  1. HI Messi

51 is getting on a bit but for a good car I would not agree with Mr Roberts (who in my experience is always rather negative in his comments). I am still using a Toyota Surf M registered (1994) which, although scruffy, is mechanically sound and has only let me down once (recently when the batteries gave out). If the RX 300 has been well maintained and has not done more than about 100K I would buy it if it was cheap enough. Expect it to be thirsty and check the structure is sound (? get AA/RAC inspection or knowledgeable friend to look it over if its a private sale). Check when the cam belt/chain was last changed and be prepared to do this if in doubt if its a belt (not sure about this - seems to be a bit controversial on the 300). May be best to avoid the SEL in case you get problems with the air suspension.

    Bon courage

    Mike

You may think it negative to caution against older cars of this type. However I have said that they are capable of soldiering on BUT there are increasing numbers of people with such elderly cars seeking help on this forum. That speaks for itself. You need to be prepared fro problems occurring, some may be irritating, some expensive.

Isn't that the point of this forum? To ask for help - regardless of the car's age??

  2. I think that if you have concerns over your brakes then you should remove the wheel and inspect them. If you're not confident or skilled enough to do it then get it in and looked at.

If the calipers are seized in any way they may not be transferring even pressure to the pad and could cause uneven wear.

It's also possible that the discs may be slightly warped (especially if the brakes have been hot due to a sticking caliper)

Also be mindful that sounds can travel through the chassis of a car so it may not be the rear at fault.

It may also be something very simple such as a missing anti rattle spring or even a build up of debris that needs cleaning off.

Is the edge of the disc corroded? It may help to clean up the discs with a wire brush to remove any loose rust.

Do you leave the car standing for long periods of time or is it a daily driver?

  3. Hi

    I'm Scott from Stockport.

Currently own a 2001 Lexus GS430 Sport but will be looking to swap for a RX300 as I need something with more bootspace. Gutted to have to sell the GS so soon though :(

I'm not unfamiliar with Lexus/Toyota as I've owned several in the past. I'm also a member of mkivsupra.net and also own a 1994 Toyota Supra Aerotop that I have fitted a Lexus LS400 V8 into.

Looking forward to meeting and chatting to some other members! :)
