  1. Agree with John above - more important to stay on top of the front in recognising when they require replacing. That said, i have just been out in mine after replacing all the pads, and along with the re-greased pins, what a difference in the braking - Replaced them all with Mintex pads, I have never gone for the fancy green or red pads etc, just made sure the ones i have used have been a recognised brand.

The brakes are a lot more sharper than before and stop very very well.

    Thanks  everyone.

Went in to ATS today and they spent 90 minutes and cleaned the brakes and replaced bleed nipples as blocked and bled new fluid in. The rear nearside did have some air in as went round each caliper. Pads and disks/calipers all good. Said may need to change rear pads as 4.5mm of pad left. Said If I want to supply they'll fit them. Old brake fluid was dirty/old.

    They now work much better!

    Many thanks. James.

Dis they take the calipers off when they replaced the bleed nipples?

You will find that theres not a lot of meat on the rear pads from new - the braking distribution does not rely on the rear pads like it does on the fronts, Think it is something like 80/20 or something like that. I have just changed my front and rear pads today (inbetween the rain showers - forecast was dry!!) The rears look like they are the ones on the car from new, stamped with Toyota on the backs of them, car is 13 years old although low mileage.

Pins greased on front and back calipers / oil changed / oil filter changed and i scrubbed the wheel arches today - was amazed at how much muck came out of them as they looked clean.Coated all mechanics and rubbers with WD40. Started at 11am and finished at 1:30

If it ain't broke don't fix it!!     According to Toyota / Lexus,  The fluid in ur expensive car is the best of the best and is good for the life of your car! These days engine's and transmissions have parts that are pressure sensitive and fluid levels that are crucial to the millimeter! Lexus will only change fluid if it's essential may be a problem with the transmission!

Its an old post - had mine done but only partial as per the previous post from 2017. I didn't get the benefit from it really as 3 months later the car was written off. I can remember noticing a difference in the gearbox, the changes were smoother especially when cold.

Oil will break down - the oil taken out of mine was black, certainly saturated with broken down oil - the question over the claims from Lexus is how long do they determine your car to last - look after it and if can be a lifetime- dont and it wont be long before it needs attention. Can be proved by ownership problems from these where the calipers are not looked after and sieze.

The gearboxes in these get hot, they are cooled by the engine coolant system so it is important to look after them else the oil is going to start to breakdown. There were a few issues reported (not seen any lately) and i had it myself with the box solenoid throwing out a sporadic fault code which interpreted to a condensation issue. That and oil dont mix .... Mine had been looked after but i have no idea how it was cared for for the first 60k miles before i bought it - got to agree with sourcerer (John) above, if you want peace of mind and continued reliability then it is a good idea to get the fluids etc done when you buy a car, only to know they have been done.

  5. Never heard of a chain going in all of the years i have owned one of these. People on the forum with twice your mileage with no reports of issues with chains....

Would only put it down to the car not being maintained and the chain has stretched a bit

Since you replaced the sensor have you reset the ecu?

  6. If the caliper is in that position there are one of two things:

    1. The pin has freed from the caliper mounting itself (it is bolted on) but i cant see a way if it is free like that for you to remove it

    2. The pin is free in the housing and needs a bit of rocking back and forward to ease the caliper off.

Heat may help but be careful not to damage the rubber boot. Try tapping the caliper with a metal hammer to see it it will budge but not too hard but I suspect from the picture and what you have described that if the bolts loose then its a garage job - more than likely a new caliper

To get it to that position was it tight? Did it feel like the pin was undoing? I am not sure how these are threaded, whether they are reverse threaded - maybe someone will shed some light on this... if reverse threaded then you might be lucky and manage to get it removed with a bit of force.

You should be greasing these at least once a year - its a known issue with the calipers (do both front and backs). If not done then this is the result.

  7. Removed the backing from my old IS (see picture) and updated the grille. Have removed it from my current one also as it does improve the airflow. Cant say i have noticed any issue with heat...cant say due to the removal of the backing either that i have noticed any more debris entering the engine bay (i thought i would but not noticed)

Not removed for any performance related issue - just wanted the grille to match the lower one so never re-fitted the cover back with the new grille.

    Here you go:

    https://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/116346-spark-plug-replacement-again/

I was wrong in that guide about the original plugs being platinum - I think they are in fact Iridium but with an additional platinum pad on the centre electrode. The IKBH20TT ones are 'new technology' iridium TT spec - a more advanced design (they also include platinum). The claimed service life of TT plugs is 120K km (72K miles)

    Thanks John

  9. Does anyone know of any issue in removing the plugs - my IS is 13 years old and almost at 37k miles. Is there a stipulation in the service for these where the car reaches a certain age and they are done or is it 60k and they are done. It has a full Lexus service history up to 2017 at 25k miles

So at 12 years when i bought it woudl the plugs have been changed under the service requirements or does it actually have to get to 60k until Lexus woudl change them. I am just wondering with the age of the car and them possibly not being replaced would they have rusted in place it at all possible?

Nothing wrong with it, just a question regarding the possibilities

    Hi all:clapping:

As the car is still under the Lexus warranty it needed a MOT so the dealer had the task.

It passed it’s test but mentioned the rear brake calliper was sticking but was ok when the brake test was performed.

This thankfully has been cleared as a warranty job so will be done at service in September.

They did a vehicle healthy check also and advised that the front tyres inner edge were wearing so a 4 wheel alignment would be a good idea but at £144.00 not keen on this.:schmoll:

Have seen the 4 wheel alignment at ATS euromaster for about £60.00 any one used them for this service or should i stick to dealer and have to swallow the cost.:tongue_ss:

    65mike.

Mike, I have used ATS, only because its my only real option around here - nothing else is local. I used them to align all 4 wheels when i went from 17's to 18's as i noticed a bit of wear on the inner edges on the fronts - that was a year ago and to date have had no issue. I am pretty sure it was around £30 and they did have to adjust them.

  11. How would you put a value against this car.

2006 IS250 SE-L (13 years old) - the only issue with it is a stone chip and a scratched alloy wheel.

Service history to 25k miles and receipted service items after that. Currently on 36k miles.. Car is auto, has the ML system and has a sunroof and is metalic blue/grey. Everything works and drives like new. MOT history shows it has never failed an MOT or even had any advisory issued in its 13 years life.

We have not long bought a motorhome and the car, while i have been putting 1k miles on it a month for the past 6 months will be sat for a while now as i have just changed jobs also and this monthly mileage will be down to 65 miles. I am not going to get the use out of it so am toying with, at some point next year, looking to trade in two cars (this one and the wifeys) and look for an SC to share driving with the wifey.

I will probably change my mind when it comes to it but what woudl you think the value would be bearing the following points in mind

    • Its 13 years old (14 by next year)
    • Low mileage (expect it to be around 40k miles)
    • Absolutely spotless (apart from above)
    • Part service history and full receipted

I am guessing the age of the car will be the deciding factor?

Hi thanks for this, I have done 250 motorway miles in since it has been done and it is no better. It does it when the car has warmed up and the smoke coming out in continous for a while and then stop but will do it a few more times until the end of the journey. The warning lights didn't come back on. I usually do about 200+ motorway miles a week but I do think the drop in miles due to illness and tootling along smaller roads has probably caused it! I am going to take it to a different garage today and see if they can come up with something. The whiring sounds when in 2nd and 3rd gears needs sorting too! I am wondering if it is the turbo! Oh what joy! I want my old toyota avensis back! 254000 miles of trouble free motoring until it was written off 😞

Wasn't it a case in the "good old days" that the smell of eggs coming from the exhaust was an indication that the head gasket was on its way out?

  13. My eldest lad is interested in buying an IS200 (he is 28) - i had one years ago and it was my first Lexus.

I have a few questions as i cant remember what the costs were...he is after a manual one (i had an automatic)

    1. Whats the tax per year?

    2, Whats the MPG (approx)

    3. Anything to consider when buying the manual version - clutch etc

    Pretty sure thats all.... thanks
