  1. The head gasket has both water and oil channels cut into it, so it depends on how it fails whether it is water or oil that is leaking.

    The reason it hasn't been mentioned is that the OP says that the dipstick shows no oil being consumed.  Would be handy to verify this, along with the colour of the smoke before worrying about specific diagnostics.

    Phil is right though that the head gasket is a distinct possibility.

  2. Ok, I just spoke to a guy called Chris at Toyota Warranty Dept on 0330 100 3312

    He told me without question that the standard factory fit stereo and sat nav systems are covered.

    He also confirm that previous service history before the warranty period is irrelevant and the only thing that matters is getting it serviced by the dealer at the right time during the warranty.

  3. Yeah, Reading do seem a little fuzzy on the warranty details.

    Did they tell you that it doesn't matter where it was serviced?

    It is a little bit of a trek, but if you get no joy, you could try their Edgware Road dealer.  They gave me no hassle and did their best to help me out.  Having said that, if it is Lexus UK that is being stubborn, a different dealer won't help matters.

    Does your have a full Lexus history then?

  4. Lexus Reading are open till 6pm, so I just spoke to the service department.

    He told me that electrics, including the stereo and speaker system were covered by the warranty.

    Although they were a little unclear as to the service requirements for eligibility of the warranty.  The guy told me that it needed a full Lexus history, whereas the other dealer I have used, Jemca Edgware Road, said that the previous history was irrelevant as long as you get it serviced at the dealer on time during the warranty period.

    Having told him this, he asked his manager who said that as long as the car had been serviced, it didn't have to be at Lexus beforehand.

    So there seems to be a little confusion on some aspects.

    Blue smoke generally denotes oil burning, so I don't think it would be the 5th injector.  From my understanding, blue smoke is oil, white is water and black is fuel.

    Having said that, only happening for a short time is unusual.  If it was worn rings or valve stem seals, it would either do it at startup and while driving, although you might only see it in your mirrors if using the car hard.

    How long has this been going on and how often do you check the oil level?

  6. Damn, that is a lot of gunk.

    There was another thread on here a while back of someone with the same problem.

    I suppose it shouldn't come as too much a surprise considering how often we have to clean the EGR valves.

    Still, this does begs the question, what made you take off the manifold in the first place?

    For someone like me, who's 220d has 116,000 miles on it, it can be tricky deciding when it is a good time to give it a clean.  I did try sticking an endoscope down the manifold when I last cleaned my EGR valve, but I couldn't get its head around the bend.

    I assume it was several hours labour cost to remove and reinstall everything?  Considering it is almost all labour that the job consists of, we need someone to post a detailed guide with pictures of its removal, so that people like me who are too chicken to try it might consider having a go. :smile:

    Had no idea what a Magnehelic gauge was before now.  Nice to learn something new :smile:

    I am tempted to get my Techstream software out now and see what mine is doing even though I don't have any white smoke.  When you say the pressure values were all over, what kind of readings were you getting?

    Either way, I suspect you are going to be helping some members with this info, so thanks for the write up.

  8. Has the dealer told you they have given up?  No way.  If so, I would contact Lexus UK and see what they say.  There is no such thing as can't be fixed.

    As for the wiring loom, I wouldn't even want to contemplate redoing the wiring on a car like this.  The complexity must be ridiculous.  So good luck to you if you attempt it.

    Oh, and didn't you tell the dealer to most important part?  Namely, the people on this forum that desperately want to know what is wrong. :smile:

    This is unbelievable.  Are these people Lexus Technicians or are they people that just point at random parts that might have failed?

    After all this, I am beginning to think that perhaps one of the new parts they fitted might also have been faulty.  Might have to start going the other way and fitting parts from your car to another one of theirs to see if that car replicates the fault.

    Don't give up mate.  Just stick with it and force the dealer to find the fault.  After all, you have already spent quite a bit of money changing parts that they recommended.
