  2. The cats have a pre and post cat lambda, the pre cat lambda tells the engine ECU how the engine is performing, the post cat lambda checks that the cat is working correctly, most faults to do with the cats are down to faulty lambda probes, sounds like one of yours is failing which is not unusual at that sort of mileage. A study of live values with a diagnostic tool should help to diagnose this. I would have thought the garage who did the clean would have checked the before and after emissions..??? did they reveal anything...??

If it does turn out to be the cats, then look for a local place that makes stainless steel exhausts, they can fit a generic lambda for much less that will work and be as good as the original...

VSC is unlikely to have been affected by anything in your post so maybe just coincidence, again, diagnostics should reveal the issue...

    My view too.

Life is a one way journey. There are no return options, so

    (a) if you can afford it

    (b) you want it,

    (c) you do not upset anyone by getting it, then,

go for it....and do let us all know how you get on.

    Regards

    John

    Regards

    John

a, that's the issue, I'm right at the bottom end and don't want to put any more money to it....

    b, I do

    c, Can't think of anyone...

    I'll certainly post about it....

While I agree that the 400 was/is wonderfully engineered, it is now an old design. It is now 20 years since I got my first LS and, at the time, I thought it was way ahead of other contemporary cars. However, time marches on, and I wanted something more modern - and with lots of up-do-date goodies.

Since the advent of the 400, cars have become very clever. Even a basic Ford Escort is packed full of electronics (although how long they'll last is open to conjecture). I wanted a modern LS so, in 2012, I bought the 460.

There are a lot of people on here who swear blind by their 400s and will never change. I respect that.........but, please, you have to respect that some of us want to move on.

Modern cars (even the LS) with all their complexity, may go wrong. I bought my 460 knowing this - and accept it could be costlier than my 400.

    Happy New Year :)

Totally agree, I like all the bells and whistles more than a perceived drop in longevity....

Since you requested us to talk you out, can you please advise regarding your budget and mileage? Remember that the LS460 mpg can be surprisingly low as the engine is quite thirsty.

It will be the cheapest one I can find, I run a Range Rover L322 at present that does well if it gets into double figures MPG...

The is absolutely no reason why anyone should talk you out of a LS460, it is obviously a upgrade car for you and a nice one at that, lots of talk from other on your post about the  LS400, i had a 400s (over 10years ownership) and loved them but upgraded to a LS600hl which apart from the hybrid side is basically a 460 although mines the long wheel base with every bell and whistle supplied by lexus ie relaxation package but as i said just a 460 on steroids lol, it s a lovely car and far far superior to the ageing 400s, every car on the market will have its niggles over time.... so in my opinion i say go get the 460

Nobody was going to talk me out of it, I just wanted to know what problems people were having with them, lots of false information on the web about how unreliable modern Lexus are... personally I couldn't see it but knew that asking here would reveal the truth... it seems to be that they are issues with the suspension around 100,000 miles with airbags but my argument would be that they are a service item anyway, even coil springs fail at around that mileage...

I won't be put off, the only thing that could throw a spanner in the works is if I don't get what I think the Rangie is worth...!!!

In which case I may look at a GS450h, but that's another story...!!!

The seats have a fan and a filter. They do actually cool so perhaps a peltier effect system but I'm not 100% sure

    Peter

Cheers, the ones in the 430 didn't seem to get cool, they just blew air at you that couldn't get through the seat because you were sitting on it...!!!

Well thanks for all your informative posts on LS460......boy oh boy am I lucky to have a problem free '95 LS400 LPG convert, sounds like the LS400's were the least problematic lexus ever made & the only ones worth having.

Undoubtedly the 400 was the best made, they even had a forged crank which was dropped for the 430, Lexus bought a dozen S class Mercs, took them totally apart and designed the 400 to be better wherever they could... but alas, nothing lasts, rumour has it that they didn't make much money on the 400 so when they decided to update it and build other models the accountants got involved and quality suffers... They are still streets ahead of the competition though...

I'm on a Range Rover forum and a guy on there who can't even check the oil himself uses the dealer for absolutely everything, he spent £35,000 (no that's not a mistype thirty five thousand) over three years of repairs and servicing....!!!

  6. Thanks for taking the time to type all that, really does seem like they enjoy eating suspension parts... any one I get will have done well in excess of the miles on yours so hopefully some of it will be done already...

I have been doing around 15,000 miles a year so it won't be having an easy life, I don't mind fixing them, just wondered what I was in for. There are various places in the UK who can rebuild your own ECU's so saving money and reprogramming problems...

  7. I have to concur, Waxoyl has stood still, it is the same product it was in the 70's, if you have done what you suggest then the rust will just keep eating away the metal under a nice warm wet coating, rusting out the car even faster, it really is awful stuff, I feel sorry for your friend (As well as the fact he owns a Rover...!!!) Dinitrol is superb though and well worth doing....

i had a clicking from the brakes, very very quiet clicking, but the ls460 is a quiet car, so you can hear it, if you listen out. it went back and forth with the dealership for around 6 weeks with ME telling them what the problem was (brake actuator).. they tried to fob me off by taking me out in another customers LS460 that had clicking brakes, telling me it was normal.. nope! to me that means that customers car is broke also.. in the end they put a new actuator on and no clicking

I've had my keys thrown back at me in the middle of the showroom because i merely questioned why i should be paying £100 an hour when its under warranty

I've been told in the middle of the showroom the operation of a LS460 window is that it should go up and down, nevermind seal properly with the weather strip

I've been phoned on the day the car was due to have work carried out (after having a technician determine what the issue was a few days previously), by the service manager with an attitude and been given the 20 questions grilling as to whats wrong with my car and why... errr speak to your technician! its not upto the customer to explain what parts are required and why.

If it wasn't for me actually liking the Toyota/ Lexus LS brand, id have sold the lot and gone to BMW/Merc/Jag by now

Wow, that's not very good service, I had occasion to use the dealer when I had the 430 and they were nothing but nice... I don't use main dealers for anything these days, I have access to a full workshop so do it all myself...

Just wanted to echo the welcome back. I think I remember you from MB forums too. Was it a CL restore?

Can't help with the 460 but I have an unusual 430 with no sunroof, which means my 6' 5" is surrounded by space in a way no other car has offered me. I share a new knee with you too, but have been lucky enough to not need the hips or spinal pins yet. Good to know it is al working for you.

    Jon

Yes, I wish more did them without sunroofs, it's more the door aperture that limits me, usually too low, the IS is really bad for it....

It was me with the CL, nice car but again only a bit more reliable than a Range Rover...!!!

Fed up with fixing them, just fancy polishing for a change....

  9. Thanks for the info, does sound like you have a bit of a Friday afternoon car... I'm looking at ones that will not fall into the Lexus (and probably anyone else's) warranty criteria so this type of info is very useful, thanks...

I know what you mean about the differences between the older and newer models, this is the same for the Merc, BMW and Audi, I think the Lexus has to be the best bet though....

  10. Thanks Phil, have been reading the USA boards as well, they seem to suffer from different problems than we do, the heat seems to degrade the cars faster in the hot states....

Not fussed on high miles and at least company owned cars tend to get serviced well and problems fixed. The mechanics are pretty bullet proof, just wanted some feedback from UK owners to see if there were any trends, shockers seem to be popular and the GS430, GS450h suffer with them as well so maybe they can't handle the weight of the heavier Lexus...

Just after ammo to shoot the price down even lower......

    Cheers.

  11. Thanks for that Mark... yeah, had forgotten about the gear knob... had to go and find it...

    Gearknob recovering.

Last project was this... a Range Rover L322 converted to a proper off roader, been in several magazines... It's gone as far as is possible and for that and other reasons I want a slightly more reliable vehicle, not that the Range Rover goes wrong more than once a day you understand... I leave the IID diagnostic tool plugged into the OBD permanently...!!!

Anyway, if you want to waste a couple of hours....

    Project Fatty
