Understood but I'm referring to the £1,000 cost to Toyota per vehicle to put it on a RORO ship and take it from Japan to Bristol in addition to all the other charges.

Agreed, but that charge still applies to a percentage of us sold vehicles depending on factory capacity vs actual North American sales, doesn't it?

There is a 10% import tax into Europe/UK from Japan. The ES for the US market is manufactured there so no import tax.

Only half of us market es cars are built there last I checked. The factory doesn't have the capacity to cover the full market yet. So import charges still apply to some extent. Please correct me, my numbers are a few years old now.

Sorry can't figure out the multi quote function on my tablet.

Shipping charges will also be more expensive to the UK.

Correct, but usa destination charges have little to do with reality. Lexus us destination charges for the es were $1150 while uk destination charge is £700.

  4. Actually the $44590 you are quoting is for the hybrid model in base trim. It's lower than that for non hybrids, they start at $42k. Also those prices include state taxes and destination charges. Let's assume destination charges are the same. Average state tax is 6%. So you need to take that off first before you multiply by the exchange rate and add our own vat. You'll come up £3.3k short to current uk prices, adding a 1.2k pounds tech package brings it in line with the premium here, and adds on top of it a heads up display, but you lose the heated steering wheel. You're still 2.1k worse off. Not bad in comparison to other manufacturers where the price difference is much higher, but worse off to when there was actual price parity on the ES.

You can add the last remaining package at 1.9k pound equivalent, get the heated steering wheel and add on top of our uk premium memory seats, auto folding and tilting mirrors as well as the parking assist, and still have 200 pounds left over.

The Premium Edition had been kept artificially low

Depends on how you define artifically low. The pricing was in line with it's pricing in the USA (after taking the 20% VAT into account and currency exhange rates). I know shock! It's just most auto companies are sure they can keep fleecing British motorists with above market pricing across the board. So now Lexus have brought the ES in line with the other fleecing models.

At the risk of being a nuisance to the dealer I emailed asking for confirmation, this is their reply. So it goes in next week.

    Hello,

We are aware that the vehicle is a ES.

We have been advised that your vehicle could be at risk so we would  like to check this for you once the vehicle is in with us.

    Thanks

    Thanks, keep us posted please.

The security update isn't available for approx. 6 weeks, if not longer.

Thanks. That's what I was told as well. But then I'm seeing people on here booking theirs in already. So I'm guessing a two pronged solution, plate and something as yet undisclosed.

I have just booked my MY22 ES in for the Can-bus protection plate to be fit next week. The dealership described the plate as having warning stripes on it. I have seen a picture of the RX plate but this sounds different , does anyone have a picture of the ES one? It is being fit free of charge with a curtesy car provided.

So it's just a protection plate? No mention of software or security hardware?

Just thought I would pop in, though briefly.  I read this forum quite extensively before I bought my LC about 18 months ago, and it was generally very helpful so thank you to everyone who takes time to contribute and answer.  I must now sadly report I am an LC theft victim, presumably through canbus.  Car was parked outside, in west London, and it was 100% locked and secured plus of course I still have the keys.  It was too far away from my house for a keyless extender theft to work, and a low loader would have been noticed because of limited access.

And the saga continues with lexus seen to be doing nothing.

Sorry to hear your car got stolen, hope insurance value it correctly.

This is the highest level of taxation in 70 years are you proposing to increase it even more to fund public sector demands? 🙁

The reason for the highest level of taxation is to pay back the ridiculous debt the UK is in, with interest!. Debt to GDP ratio is standing at 85.4% (down from over 100% in May last year). Compare that to Germany's 59.8% That means the lions share of those taxes are going to servicing and paying back the debt that has ballooned from so many failed, mis-targeted and overbudget projects (e.g. HS2). Last year just interest on that mountain of debt was 112 Billion, that's nearly 10% of all government spending, you still need to pay back the ~2.6 trillion, and we wonder why taxes are so high??! Essential budgets for police and healthcare were left to stagnate or move backwards to cover that debt. You want those essentials, yes taxes will need to go up until that debt is brought back down to reasonable levels. I'm not talking politics here, just hard cold numbers.

On a more serious subject, I have just had my car back from Lexus after a service, and was told that they fitted new enhanced plates to the car.

I did originally have the plates fitted back in July 2023.

Anyone have any idea what is enhanced on the new plates?

So, they managed to enhance the RX plates, but didn't bother to create any long term solution?! Who cares about the rest of the line up. As long as they are seen doing the bare minimum for the SUV crowd, no offence guys, just the most predominant vehicle type now sold with the highest margin, screw all the other customers. Even LC customers, one of their most expensive vehicles don't matter, no volume there.

What are they thinking? How do they think this is going to play out? Now the RX is the number one stolen vehicle in the uk by percentage. 1 in 46! How much worse does it have to get for them to stop applying stickers and quietly nonetheless?

    Loud recall lexus, you idiots!

I've even conveyed as much to them, even if it costs us money. Because if it's the bottom line they only care about, just charge us ffs!!

I doubt any owner would say no I'm not paying, to save thousands in depreciation, insurance, meager theft payouts...etc.

Sigh.... After the recent attempt on my RX the thieves came back.

Front wheel arch again and presumably they cut through the plate, the immobiliser stopped them moving it any further than about a foot.

Car is now displaying an hybrid system fault, so it's a trip to the dealers to get them to give the car a once over to check and see if I can get a fresh plate installed. Does anyone know if that is going to be a "live" fault or do "historic" faults caused by the thieves display until cleared with TechStream?

More once I've had time to take some pictures and examine under the wheel arch a bit as I need to go to work.

Sorry to hear that. So the plate is a delay as I was told, and they've figured a way around it...sigh.

  13. How about we get Mr. Loophole to look into it. See his comments on the latest Guardian article:

    https://www.theguardian.com/money/2024/feb/24/smart-keys-car-crime-thieves-hi-tech-arms-race

Motoring lawyer Nick Freeman said: “There is a strong legal argument to say these cars are insecure and not fit for purpose. The motoring industry has been negligent. It has failed to prioritise security and motorists are paying the price."

It's very odd and it seems impossible to get a straight answer here.  I have been told by Lexus UK and by my dealer that you only need plates on the left headlight ECU loom and not the right one.  I asked why some were reporting having them on both and was simply told the right was unnecessary.

Colin would be the expert here. I'm just relaying what my dealer told me.

Hi I found this forum / topic after the attempted theft of my 2019 ES last week . Luckily i happened to leave my house just as they were about to steal my car.

Not being aware of this problem my first thought was they were stealing the bumper to order , then when visiting a garage to get my bumper refitted they said they would have been after the headlights because they are so expensive.

It was only later when someone on a local neighbour site mentioned this method of theft that i realised.

A quick question , does it have to be the left headlamp ? If so I'm thinking of parking very close to a wall to hinder access as one measure to put them off.

No it doesn't have to be through the left. The right can work too, it's just tighter to get to the wiring on that side due to fixed solid tubing in the way. Which is why Lexus are fitting protection plates to RX vehicles on both sides. Every other Lexus owner can go suck a lemon as far as they are concerned.
