  1. Dan: I have 2 cards.

For Mac OS X I have an ATI Radeon 3870 (soon to be replaced with a 4870)

For Windows (which I ONLY boot up for games and a few proprietary apps for work) I use an nVidia G9800GX2.

Mac OS X doesn't yet have drivers for the 9800, but this really doesn't matter as the only game I play on the Mac - World of Warcraft - runs fine on my "crappy" 3870 at 2560x1600.

You are absolutely right about the Xeons, but the MacPro is in that kind of ball park.

Are they REALLY expensive for what they are? The only box you can run all OS native speed 100% and legally. The ONLY box that can run Mac OS X 100% - no viruses. A Unix box aswell.

Oh and they have superb connectivity and they sure look good!

Is it overpriced? I don't think so.

  2. Why on Earth you guys spend so much time picking such a great car and yet put little or no thought whatsoever into choosing the a computer is baffling.

I understand you love your Macs fella, point taken,

but I couldn't afford a MAC notebook plain & simple, plus the software I am used to using for work purposes is designed to run on windows,

(although may well be able to run on a Mac)so I bought what I thought was a good branded laptop running the same operating system

as 95% of the rest of the world.

Also I did spent time and effort on selecting the spec of the machine within my budget, and actually went over by a small margin

to get something that looked like a good buy (spec, brand name & price), and to claim I didn't is actually quite insulting.

Don't get me wrong, a Mac isn't for EVERYONE, just a hell of a lot more than the 8% or so currently using them.

A NEW Mac laptop will be about the same price as a top spec PC laptop. They are top spec machines and not competing in the bargain-basement market. If you are not looking for this and can put up with Windows then sure - get a PC laptop.

BUT a 2 year old 2nd-hand Mac laptop would beat out a new similarly priced PC hands down. Price is NOT an issue.

    eBay is your friend.

I didn't mean any insult whatsoever, I was more having a go at those who write off Macs based on hearsay and urban myth rather than discovering the facts.

  3. Maybe you can.

But you are stuck with Windows and all the headaches that brings with it. Why waste 20% of your CPU cycles on antivirus, anti-malware spyware etc etc ??

It's like building an Aston Martin and then filling the tank with treacle.

    Pretty pointless.

    :)

My Mac Pro, 8 Xeon 3.2GHz processors, 10GB RAM (can have 32GB), 4TB HD, 64-bit OS X monster wasn't cheap, but it runs any OS I want as fast as I want and it connects to anything I want and can do anything I want it to and will last me for years. It's the mutts nutts and it looks beautiful inside and out.

I am happy to pay for a machine like that.

  4. Why on Earth you guys spend so much time picking such a great car and yet put little or no thought whatsoever into choosing the a computer is baffling.

I would have expected those who choose the quality of Lexus to also be choosy about what OS they use also.

    Weird.

Mac OS X is the LS600h of operating systems. And a Mac can run all that Windows nonsense 100% anyway. Why limit the software you can run by choosing a Windows box?

    Wise up.

Anees: It seems it has been a long time since you specced up a Mac laptop and a BRANDED PC laptop. A Mac costs way more!? Maybe a few years ago...

While I am at it... http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/18557/

  5. Tigerfish: OK whatever you say. You can go on about the survey all you want, it doesn't matter, that was one link out of hundreds. Just keep your eyes open and you will see what the world thinks of the Iphone. :) I hope you thoroughly enjoy your N95 and will be very happy together. After all, not everyone WANTS an LS600H.

Geoffers: Learn to read. Where did I say I had every model and software version? I said I had any phone I want. I have played with and tested many many models including all those touted as "Iphone killers". Most of them are utter junk and I wouldn't DREAM of using any of these as my everyday phone - you are absolutely right - as they are utterly useless and frustrating next to the Iphone.

You are funny. I am a fan of the Iphone and apple products for good reason. They push technology forward rather than wallowing in mediocrity like Windows and other handsets. Like Lexus. What is wrong with you that you can't see this? On one hand you choose a Lexus above all others for good reason and yet you don't have the ability to see an industry-changing product line when it slaps you in the face. Which if you are in any way connected with the mobile industry is embarrassing. I don't give a hoot what position you have in the industry - but it certainly isn't as any kind of visionary.

The Iphone isn't for everyone of course. But those who have used it and UNDERSTAND the end to end software delivery and still can't see how huge this is need to wake up.

You can keep moaning on if you wish but this will change nothing. Will you still be posting this nonsense when the Iphone is as popular as the iPod? Good luck.

This product line is kicking the industry up the ***** and one day will be seen as the one that defined the industry for the next 10 years. Mark my words.

I just have to sit here and wait. What are you going to do as it gradually dawns on you?

  6. Rob: Ok you win this time! ;)

Redz: You seem to be under the illusion that specs are what matters in a phone and not useability. If you seriously think the N95/6 are better devices than the Iphone then I suggest you actually USE an Iphone. Those phones are just AWFUL. Really. Clunky, ugly, ghastly unwieldy menus system, HORRIFIC browsing. OMG I feel physically sick just thinking about them. Please don't quote me megapixels. That old chestnut is SO tedious. If you want a camera buy a camera. People will vote with their dosh.

N95 is free for a reason. N96 is just a service pack!

The Iphone is not a wolrdbeater huh? Let's see. :whistling:

Aido: Yes I do love apple products. Just like Lexus they CARE about their products. They produce products that they want to use. Not just high-specs. These things WORK!

Well spotted about the screws. You are absolutely right. Just like the iPod there will be companies sprouting up to change batteries. they are probably offering this already.

    Speaking of batteries... http://www.pcworld.com/article/148348/3g_i...ats_rivals.html

I do post about cars now and then! In the LS430 section!

Not tried apple condoms yet, but I will pass on your experiences of the taste to my GF and see if she wants to try... :whistling: :winky:

  7. I am not tunnel-visioned due to ignorance I am tunnel-visioned through having vast experience within the IT and mobile sectors, and thus a clear vision of what succeeds and what doesn't. The Iphone is a game-changer, like the iPod. It has and will turn the mobile industry on it's head. Which is a GOOD thing!

I have no affiliation with apple other than being a minor shareholder, but please don't think my posts are in order to increase the share price, (If ONLY that were possible!) I bought into apple in 2000 as it was crystal clear to me, when Mac OS X first came, out what apple were going to achieve. I was right, but this is only the start. I suggest, as I did on this board many many months ago that anyone do the same. In years to come the apple story will be talked about in University's the world over. And maybe one day you will realise that I am not quite as barmy as I may appear. :)

If you took your blinkers off you would clearly see that the survey also includes other popular brands... and therefore is a level playing field... :)

hehe yes I agree it is up to the mobile phone companies - however the limiting factor in the network build is not the network operators but the planning permission required in order to provide the coverage you deserve.

If you give the nod I could arrange for some ex-colleagues to come and build a mast in your back garden. I am sure this would improve your coverage no end! ;)

  8. To be honest, these issues sound unrelated to the Iphone hardware and the store she is going to is giving bad advice.

Firstly, as far as data is concerned, that is all just a direct sync to iTunes, so it is probably an issue on your Mum's PC. Perhaps some of the iTunes data has perhaps somehow been corrupted. I wouldn't DARE suggest that it may well be related to Windows, which she is most likely running - but it could be. :whistling:

As far as the dropouts, this will be down to AT&T's dodgy network, which by all accounts is rubbish, however nothing to do with Iphone hardware. All phones on that network will behave similarly. She should perhaps move house like Tigerfish.

If nothing else the Iphone is helping with population distribution. :)

  9. I really don't think you took my comment as it was intended, it wasn't meant to offend in the slightest and was tongue in cheek. I do apologise if it offended you in some way.

6 iPhones, is probably a record. There have been very few reported hardware issues, just minor software bugs in old software versions. Perhaps she kept getting replacements from the same store and hence the same faulty batch. But let's not pretend this is a widespread issue. Look at the customer satisfaction link above.

Good evasion of the subject matter BTW. Let's keep an eye on X1 sales.

    PS Keep your hair on!

  10. Maneesh: firstly I was talking to Tigerfish, secondly it's time u learned what ;) means.

I am bored of answering 6 year old BS about replaceable batteries that have been talked to death all over the net. Try Google. Look at the iPod and think.

Robb: yes the X1. I look fwd to the non-event of it's release. You are confusing specs with a useable portable computing device people crave. I can just see people queuing all round the world for it now...NOT

No other devices have the end to end software delivery system of the iPod and now the Iphone. THAT is the point.

As for ur mum, she must be a special lady! Faults and bugs huh? She could get good money working for the X1 team! Let's not exaggerate Rob... :)

  11. hehe I know better than to bang my head against a brick wall Tigerfish! If everyone had an Iphone there would be nobody for those with us with iPhones to look down our noses at! ;)

The Iphone can't help you move house, although you could look for a new place on it's amazing hi-speed browser! :)

Maneesh: Ye old replaceable Battery one eh? *sigh* Yeah what a flop the iPod has been because it has no replaceable Battery...

Come on - you can do better than that! :)

It does baffle me that a collection of individuals such as those on this forum who have selected their car with such care and do not do the same for other things. A phone may be more personal to some than their car so why not put some effort into researching it rather than rely on hearsay. Very strange. I would go so far as to say the Lexus ethic - the care and effort that goes into their cars is similar to the care apple put into their products.

  12. Iphone naysayers...

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/07/14iphone.html

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/07/14appstore.html

The few people here to try an Iphone and NOT like it are in the minority....

The Iphone has the highest customer satisfaction of ALL phones by a MILE.

    http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/...m-trails-at-54/

The single thing that puts the Iphone ahead of the rest - the iTunes Application Store. THIS is the single most important thing above all others. iTunes was the reason the iPod is where it is today, the iTunes App Store will be the reason the Iphone comes to dominate. (You can access it by clicking the button on the left of the iTunes Music store)

The Iphone tsunami has begun. Just watch :)

PS Geoffers: I design and rollout mobile phone networks and have had any phone I want for free with unlimited usage for years. The Iphone knocks them all dead. Patronise someone else. :whistling:

  13. For those randomly comparing Iphone sales with Nokia and WM and the like - umm think for a minute.

How long have Nokia been making phones and distributing GLOBALLY?

Iphone is available in SIX countries only (for a few more hours...) and for what - a year?

WM is an utter flop - only 20M phones?? That is utterly pathetic for a global distribution.

apple will top 10M in 2008 easily with ONE phone. WM is on countless models!!

apple make a huge amount of money on their phones and revenue sharing than Nokia do on their feeble efforts.

How sad for Nokia to build its flagship model and have to give it away as a free upgrade as no one would pay their hard-earned cash for it.

apple has the luxury of being able to drop its prices whenever it wants to. But why bother? People are buying them as fast as they can build them.

The Iphone 2 will speak for itself.

swcdfan: you will get ur wish sooner than you think.... :)

Tigerfish: All you needed to do was buy AAPL 8 years ago and u'd be retire by now...
