  1. Cheers TF.

I (as you may have guessed by the user name) used to do a fair bit in the ICE market. Shall we call it a profitable hobby!

That must be quite handy in these situations then :)

Don't suppose you know if there is definitely a bypass cable available for the satnav models? I ended up buying various leads/plugs to make up my own last time, would much prefer a plug and play out of the box cable.

Sent from my Iphone using Lexus OC

    So you'd think.

I'm going to have to study the pinouts and how the system actually works, I want to add my iPod 160Gb into the system but as you know it isn't as straight forward.

I need to work out all the ins and outs on the HU and amp, how the nav works, and see what can be done with exisiting "adapters" even if it is instead fo the CD changer and I have to codge something to use the stock amp.

Onto my 1 key issue, I have now bought a blank key blade for a locksmith to cut for me, and case and a 3 button remote on fleabay of about the same age and appearance as the one I have, lets hope it'll program into the car...£170 was the quote from Lexus near me.

I can live with the £18 spent so far.

  2. Hello good folk of LOC.

Most of you won't know me, I've been part of the Japanese Modified community for (cough) years.

I have been a well respected part of the Celica UK scene and Jap Northwest (anyone remember the Mascrat Manor Meets off the M6?)

I have been in touch with Meguiar's recently and they have suggested that the LOC maybe book a detailing seminar witht them.

It is free, they run through best practice and you even get some goodies!

If there is sufficient interest then do it! Details are below, contact me for the chap at Meg's email address to organise it.

I'll not be able to make it, I can't get out on Saturdays due to the rug-rats and the other half working most Saturdays.

    Details:

    --------------------------

Thank you for your interest in our detailing Seminars.

Hosting "Workshops" or seminars for car enthusiasts is an important part Meguiar's everyday global activity. In the UK we have spoken at many club regional and national meeting venues about Meguiar's automotive surface care. In the summer months, weather and venue permitting, we follow our PowerPoint presentation with some hands-on practice of techniques and products on a members car, typically in the car park.

With the recent move to our new facilities in Daventry, it is now possible for us to host such events almost entirely indoors, in optimal conditions.

We can also do a live demo at your club AGM or annual meet.

    Our seminars consist of:-

    * A 45 minute presentation of "Best Practice" in the Training Room. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and hopefully dispel a few myths.

    * An hour or so working on a visitor's car in our detailing Bay to demonstrate products and techniques and give visitors an opportunity to try for themselves.

    * Every visitor receives a pack of sachet samples to take away.

We aim to attract enthusiasts with a passion for making their car look the best it possibly can. When such people have experienced Meguiar's products for themselves, they invariably become advocates for our brand.

In the final analysis our motives are entirely selfish.

Our facilities can accommodate 12-20 people, and we will provide refreshments during the morning. We aim to start the seminar at 10am but ask if you can aim to arrive for 09.30am where we will provide refreshments.

    Regards

    Meguiar’s UK

  3. Second for Meguiar's.

I've the NXT Tech wax, easy, quick and not bad.

Although the Gold range they do, high Carnauba wax content needs plenty of work to get the best from it, but a liquid shine when done :)

  4. Well, a 300 mile round trip and I got a cracking example of the GS300.

54K, 15 years old, full LSH, black interior, immaculate in and out.

Only bugs are aircon needs a re-gas, passenger side front has a slow, and there is only 1 master key.

Other than that, so very happy! (i'll sort pictures out later)

Plans, apart from keep her in tip top shape. Figure out how to add in iPod control, and update the nav discs!

    Can't afford much else!

  5. When changing the wheels you ideally need to keep the rolling radius the same as stock, so bigger wheel means lower profile tyre (usually) this also means the speedo will show the same as per the stock setup.

The fuel thing comes down to unsprung weight, lower weight alloys means less effort to turn them thus less fuel used, but this is likely to be in the meters per gallon range of difference.

Call your insurer, and run through a hypothetical change with them, there are a number of modified specialist insurers, I've used Adrian Flux before for some good deals on a mildly modded Generation 4 Celica (1989)

Means if you have an accident you'll get the broken non stock bits covered, and it won't invalidate you policy unlike not telling them!

When I've modded cars in the past i tend to keep the stock bits for reverting to original spec where possible.

  6. They are interchangeable, if you ever need to fix an early car, always buy the replacement from a later one.

That is possibly the most useful info so far!

Found another, going to see it on wednesday. I've never even wanted to travel for 3 hours to go see a car before, this one should be good!

  7. The revised system (oct 2000 X reg onwards) doesn't do away with the accumulator, the master cylinder is made larger and some of the components uprated which certainly seems to reduce the reliability issue.

    Thanks Colin, most appreciated.

I guess they are not interchangeable/transplant able without lots of work?

  8. Lucky escape then :)

    I think so.

I seem now to be looking for the most elusive car on the planet!

If anyone knows it is you TF, the facelift, they re-did the braking system didn't they? So that cylinder (the accumulator) that sits on the firewall at the driver's side isn't there in the 2000 onwards or am i out a bit with dates?

I think it's an X reg i'm after to benefit from the lower tax and the revised braking system?

  9. Well it was a lemon.

Got there, dealer was late, ended up waiting with the two kids (5 and 2.5 Y/O) pester pester, myther myther......

Car, paintwork tatty, rust on the roof line above the windscreen.

D/S flat tyre, needed a jump start, both not that unusual if it has been stored, but that flat worried me - dealer doesn't care....?

Oil in D/S undertray and looked like a leak from the bottom end somewhere (dealer " oh it's where the previous owner missed" - yeah but over the opposite side of the engine bay?....ok whatever)

    Dreaded ABS fault.

No test drive available - blocked in byt he other 30 or so cars he has for sale.

I'll find one, just not that one. I shall avoid that dealer in future also.

  10. Superb!

Thanks Tiger Fish. I've read a few of your replies to other threads on this subject, which have been hugely informative.

Diag ports and paperclips - familiar territory (old Celica Club UK member here ;) )

Excuse my ignorance, the facelift version, what's the difference cosmetically? Just so I can have a look for it!

    Never mind http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/tutorials/article/49-gs-series-ii-facelift-changes-2001-model/

  11. I'm in the market for an GS300, and having found one near to me I have arranged to go and see it on Saturday.

Nice example, FSH (lexus/toyota garage) a tad over 100k on the clock.

Having called the dealer, he's told me that the car does have the ABS light on.

I'll be trawling through the paperwork when i see it, but I am wondering if the common ABS pump issue on the 98-00 models would cause just the ABS light to show.

This is the bit of the conversation that "never happened" apparently the previous owner just takes the car to the Lex/Toy dealership at MOT time, they wipe the light from the dash, MOT and pass it.

    Now this bothers me.

I have read about the buzzer unit that some of you folks unfortunate enough to suffer it's whine unplug. Now I think I want to check if this has been unplugged, re-connect if it has and try to make sure if there is a problem with the ABS, trigger the error.

I welcome suggestions and info on this. I assume that pumping the pedal will give me a good indication if the accumulator/pump unit is on the way out or dead.

What actually happens (apart from the noise) when they go? Do the brakes fail, or just lose the brake boost and ABS?

If I can get the car for the right money I'll look at sourcing a replacement unit and having a garage fit it.....hmmm the right money....

    Thanks in advance
