Is it really as BAD as you lot make it sound ?

Its going to be between one of these and a BMW 320D, I have a budget of around £16K

One concern is the fuel economy being around 44mpg whereas the BMW is more like 50 mpg.

another is the clunky gear change.

Surely it must just be a couple of poor reviews ?

330d/335d is what you want IMHO.

The petrol IS (IS250) is a great car, but if its a diesel you want, then look elsewhere.

Im not worried about the speed of the car at all, just the mpg. Our Company car policy states nothing more than 2.5L

Spec the BMW 320d to the limit and forget the IS220D which has been a disaster since launch. With a Polish engine that seems to have worked well in the boring Toyota Avendis 2.2D, owners have made their frustrations clear with the Lexus Diesel since the day it was launched on this forum. The BMW 2 litre diesel unit has as much poke as the 2.5 litre petrol lexus, and if your budget can stretch to the toys (sat nav, Bluetooth phone, reverse camera and a good sound system), then you will probably be better off.
