  1. Using SST tool p/n # 09843-18020 connect the terminals between TE1 and E1 of the TDCL.

    Hi Andy,

I know you have probably checked this but whats the fluid level like? Undo the cap and check that the switch is working properly (by sliding the float up and down while someone watches the instrument cluster).

As maneesh believed the fuse layouts are printed under the cover of the fusebox on the LS400, the EFI fuse is the one you have to pull for >10 seconds to clear the codes.

Also this special service tool (SST tool p/n # 09843-18020) is only a small length of wire with two pin terminals crimped onto the ends. You can plug it into either the TDCL or the engine diagnostics port in the engine bay. Then just count the numbers flashing up on the engine "check" light.

Hope you are well, been away from the boards due to work commitments. Intend to return the rack next time I am out your way.

    Cheers,

    Leadfoot.

Thanks for that I will check as i had the fluid changed.

No problem with the rack if you got the space keep hold of it.

How is the old girl doing.

  2. I have been thinking about getting an LS400 for some months now, mainly to go to work and back.

Since i've had my MR2 turbo, this strengthens the case, as having a supercharged is200 seems a bit pointless now.

So, what can I get for 3k? Can I get air suspension and the like? or is that worth avoiding?

You will get a lot of car for 3k, but not a minter. There will be the usual things like worn suspension (megabucks to replace control arms front and rear), blacked out LCD ac panel. Despite the engine and gearbox being bulletproof, they still require regular maintainance. Make sure the cambelt has been done.

Buy the best you can afford mate. Air suspension is only on imports (Celsiors) and is EXTREMELY expensive to fix on older cars. AVOID like the plague mate..

You just missed out on a real nice low mileage series 3, it was sold by Chris Skelton on here, and he'd spent a good few grand doing a complete suspension overhaul.

The cars for 3k still drive ok, but most folk having never driven a brand new LS don't even realise how sloppy the suspension has become on a 10 year old car that hasn't had the overhaul. Go drive one that's had the overhaul, and one that hasn't, and you will see what I mean dude... :winky:

Just be realistic about what to expect with these cars that once cost 50 big ones..

Oh, and to answer your question. I'd say 3k would probably get you into a MINT series 2 (93-94) model. However, you could also pick up a very high mileage series 3 model (95-98) too. Probably an early 1995 model.

Yes you are right Maneesh, think I would go for the mk2.

  3. I found a LS400 '93 with 36,000km (22,000 miles approximately). The car is in excellent condition, except for a few scratches on the rear right panel. It is a metallic dark bleu with cream colour leather upholstery. If I buy this car, I intend to keep it for quite some time (hence, its low mileage attracted me) and the primary qualities I am looking for are absolute cabin quietness (i.e. low wind, road and exterior noises), smooth ride and operation, and effortlessness of the drivetrain. Will the LS400 '93 meet my likings?

Furthermore, I listen to music alot in my car. So, I really would like to hook up my iPod in the car. Is it possible with LS400 while keeping the original OEM nakamichi player and sound system? How?

Some people told me that it is better to get a recent model with high mileage than to get an older model with low mileage. Is it true?

Finally, some LS owners said that earlier LS (1990-1994) are better than the later LS400 models but they did say in what way they are better. Is it true that the earlier models are better generally?

    Thanks for answering my queries.

If the mileage checks out and the price is right I dont think you will go wrong.

Get the car inspected to make sure all is in order, a small price to pay to be on the safe side.

The newer models are an improvement over the earlier models but you will still get a lot of car for the money and if it was my choice and the mileage is genuine I would rather go with the car you are looking at which you say is in good nick than a newer model with a lot more miles and not in such good nick let alone the possible price difference for a newer model.

  4. Hey peeps,

this is my first post as i picked up my black ls400 this morning!!!!

iam aware from reading a few posts about problems which sometimes arise but the speedo needle is really dim on the end which i need most so its quite hard to see how fast iam going.

Iam not technical enough to whip out the unit and solder stuff so just wondering what sort of cost is involved in getting is sorted.

    many thanks

Ps iam based in Rainham, Kent

    Thanks again

    Mark

Hello and welcome to the world of Lexus ownership and this forum,

I hope you allowed for this in the price you paid as it's a common problem along with the clock/ac lcd

If you look on eBay you will find a company offering repairs for £249.99.( but you still have to remove the dash and send it away!)

Lexus dealer is the simplest but most expensive option

But I think Chris Vince is the forum guru on these matters.

    Cheers,

    Steve

Another one in NW kent ehh - second today! - Welcome to the club!!

Search for Chris Vince on this board - he will be able to help

    Cheers

    Dave

Three replies in 5 minutes are we all off work today?

As far as I am aware Chris only does the climate control/clock display.

You could try these. Item number: 4630468888 on eBay.

  5. Hi,

Strange one this I have lost the sound from my front right speaker, if you turn up the volume and use the fader/balance buttons to feed only this speaker a hiss is heard suggesting output is ok with the audio at a low level in the background.

I've read up on other similar problems which suggest the telephone mute circuit but does this affect all the speakers or just this one and the 94 models?

Additionally even though I have some wiring diagrams none seem to match up to my system.

    Any advice welcomed,

    Thanks,

    Steve

Here are some photos of my system including the boot mount kit

wont do any harm to spray all the connectors under rear seat as I explained in a previous post.

    Thanks Andy,

I wasn't sure as it related to the 90-92 model but will do this tomorrow by the way I had a quick look tonight and from what I've read about removal of rear seat there should be two tags at the front of the base which you pull to release the locking device ( another site suggested a crowbar!!!! what on a Lexus!) could you confirm please and is the connector under the seat base or back part?.

    Cheers,

    Steve

No crowbar needed, pull the base of the seat upwards and it should release.

The connectors are under the base disconnect them and spray/clean with wd40.

Ther is a link under recent post started by tom hadfield which has a link about the problem although the picture is not an ls the principle is the same.

I had this problem on a 92 I owned but think it is related to mk1 and mk2.

  7. Hello Again,

Forgot to mention on my last post that I have now sorted out my defective climate control/clock display in my ls400/Celsior.

Supplied to me as just the lcd panel with no conversion kit required as it has been specially made for the Uk RHD model I have ( I believe) become the 1st Uk recipient.

It's so nice to see the time and set the climate control for these cold days.

Here's a picture of the finished project

PM me for further info and piccys.

    Cheers,

    Steve

Whats the difference between yours and a UK LS 400 mk2.

  8. You can re-set ECU by taking out the fuse for it underneath the bonnet. |f you lift the cover of the fuse box, it should tell you underneath the cover which is the ECU fuse. At least in my GS it does anyway.

Anyone got any pics showing the fuses.

Just had a look shows efi fuse and a large fuse type/regulator showing engine management.?

  9. I am going to do this myself, on my MkIII 1995 LS400, with the help of www.lexls.com and the tutorials I've seen here on the USA forums.

BUT, where to get my parts? I'm waiting for a quote from my local stealer, but can anyone tell me any more about this? or any other warnings.

Any and all feedback greatfully appreciated.

Looks all ok to me Simon.

Would you change water pump, plugs leads etc while you are at it ?.

  10. Had the Lex in for the MOT yesterday and am pleased to say it passed.

Had a advisory note to say the nearside rear lower suspension arm has slight play in pin/bush.

The tester said its not very bad but could knock the tyre out so I want to fix it in the near future.

My question is this, does the arm come complete with the bush.

  11. The stereo in my Ls400 (1992) is starting to play up. Initially it started just cutting out if i cornered, braked or accelerated with anything other than gentleness. Even the change in momentum from pressing resume on the cruise control would sometimes cause it. It's got to the stage now where if I switch the stereo on it works for about 5 seconds then cuts out. The surprise twist is that if I turn the volume control all the way up to max you can just make out the music.

Now I think it has something to do with the steering..the reason being that this morning it actuallly managed to play for 11seconds,but as soon as I turned a corner- cut off. I've also found previously that whilst sat in a car park and turning the lights and indicators on the stereo would burst into life at the point the lights were activated, then cease.

This makes me wonder that it could be something electrical, my firsst theory was a loose earth in the boot maybe arcing out,but then discovering that it was affected with minimum momentum I wondered if it was a trapped wire in the steering column.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Ayn hints to stop it driving me up the wall?

Had a similiar problem if its the same as mine it is due to the phone mute on the wiring loom.

If I remember right you need to take out the back seat where behind the passenger seat you will see a yellow/ orange connecter spray with WD40 and any others to be safe.

The problem is moisture causing the phone mute to cut in hence you cannot hear stereo.

Give it a try and let us know how you got on as it is a common problem on gen 1 models.

You dont need a hands free kit fitted for this problem to occur.

  12. Finally found some that fit.

i have not got any pics unfortunalty to show you but they look great.
