Update: I took the car to Lexus today for the timing belt at 10 years, and upon questionning (and i've had a few discussions with them), Lexus have lowered the price of the replacement cat exhaust section (the entire piece of the exhaust, not just the cat.... I was quoted 1200 + vat (and probably fitting), and now it has been reduced to about £700 - not sure about the VAT and fitting.

However, that still poses a better option - 40-50% reduction. Had that have been the case, my choice may have been to go back to Lexus for an original part. Still poses risk of repeat theft, but just fit a Cat guard.

Also makes the used market supply from breakers pointless, as those were the quotes I got for used...

Oh, and they still don't have any available for a few weeks, they are on back order.

I rang Lexus sidcup and she told me to factor in around 2.5k. I thanked her and promptly put the phone down and went to plan B. She also stated a month waiting for stock..

Sorry Andrew, I have no idea what they're like as (thankfully) I've never needed to buy one but they must be alright or the guy wouldn't have any customers.

From other posts on here I think the cost of buying and fitting was somewhere around £350 to £400 so no point involving the insurance. It can't be a difficult job as it's basically only a device that fits to a pipe at either end.

I have decided to go for a metal one as opposed to the ceramic  a Magnaflow Zeller metal. The only Issue I see is where they have cut is around 15 inches gap and the CAT is around 12 inches, so I guess I will need to get 3 inch or so length of piping. I considered going the Lexus route via Insurance but the cost is high and even worse they would come back and possibly do the same thing.

Thanks again to both of you for your help.

Thanks for the Link. Do you have any idea of the quality of these? Also if I ordered the Cat would it be a simple fit ( no idea if they caused more damage from the picture).

I contacted  my Insurance and they will fix, 2.5k from Lexus if a simple job. I have £300 excess plus possible increase in premium though I have protected no claims 17 years, so thinking about the correct course of action.

    Thanks again.

  4. On the HPI it states RX400.

I did notice that the discription was copied and pasted from somewhere. The seller had no V5 and was allegedly awaiting a new one in a day or 2. This was a red flag so refused to depart with a deposit. We settled  on £7300 although I had monies for a deposit, I thought a HPI check was the next sensible step.

I really hope one one falls for this scam.

  5. Hi sorry for the delay in updating this thread however I had the issue resolved last week.

My mechanic non-Lexus, seemed to know what the issue was and told me to bring 5 litres Toyota Type T-IV ATF and a fuel filter. Strange thing was the dealer said there is no filter replacement part Just a (permanent metal one).

I left the car with him for 24 hours and when I picked it up it drove really well with no slipping whatsoever, from what I gather he cleaned the filter refilled a couple of times. I'm not 100% as I was not there.

Good thing is the car pulls exactly the same way as when I 1st purchased.

  6. Thanks for your replies guys.

The car is a 2002 model.

The day before this started happening I almost ran out of fuel. I actually rolled into a garage on the last drop of fuel the car actually cut about 2 feet from the pump, I was coming from work and completely forgot to fuel my car.

I had a leaking pipe about a year ago and we replaced the transmission oil as well as the offending pipe but no issues up until last week.

If it's a serious problem then it'll give me an excuse to get a RX400H :) I've really enjoyed owning this car so will try to get the problem solved.

    Will update you guys.

    Cheers and merry xmas

  7. Hi,

I've had this car for around 4 years and no issues until the last couple of days.

When I start from cold the car takes a few seconds to fully engage the transmission, the revs will go up to 3500 then engage. As soon as it is warm I do not get any issue and everything works normally.

I have checked the auto transmission oil and all seems ok. I will take it to a local garage that does my servicing tomorrow.

Anyone have any other areas I should be looking at to diagnose the problem.

    Thanks in advance

  8. Thanks for all your replies.

So I do indeed have the valet key, According to Lexus Sidcup they told me it is not possible to make a new key/transponder from a valet key and told me £1000+ for new system (ecu). Is Lexus correct?

According to this artical (USA) you can do this from a valet key. http://www.ehow.com/how_7641569_program-key-using-valet-key.html So whay are lexus telling me you cannot make a new transponder from a Valet key.

I want to make a new master key as opposed to the valet key I already have.

    2 options:

1, I contacted a locksmith and he quoted me £300 for the master key and reflash ECU ( not sure if my valet key would work again after he has done this?)

    2. eBay a transponder key from the USA http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lexus-4C-transponder-key-/220836548334?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item336ae24eee £20+ VAT Get the key cut for around £15 and do the programming myself.

My valet key works fine as it stands, just need a backup solution.

  9. Thanks for the reply Steve,

I thought I only had a valet key but realised these do not have a transponder so I guess your right. What is the difference between the 3 button and 2 button? I figure I should buy the 3 button and If possible reprogram using the method in the 1st post.

I was quoted £300 for a locksmith to reprogram the ECU with one master key, however my current key would be useless as I think it would not work with the ECU once the locksmith finished.

Do I have to get the transponder from a lexus dealer or are there aftermarket ones that are very realiable. Also any idea of cost as I do need a backup?
