  1. Agree with TheDon.

Gonna upgrade to the D90! lol

No, seriously if you can pick up a D40x or D50 and the 18-200 VR then you will be overjoyed and still have some money for beer.

  2. To be honest you have to be careful not to fall into the same trap as Home Cinema freaks and DIY PC makers can.

    The numbers game.

Just because the spec sheet and a few snazzy graphs look BIGGER and BETTER and HIGHER than older models doesn't necessarily translate to better sound, a faster PC or better pictures.

A pro photographer with a disposable camera could probably get better results than you or I with the latest greatest Nikon!

If cost is an issue I would go for the 18-200 lens and a cheaper older body. (A pro would shudder at the distortion that you or I would not notice and recoil at the thought of this lens and swear that you need many different lenses specializing at different ranges!)

The huge number of megapixels on the D90 and similar is just gonna eat up memory card space, hard drive space, increase download times and you will need a faster PC to process the images.

If you are not going to be PRINTING OUT images >A3 size then you would be better off going for no more than a 8 megapixel camera, allowing you more to spend more on the lens.

  3. It syncs by WiFi and/or over the cellular network.

Yes currently you have to pay for it - it is expensive to provide this kind of back end right now.

With MobileMe you get alot more for your money than just syncing - see the link above.

e.g I can take a pic on my Iphone and seconds later it can be in a Web2.0 gallery for the world to see.

  4. hah no sooner had I spoken than apple adjusted the App Store! Steve and I are real close you see... lol

If you go to a Category - like Books for example - you will now see all the Apps broken down into a Top 100 Paid/Free.

This is the same for all categories. It is not yet the Holy Grail but it certainly helps.

    Expect further changes.

  5. Yup, I have a cranky old D50 and the D90 is what I would buy if I wanted a new one.

If you possibly can the 18-200 VR is a good long term investment.

I have a 18-55 and a 55-200 and it drives me mad with the inconvenience.

As for pic quality, stick it on auto and press the button. You will be amazed.

Not sure about the new SD cards. I guess this only matters if you are rapid shooting, as it were.

  6. :D

Parthiban: Syncing is a no brainer. iTunes handles it all elegantly.

You could always get MobileMe which syncs on the fly.

Add a contact to your phone and it will appear on your Mac (or PC) like magic via the "apple Cloud" and vice versa.

Same for Calendar events, push email etc.

You can even upload pics direct from your Iphone to your website!

The only time I plug my Iphone in to the Mac to sync is if I am swapping out loads of toonz or a film or two.

  7. Paradroid: You must take any external drives off the Exclude list and they will be backed up also. (System Preferences/Time Machine/Options) They are added to the Exclude list automatically, you have to remove manually. :)

The advantage of a wireless backup like Time Capsule (http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/) is one of security and convenience.

If the bastards nick your PC then you still have your data on the Time Capsule (that was hidden away somewhere of course...)

It also backs up multiple machines.

My Mac Pro, iMac and MacBook are all seamlessly backed up on the hour every hour by Time Machine.

    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/timemachine.html

I can return any file or folder to it's previous state at any hour since I activated it months ago or restore a whole machine if it gets nicked.

As a bonus it's an 8.0211g/n base station and has a USB port for wireless printing.

  8. Hi Rob,

I use this quite a lot

    http://appshopper.com/bestsellers/free

There are some RSS feeds on the homepage that you can check every day to see all new apps and price changes and updates etc.

I will let you know if I find anything else.

iTunes will have its system updated soonish as there are just too many apps for the current system and it is not so easy to search any more unless you know exactly what you are looking for.

  9. That is explained quite clearly above.

If it wasn't for companies such as apple - ie FORWARD THINKING - then you would all still be sending smoke signals.

Joe Public WILL be dragged (clearly kicking and screaming) into the world of mobile computers rather than mobile phones whether they like it or not eventually.

Computers tend to transfer files with e-mail not Bluetooth...

  10. You think the cavedudes with the cool buggies want to go to the same places as the old-style buggy dudes chill out!????

Why would an Iphone user want to communicate with anyone from the 90's? ;)

I show them a few Iphone apps - usually a game and iPint and a few swishes a my lightsabre - and point them towards the nearest Car Phone Warehouse. :)

  11. Steviewevie: That's right.

If apple were around in prehistoric times, while Microsoft would be selling cheap buggies to all comers with square wheels, apple would have been the ones selling buggies with round wheels.

They would not use square wheels just cos everyone else did - they would use round ones because that is the way to do things, even if the users and creators of square wheeled buggies don't know it yet.

    You got it in one.

Progress. Thank god for the likes of apple dragging consumers out of the past and forcing companies to deliver a better experience to consumers.

This is what apple does better than any company in the world.

  12. Sparky:

    a) Read the first line.

    B) I posted a link to show that this can be done and free software is available and so should be also on Windows.

    OK?

    Right.

I have in fact been looking for something to do what he wanted, rather than making an even more pointless post than you thought mine was.

    Try This:

It looks quite scary but the Beginners Link may be the place to point your friend

    http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/how-to-edit-m...video-files.htm

EDIT: I think that was the same software aquanuke linked to! Oh well!

  13. I have seen someone using one.

It's basically an N96 with a different shape and a slightly more advanced interface.

Once you have configured your home screen and added pics of your most called contacts and moved these preset frames around a bit you are about done with investigating the touch screen.

The tedious menu systems are still alive and well.

And it's running the same old (slightly tweaked) OS.

And have you seen the price?

Nokia will do themselves no favours if they market this as an "Iphone "killer"

But for those with fat fingers? Maybe ideal - so long as you are not expecting to want to use them much.

Price/performance? Our survey SAYS..... da daaaaaaaaaah

  14. One for this festive month...
