Hi Dan,
Yes thats probably why its cheaper than the later cars. I've got a '96 one now and insured it with you.
Cheers, Duncan

Thanks guys.
I've already watched the wheeler dealers episodes on youtube, I might try and get another unit and swap it out rather than go down the soldering route.

Thanks guys, I'll start looking and see if anything takes my fancy.
Stuart you should see a section at the bottom when writing a post that says drag files here to attach or choose files. Give that a go.

Well after a 7 HR round trip I have a new to me LS400. You can't tell from the pic but it's very dark green.
Lovely driving car but it should be with a new mot and only 56k on the clock!
Haven't really got any jobs to do to it. The stereo display is knackered and the heated seat doesn't work but apart from that all good so can't complain.
Completely different driving experience to our other two cars. You forget what the visibility I'd like in old cars. Thin pillars etc.

Can anyone tell me what wheels from other Lexus models fit the LS400?
Just watched a wheeler dealers episode on YouTube and they fitted some IS wheels?

Actually Malc, I think your right but thats when your using the whole tube of it not just a quick squirt.
-
Pass, but how much money and time do you want to spending messing around trying other tyres out? I think its worth a shot otherwise the tyres probably duff anyway.
-
Try a bit of tyreweld. A 5 second squirt and then a 10 minute drive. Had a slow leak on the GS, would go down 10 psi over a week. Tried this and worked a treat. Worth a shot for a few quid.

I've had a quick google and it looks like there are two capacitors that the solder fails on and stops the bulbs getting power. I can't find a guide as to how to take the radio out and do this yet though.

Have you checked the throttle body? It could be sticking.

Hi,
When you have a vehicle in mind if you need any help with insurance at all then please feel free to drop me a line.
Regards,
Dan.
Hi Dan,
I'm with Flux at the moment. You insure my Camaro. The MK3 LS400 seems to be very reasonable on insurance but the Mk4 400 and 430 are quite high. Is this due to the early cars being classed as a classic?
Cheers, Duncan

Hi all
I've been on the hunt for a decent LS400 for a couple of months now, Been to see multiple examples that have just been terrible and not as described. I am after a decent example that must be 1998 or older for insurance purposes. If you have one you would like to sell please let me know its will be going to good home where it will be cherished and looked after, I am from Wolverhampton but willing to travel if its the right car. I am not sure if i am allowed to list my contact number, so i am sure someone from the administration team will let me know?
Thanks
Samuel
Any luck finding one? I'm in Shrewsbury so not a million miles away so probably cross shopping the same cars. I went to look at one in Stoke a couple of weeks ago but it needed too much doing to it. Pity as it was a MK3 in the silver grey with dhp wheels, looked good.
A MK4 is up for sale in Shrewsbury, its okay but I think I rather have a 430 for the price it'll end up going for.

I've always found oponeo to be good, the tyres I've had off them have always had a date within the last 6 months, and that was on 275/40 R17's. Not exactly common.

Well, try again, heres the ebay list today, you have quite a price range to choose from, £1,200 to £ 7,000
Yep this is pretty much my daily search! Except I just search Lexus LS incase any LS430's come up.

Where the spare wheel sits there where two holes. I could see the ground, presumed rubber grommets of some type sat in them but had been removed. I'd call them drain plugs but I've probably got the wrong terminology!
-
Ok don't kill me for not buying it!!!! Haha.
The problems by themselves are not necessarily the end of the world but all together then it puts me off.
I think it's sat for a number of years and recently returned to the road. No recent paperwork. Last invoices from 2013. The inside smelt damp. Also the fog lights didn't work and one reversing light was out. All small things but the list just grew and grew the longer I spent with the car.
I can afford to be picky, I'm not desperate for another car at the moment so I'd rather walk away and wait for the right car.
He would only budge £50 on the price. Oh and he wouldn't actually put a Mot on it if I paid for it. Sold as seen.
I have to say though the tick list was used and I appreciate all the input to make it, very helpful.

So........
Been to see it today. First impressions, it looked good. However, lots of small things which amounted to me walking away unfortunately.
Bonnet struts, heated seats no working, one front indicator loose (broken), boot seal leaking, boot floor cover floppy, no spare wheel and drain plugs missing, slight bubbling on passenger rear arch, bubbling on edge of windscreen on drives side.
Went for a test drive. Drove well, brakes seemed to have a lot of travel on the pedal before they did anything, is that normal?
I did have a quick look at the service history had a belt done at Lexus 128k no mention of water pump. Flsh up to this point.
I think it's been sitting for a number of years and been put back on the road last year.
I think I'm best of waiting for a better example to come up. If it was a grand then it might be worth the punt but not at £1.5k.
At least I've been and seen one and driven one.
-
Thanks all for the pointers. I've made a list!!
Fingers crossed its a good'un
Oh and I've checked the recall info Malc, you can do it online with the reg. No outstanding recalls so should have been done :)
-
Thanks for the replies. I've spoken to the bloke at the garage and I'm going to see it on Saturday afternoon.
Belt was changed at 127K so thats a big tick. If I'm happy with it he's going to MOT it before I buy as long as I pay for the MOT. I think this is fair as it does have a MOT to April on it.
If its close to the condition that it looks in the photos then it should be a good buy hopefully. Plus its my favourite shape with the DHP alloys.Would someone be kind enough to write a checklist for me that I can copy and paste into my phone? I know its a big ask and I have read the forum but I could do with a check these 5 common issues etc.
Cheers, Dunc

What is are all your thoughts on this LS400. It's not to far away from me and its cheap. Really don't want to spend much over £2k on a 400, I'd stretch to £2.5K for a 430.
I know the wheels need a major refurb but the MOT history looks reasonable for a car of this age.

Thanks Malc, I thought it must have been lowered. I managed to find some pics online of one's that haven't been lowered and they still look good in my eyes.
