Side closest to evaporator will be colder. I have seen during a low charge state considerable temperature differences from one side to the other. Mist out of vent can be caused by evaporator freezing up due to malfunctioning expansion valve. When this happens more times then not the a/c will quit working (blowing cold) until the evaporator thaws then the system works normal once again. Check the sight glass for bubble which would indicate a low charge.
