  1. Well I thought I'd update you guys when the car went into my local garage they took the rear callipers apart and cleaned and reassembled them and they say there is no more binding. However I have to say I wish I could get the car on a ramp so I could check this for myself, anyway the uotcome.......I still have a rubbing noise coming from the rear not as bad as it was initially but still quite present. I have been busy with work for the last week though and haven't been able to take the car in yet again. I plan to call them up again soon and get it looked at once more, to me the noise sound like it could be backing plates but I'd like to see it up on the ramps in person though just to check the wheels are spinning freely. I'll let you know what happens guys.
  2. Hi guys just wanted to update you once again, Andy form Lexus Poole was brilliant and on Saturday I took my car there and we took it for a brief test drive and popped it up on the car lift for a look around. The front it appears is now fine however I have either a sticking slide pin or sticking piston(s) on the rear callipers. Both sides of the car are effected and this can be easily seen when the wheel is spun only to come to an unnatural stop shortly later. There is some very clear binding going on there. So my car is in today and will be checked out to see exactly what is causing the binding, whether it's the pistons or the slide pin that's the route cause. Hopefully soon everything will be sorted. Big thanks again to Andy for the help on Saturday and all the best for him on his time off, I have to say I'm somewhat jealous that he's off to see the BTCC though!
  3. The noise is still ever present but I'm off to see Andy at Lexus Poole this Saturday to see what he thinks.
  4. Well the wheel bearing was replaced when the new flange was installed on that front drivers side. Also they did check the hub assembly when they changed the flange as originally they thought perhaps the whole hub assembly would need replacing but it turned out only the flange and bearing needed changing. So hopefully the hub assembly is OK as they would have looked into it then. As for the heat shield it's difficult to say for sure I have kept trying to push the shield back to alleviate any contact but it hasn't helped so far and as for the possibility of the shield wobbling about again I can't be certain but from having tried to push it back numerous times it is pretty firm and as such I would have thought unlikely to be wobbling. I'm most likely gonna get it booked in with Lexus and see where we can go from there.... Thanks again TigerFish
  5. .....Right well leading on from this last post of mine I had the car in at the garage today and they have put the spring clips in place that TigerFish kindly pointed out. I thought that would be the end but it's not, driving the car home I have to admit it is much better and at 30mph the noise of the pads touching the disc is almost undetectable, that is until you turn hard left at which point you can once again clearly here the noise at that speed, better but still there. Also at lower speeds thing are improved but by no means gone I can still clearly hear the noise at crawling pace and in all honesty this is really frustrating now. I'm gonna have to get Lexus to check things out. Anyway I thought I'd let you know how things are going.
  6. I hope that does solve the issue for you buddy but I have had that done in the past and yes the noise went away but it always came back.
  7. ...and a further update. I have just spent my lunch driving to the garage and taking a couple of the mechanics out to listen to the noises being produced. Sure enough they all heard it and agreed that it sounded like pads making contact with the discs. Anyway through conversation I got on to the subject of the spring clips that TigerFish mentioned in this thread. In the mechanics word "Oh yeah they are definitely there, one on each side", at this point I stopped him and informed him that there is supposed to be two on each side. He replied with "yeah but I didn't have any in the workshop", can't bloody believe it! I'm thinking well what did you do with the ones that were there in the first place? Just goes to show once again what a resource this forum is. So the springs are on order and will be fitted on Tuesday next week this hopefully will finally mean that the pads are properly held in place and away from the disc surface. As always I'll let you know what happens. Thanks
  8. Just another little update the touching sound is still there and again can still be made more apparent by turning quite hard to the left. Last night I gave the backing plate a decent tug back but still no change. However I have paid a bit more attention to the noise and can now hear that it does continue when the car is under braking. So it would seem it's a bit less brake related and more likely the dust guard. I'm thinking that perhaps the reason it went away and came back again could be that the mechanic re-greased the parts including any likely contact point between the disc and the guard then as the grease wore away back came the issue. Anyway I will be taking the car back into the garage again at lunch to go over things once more....
  9. Oh hey in the image that you showed here is there much disassembling to be done other than removing the wheel to clearly be able to see these clips? Thanks again.
  10. Cheers for checking this out TigerFish. Yeah once the car had been back to the garage it was fine I drove it with the window down and radio of and any left turns I made I paid particular attention to the noise being generated when steering left. I have to say there was nothing to report it all felt perfect and sounded fine but then by the afternoon of the following day I heard it again. There is every chance that the sound returned before then but I thought it had been cured so I didn't pay enough attention to have noticed before then. In answer to your question about does the noise stop under braking it is a little difficult to tell as the sound that's there is either going away or obscured by the normal sound of braking. Thanks for the image I will pop the wheel of and check this tomorrow night I hope it is that in away because at least then it's easily rectified. I will still be calling the garage today and probably drop the car back in with them again to have them take yet another look if only because it's free. But if they can't sort it I feel a trip to WIM or Lexus coming on and if/when they sort it a strongly worded letter sent to the garage that's been doing my work so far. The saga continues........
  11. WIM isn't too far mate but it is far enough, I had the car WIM'ed last year and so I made the effort to get there then and if I lived nearer them I would have gone there like a shot in the first place as they did a top job last time I went. Overall I think the round trip was about 350 miles'ish. I may well make the trip again if my giving the backing plate a good push doesn't sort things out tomorrow. As always thanks for your help and I'll keep you all updated.
  12. Hi everyone again this is the first chance I've had to reply, so as I said in the last post I took the car back to the garage that day for them to check things out. So I left it with them for a few hours and the garage called to say that the car was ready to collect. When I arrived there they said that they had rechecked all the work they did i.e the overhaul of the front calliper and they regreased everything just in case. The mechanic does admit hearing the noise when he rolled the car onto the ramps, anyway in doing what they did the noise disappeared that is until the following afternoon where it was as present as ever and could once again be heard really clearly when cornering left and putting weight on the front drivers side wheel. I have also noticed that at really low speeds approx 5-10mph the touching sound turns into a continual high pitched noise again sounding like contact. I have quickly checked the backing plate but tomorrow I will put the car on full lock and really push back on that plate to see if it's the cause. The only reason I haven't done this yet is because I assumed this would have been rechecked by the garage especially as I mentioned it to them. Anyway I will do this and then keep you guys up to date tomorrow morning. I just want this all to end once and for all. Thanks again guys. Mark
  13. Right well guys my car went into my trusted local garage today and as planned it was to have a full service, new discs and pads, new break seal kit on both front callipers, all 4 pistons replaced on the front callipers and finally new slide pins for the front callipers. So basically a service and a front break overhaul, mainly in an attempt to get the issues I have spoken about here sorted. So I picked my car up at 6:00pm having left the car with the garage at 7am that morning and being called at lunch time to be told all the work had successfully been completed. Fantastic I felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders at least that was until I drove the car home paying attention to any noises I came across. The first thing I heard was the all to familiar sound of brake discs rubbing against the pads coming from the drivers side front wheel. At least I'm pretty certain that this is the cause, it is a sound that intermits as the wheel revolves and if I corner left at say 25mph I can hear the intensity of the sound increase as the weight of the car moves over that wheel. Even when driving in a straight line though with no extra stress of steering acting on that wheel I can hear the scrapping sound become louder and quiter as the wheel revolves and the discs come into contact with the pads and then move away again. According to the garage the car was test driven and checked! I can't tell you how annoyed I am this problem just doesn't seem to want to end! Ormi, Andy, TigerFish what do you think the cause could be and what would your suggestions be? I will call the garage first thing tomorrow and tell them what's happening and they will no doubt want to take another look, quite honestly though I am about ready to take my car to Andy and the guys at Lexus Poole just to check things over and see what they come up with. This is past rediculous! As always guys thanks in advance for any help you give I really appreciate it.
  14. Are you aware of any clunking issues with the rear discs and pads, similar to the kind you can get when installing non Toyota discs and pads on the front?
  15. Hi buddy I found these on ebay and it seems a great price for the pair so according to the labour pricing you have their you would probably have them fitted for under £100! Not too bad, only thing is I would check and make sure they proper Lexus/Toyota ones...... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-FRONT-LOWER-BALL-JOINT-SET-FOR-LEXUS-IS200-99-05_W0QQitemZ220535819392QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=122131476177&rvr_id=122131476177&cguid=325f546b12a0a0e2047163a1fffd466e#ht_518wt_1137
  16. I tend to get about 28 MPG but I have found that Shell's new Fuel Save does actually have a positive impact. Worth looking into guys!
  17. Hi Guys, this is damn common sadly and I have suffered with this issue for some time and in replacing discs and pads it disappeared and returned a while later like most peoples experience. The good news is I've finally and definitively got to the bottom of this and the problems are sticking pistons which cause the clunking and creaking. Word of warning from someone who has experienced this first hand make sure you get this sorted because the heat caused by the sticking piston(s) can and will warp not only your discs but possibly your entire hub assembly ££££££! I had mine get so hot it warped the flange on the drivers side, my local trusted garage didn't pick it up and my local Lexus dealership hadn't come across the problem either. However talking to a regular user on here, namely Ormi we have diagnosed the issue. To get to this point I have gone through 3 sets of discs and pads and a flange kit. Now I am replacing all four front pistons and having the seal kit redone on both front callipers plus new discs and pads fitted as they are once again warped. Anyway check out my thread it covers the whole thing, I hope it helps because I don't want people to have to spend all the money I did to get to this point. Sort it early and save yourself some serious cash. http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=68235
  18. I agree buddy, at the moment I'm going with them this time because they are supplying replacement discs and pads so they should too really. A lot of work could have been avoided if previously when I asked the question "What could have caused this?" They actually thought to look further than the end of their noses. When the car goes in I am also going to have a direct chat with the mechanic who will be working on my car so I can make sure smaller things like the ring at the foot of the slide pins are reseated properly after fitting. I'm going to go as far as typing everything up into a list and then I'll go through all that was done with them after the car has been worked on. Also I'm gonna talk through every step of the process and mention the fact that I will be having the car WIM'ed a week after the work is done where all works will be checked. It's a real struggle finding a decent Garage though and I can't afford Lexus hourly rates sadly. To be honest I don't think they are always a bad garage, fine for servicing and when a definitive task is set but I just don't think they know the car well enough to think further forward. I'm completely of the mind set that if work needs to be done or can be done to avoid later problems then do it but I suspect like most garages the majority of their customers want a low price and just to be told it's sorted. To be fair if it wasn't for this forum then I'd still be in a position where in 6 months time or so the discs would have warped again and the flange would probably need replacing again too! I always research my problems on here and this shows it really does pay to do so. I just wish I was Ormi or Tiger fish's neighbour things would be so much simpler! :winky: There are hardly any forum members from down here in Dorchester so my local pool of practical skills and advice is limited. Anyway thanks to you all again.
  19. hi mate, well it depends on how bad the pitting is on the piston this is were common sense comes into it if it looks really bad replace it they are not to costly approx £20-£30... Hi Ormi, with the seized calliper pistons is it usually the case that one or more of them are seized and also how many pistons are there in total? Thanks There are 2 pistons per caliper :) Andy Cheers andy! :winky:
  20. hi mate, well it depends on how bad the pitting is on the piston this is were common sense comes into it if it looks really bad replace it they are not to costly approx £20-£30... 21. Wow, thank you everyone your help as always is top notch. My thanks are especially for ormi and Andy! Andy could you perhaps PM me a price for you guys to check and clean the calipers and potentialy seized piston(s). I believe it is only the drivers side front that is effected, I'm not sure if you give prices over the forum like this, if not I can email you via your work email. Im considering having the guys at my local garage do the new discs, pads and slide pins as they are paying and then having andy check and refurb the calippers the following day. Thanks again guys, so pleased this will finaly be getting sorted one way or another.
  22. That's fine Andy I appreciate you even taking the time to look, I'm thinking it probably is a case that the discs were slightly warped at the time of the flange being replaced and as such have gotten worse over time, so hopefully the garage will sort this out as the car goes in towards the middle of next month. Thanks.
  23. Slight Update here guys I have been on the phone to my garage and told them of my issue and they are going to replace both the discs and pads FOC which is great news. I have taken the initiative to also order some new caliper slide pins too in a bid to stop any rattling, knocking brake pads. Plus I think I'm due another service so that will no doubt be done at the same time just trying to remember which service I need, I think it's the 90,000 one despite my car not having covered that mileage by quite some way. Anyway I do hope this at least ends the reign of warped discs that I have experienced, then I can concentrate on ridding myself of the knocking brake pads. I'm pleased with the likely outcome but not yet convinced, I'll be pessimistic until a few months and several thousand miles after I've had the discs. However next time I buy discs they will be OEM just to rule out the possibility of mildly incompatible discs. To think this whole thing might have been avoided had I bought OEM on day one I just wanted another disc because OEM's produce so much break dust. Anyway.... To those of you that I have asked to take a look at this thread I would still very much like to hear from you and see what you have to say. Thanks and as always I'll keep you updated!
