  1. just changed my side light bulb in my mk4, u need to remove indicator first held in by a screw then prise out slowly as the's a couple of plastic lugs then the is 3 bolts and a nut to take off the headlight unit then gentle manouver headlight out to get to back of unit to replace bulbs, same for the earlier mk's except side light is where the indicator is on the mk4

  2. well just got knock sensor 1 replaced at lexus aberdeen, this sensor is deep inside the engine and took 5hrs to get to the little blighter and the same hrs to put back together again, once mechanic had stripped engine down he found that someone before had replaced this sensor and had knakkered the threads and had just used liquid metal to fix aka bodge job,(hence why it had moved and gone again) so my lex mech called in a specialist who filled hole up and rebored and threaded it this costed me £155 for that and the sensor itself was £99.61 and 10hrs lex labour was only £210. normal labour costs are £78 per hr but was only charged £35 per hr as car a older model ie 98 mk4 ls400 and on top of that got discount coz he saw me wearing a lexus owners club t-shirt when i dropped the car off, yeehaa wonder wot discount i wud of got if i was a gold member hehe any way picking car up tomorrow all in all inc the dreaded vat came to £545.92, im well chuffed with lex aberdeen, they kept me well informed of progress with the car and kept the costs down without cutting corners
well im not as chuffed with lex aberdeen as i first thought. picked car up today and drove 8mls and up pops my check engine light again and puts me into limp mode, stopped car and popped bonnet only to notice engine cover securing bolts missing and plastic trim next to Battery disappeared since it went in to get sorted, then noticed spilt oil over engine bay and oily hand prints on bonnet and door, needless to say i lost the plot and phoned garage with my complaint on how disappointed i was with the condition i recieved my car back and that it had basically broken down 20minutes after i picked it up, spoke with head bloke and was told to bring car back to be inspected by him as to the condition it was left for me and to pick up a lone car as no mechanics work the weekend only sales staff, head bloke disgusted with condition car was given back to me and agreed to give me loan car till mine sorted(priority on monday morning for mechanics)and cleaned, so now driving a 57 plate is250 till mine sorted. p.s still prefer my ls than the is.

  4. Hello again all you kind and helpful Lexus owners!!

I didn't ask for the moon, but I hoped that a fellow LS400 (1992) owner would be willing to share their copy of the owners manual. I have the CD but not the written part and all the Lexus dealers I have spoken to say it's out of print so they can't order me one.

Yes, I know they appear on e-bay (in fact, I am sure the book from my own car was sold for an exorbitant price just recently!) but I would be perfectly happy with a photocopy or e-mail. I am willing to pay any costs incurred, I just want to be able to properly enjoy this brilliant car!

    :crybaby:

Otherwise this site is quite good, I just cannot understand the 'not sharing my bit' attitude towards new members. (Always excepting the three people who did reply)

i have two ls400 one a 93 mk2 n a 98 mk4, if u pm me ur details i can send u the manual for the mk2 as i have no need for it now postage cost only n its urs i dont see the need to sell it to a fellow ls owner

  5. Hi,

I have tried to find the source of the radio backlighting supply but came to a dead end at connector block #3 but it would seem that when you turn the lights on it is in some way connected to the dashboard providing the illumination supply to the radio.

I will have a look tomorrow and check the supply to the backlights, if it is 12v it shouldn't be too much of a problem to supply this from another source if the dash is presently working OK.

the original problem i had was blinky dash and radio back lighting not illuminating when lights put on, i went to sort blinky dash out and as a bonus sorted the backlighting im not sure which capacitor does what but for 11pence each and a few minutes soldering its worth doing the 3 of them the extracting of the dash takes up the most of the time

  6. You know anyone with an OBDII reader? If so, get them to check the codes for you and report back with them.

Stealers tend to charge a princely sum for just checking codes....call them first to check.

If they do, you'll likely get the codes read much cheaper from an independent garage. That should give you some indication as to whats happening.

Doesnt matter if the light is out when you check - as the ECU should store any previous codes in its memory anyway (freeze frame) as well as readings for all other sensors at the time the fault occured.

Alternatively, if you have a laptop - you can get OBDII readers and software for around £30 now anyway......could pay for itself after only one time....

just got codes read at a toyota dealer. code came up as p0325 knock sensor 1 circuit (bank 1 ) basically engine running slightly to lean so im told and the cost of the read by toyota dealer NOT A PENNY, were as a local mechanic was wanting £40,figure that out!!!

  7. Hi

those of you who have read the previous post will know that im trying to find a fix for my radio LCD backlight which fails to light - During my quest i came across this tutorial which details how to replace the radio LCD when it has totally failed.

the tutorial can be found here:

    http://www.lextreme.com/lcdtech.html

Hope it is use to somebody.

As for my problem i read a post on here somewhere where a guy said he managed to fix his radio backlight with just a few pence and couple of hours work - although no further nformation was given but from where im standing it looks as if he has removed and simantled the unit down to the circuit board and replaced a few bulbs.

But this is all i know so if anybody out there knows anything please let us know - im sure theres quite a few people who could benefit from this cruical bit of info

    regards

    miq

  8. hello all can anyone be kind enough to give me some info on how to sort out the backlight on my radio its murder at night i cant see the display or any of the damned buttons , is it a diy job or a little more involved any info would be really helpfull thanks .

    rick.

i sorted my problem with radio backlighting and blinking dash for the grand price of 24pence and a hour of my time 2yrs back on a mk2, have to look up what i did and i will post the fix up later ok

Hii I read that post, Amazing! There is no way I could attempt that due to my disability. Would you be interested in fixing the problem for me? I'll Pay you of course! (a bit more than the 24p. lol)

its been a couple of years since i did this fix and just found the info again for what i did to fix it,i originally was just sorting my flicky dash lites and whilst sorting that it also sorted out my backlighting BONUS lol. right here goes hope i mind it all. you will need to source out 3 capacitors from a electronic store,i got mine from maplin at a cost of 11pence each(wow the expence hehe) the caps are 16v/10uf, 25v/4.7uf ,and 50v/10uf. first u have to remove dash and get to the circuit boards thes 2 of them a small one and a large one the 16v/10uf is located on the small one identifyed by the code c212 so unsolder this then resolder new one in place. on the large board the 25v/4.7uf is coded c142 and the 50v/10uf is c147 unsolder old then resolder new ones in place. im not great at soldering but managed to do it so u shudnt have to much of aproblem,or get a auto electrican to do it for u at a cost. it took me about 1 nhalf hours to do this myself and cost me less yhan 40pence in parts, i have a diagram of the circuit board and how to remove dash if ur not sure how to extract dash without damaging it. hope this helps. it made my day when i sourced this info and sorted it myself as lexus quoted me £1200 to replace dash p.s this was done on a ls400 1993 mk2..pps heres the circuit board layout with caps highlighted http://apaqdigital.com/ls400/instrument_circuit.jpg here the other link on how to remove cluster www.lexls.com/tutorials/electrical/instrumentcluster.html .............. highlite this then copy and paste as icant get it to link on this page coz me stupid when it comes to computers so the mrs says

  9. ive a mk4 ls and ever since checking fuses by pulling them out to look at them ive had 2 warnings pop up on the display 1st was the vsc which i managed to get cancelled out my self but now my check engine warning display keeps popping up after the 1st 5mins of starting up (only on the initial start up off the day), i stop the car and switch ignition off n on again and its fine for the rest of the day, i always kno its about to come on as car is slightly unresponses on the accelerater n then wee red lite comes on with check engine warning on display, but like i said if i pull over n switch off completly then on again everything is great till the following day wen it all happens again.
