answer some of your concerns.

I have a record of one phone call from you yesterday at 3pm, the message was passed to my Parts Manager, I assume you asked for him. He apologies for the time it has taken to get back to you but he is 2 member of staff short and ran out of time yesterday.

After looking at your history, there would appear not to be a duplicate of any complaint, perhaps you can let me know what the current issue is.

Regarding the remote locking; the issue with transponders being swamped is well document on this site and I notice your participation in these threads; If you would like to discuss this any further, please call me.

    Mr Tango

I can assure you that 'The Mole' is, and never has been a member of my staff. Any postings I make are up front with my occupation made clear. I do understand why the mole kept his identity hidden as some of the logic employed by some members when they post is hard to understand. This is also the reason I haven't posted recently; I do however take a keen interest in the site.

I am reaching for the fire extinguisher as I hit the 'add reply' button.

Big Brother is watching us.... Seriously, it's good to know that Dealer Principles do take an interest in this site and others like it - we're all interested in seeing the brand do well. Mind you I'm confused by the statement "'The Mole' is, and never has been a member of my staff" - well is he or isn't he?

  19. sorry but it is a bog std lexus, not an exotic or modified car, people dont get that jealous im sure.

 :o not in my neighbourhood :excl:

It's the only car that you can park up, and people give you comments. Happened 5 times thus far incl one policeman in MK, and a compliment from an Alpha 159 driver (again in MK too). I obviously returned the compliments to the 159 driver, but not the plodman!!

    I've never had this before!

I know what you mean. I left my missus in the car when I went into the supermarket (don't worry I left he window an inch or so down for fresh air), and she heard a couple of guys standing behind our IS enthusing about it to each other - generally raving about the styling and the potential power of the engine. She thought it quite funny.

  20. A couple of weeks ago i did a run fron Newcastle down to the MPH show in the NEC and managed a round trip on one tank averaged 37.7 from door to door in one day, dammed good for an auto, although the local stuff varies from 23.6 upto 28 depending on how heavy footed i get (lower normally)

PS. Northen boy. where to you hail from, im a Wallsend lad.

Bonjour me old marra! I'm from Heaton. I had a run down to Birmingham and found that at 70mph the engine was ticking over at 2000rpm and returning 37-38 mpg too. Bloody delighted with that.
