  1. Had things under the "approved used warranty". 2 front tyres on GS300 Sport around 13 years ago which was caused by something going wrong on front suspension I believe and wore tyres to cord in around 500 miles.

Headlight washer relay/motor on the GS430 about 7 years ago & had some front steering/suspension bits (£800+) on GS430 after around 3 months following purchase but can't remember now which was replaced under warranty and which was done under Sale of Goods Act.

As with everything, read the small print very carefully.

  2. Most likely not changed - iirc plugs schedule is for change at 90k+ so the car may be on its originals. In the States many owners swap them after 30 to 60k miles. If changing then imo v. important to fit NGK Iridium plugs (OEM).

The interval for plugs on GS430 (same engine) recommended 5yrs/60k. Lexus Coventry changed the plugs on mine when I bought it in 2008 but I haven't changed them since as although 7 years it has only done 27k since and runs perfectly.

I guess that's down to different cars having different service needs/schedules.....

The service needs/schedules with regard to plugs will be the same for the SC 430, GS 430 and LS 430 since they share the same engine Michael.

  3. My late 2002 GS430 SENav has the 18" sport wheels fitted from new with 245/40/18 tyres but SE suspension and it has never really felt "all over the place" when cornering. It handles extremely well. Running Avon ZZ5 front, but about to replace as they are getting low on tread, and Capitol Eco 7 on rear.....which are excellent. Handling may be down to tyres or pressures.

  4. Dave,

Although the handbook is stamped throughout by Lexus, there were no invoices. When I asked Cheltenham for them, they provided only very few reports, rather than invoices. It's all to do with privacy, I guess.

They can get the full history if they can be bothered. Try Coventry or Lincoln as they are the same franchise.

  6. Good idea, Michael.

I bought the red SC430 from Lexus, Cheltenham, who had just given the car an 80,000-mile service because it was 8 years old. It has also had a service every year, despite the low mileage.

Do you think that the plugs would have been changed recently or not, in one of these services? There is no way that I can find this out from Lexus, Cheltenham.

If the car has full service history c/w invoices it should be there. If invoices are not there then Lexus Cheltenham should be able to find out.

  7. I don't see the relevance of how much it cost you to insure a Corvette in the US. Just about everything is a different price in different countries.

More performance = more dangerous in the insurance world. The only reason insurance is more expensive here is because the companies are extorting customers. As customers don't have a choice in whether to take insurance or not, an increase in prices across all companies leaves the consumer with nowhere to go.

Either that or us brits are just ***** drivers

Very simplistic to state that. A lot more than performance is taken into consideration. Example Wife has Hyundai i30 with me named. I have GS430 with wife named. Both policies are the same for mileage, fully comp, NCD etc. Hyundai last year £148, GS430 £152 so on your criteria the GS is virtually the same as a 1.4 i30 !!!!!!!!!! The reason insurance costs more here (if it truly does) is not,as you state, that customers are being extorted. Too many fraudulent claims are certainly a major cause as is rising costs for repairs.

Just got the renewal for wife's car at £163 which I phoned about but they say it is almost their base price.

  8. "I know someone who has a uk provisional license and has 3 year no claim bonus and had even a tracker fitted the first time he got insurance. He took test once and failed badly. Joke and a half. ha.

Honestly I do not see much difference between insurance and extortion. That's another topic."

The person you mention is wasting money buying "insurance" as he is not covered unless he has declared provisional licence and is accompanied by a qualified driver at all times.

  9. The 14 day cooling off period is not normally chargeable provided no claim has been made during that period. There is so much that is misunderstood regarding insurance.

Regarding the offense it would be prudent to notify the insurance that you would like to see evidence that an offense has actually happened. Are you certain that you didn't take out the policy and then realised that an offense had not been declared?

  10. You should measure the resistance of the heater circuit directly on the sensor connector as a test, they are probably open circuit.

Excellent advice Colin, I tested the resistance at the plug. I used the two black wires. Both o2 sensors indicated open circuit.

Given that the sensors are quite easy to access, I'm going to replace them myself.

What I'm looking for now is a reccomendation as to where to source. Obviously Lexus will be quite expensive.

My local garage sourced an o2 sensor for my GS430, Denso, not expensive. He had no problem at all, just looked in his system online and got it. Can't remember exact cost but I think it was around £50. I can check if it would help.

  11. 38 psi is recommended if up to 4 passengers at speeds in excess of 130 mph!!!!!

For speeds up to 100 mph with up to 4 passengers the recommended pressures are 33 psi front and rear.

If you want to go to extremes then why not inflate to 41 psi front and 49 psi rear in accordance with handbook recommendation for loaded to vehicle capacity at speeds in excess of 130 mph?

For "normal" driving in UK with up to 4 passengers I see no reason to exceed the 33 psi recommended but that is purely my opinion based on the research which Lexus have previously done.

  12. I didn't think of slightly over inflating the tyres, I think mine are at about 33psi. Does it make much difference?

I didn't think of slightly over inflating the tyres, I think mine are at about 33psi. Does it make much difference?

Depends on what wheels you are on. Never a good idea to run over/under inflated on a regular basis but if you are on 18" wheels then 35/36 psi is not over inflated. Manufacturers of both cars & tyres give recommended pressures for a reason. It is not just about fuel consumption but also handling, braking and tyre wear. Get extra mpg but lose stability and replace tyres faster? My advise is to use recommended settings.
