Welcome to club. As you can see this is the place to come for advice. However even before you collect your car you might now be worried.

My advice: Get in car with key in pocket, press start, when ready comes up select D and drive without worry until at destination. Put in P, switch off. Let the car look after everything which it will do very well.

  2. Thanks Christopher.

No I hadn't checked and yes I had accidentally pressed the button. I have never used this feature and I think my Mk2 GS had it too and I never used it there either.

What the manual doesn't tell you though is that whilst in normal operation you can open the boot with the car locked, if you open using the key as I did late last night the alarm goes off.

Will this work for you too Rob?

I recently (before) lockdown had a cheque to put in the bank. When I got the nice man explained I could have deposited it by phone banking. Since then I have. The banking app gets you to photograph both sides of the cheque and then it is deposited electronically. Just keep hold of the paper cheque until it has cleared.

    Les,

Thanks. You learn something everyday on this forum.

  4. Steve,

I have a Samsung portable DVD writer SE-208 that was under £20. I am shocked to see that its price has risen hugely (>£100 if available!). And it is USB 2

However there are USB 3 drives under £20 on amazon like https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B085D955TC/ref=sspa_dk_hqp_detail_aax_0?spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExN1ZPWU00MUo2SklVJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjg1MDA2MlM3VVpaWUJZWkRZWiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNzU0OTgwMlE5U0FET1NXTTdDUCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2hxcF9zaGFyZWQmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl&th=1

You could borrow mine but  time postage back and forth will approach cost of new drive.

    Absolutely. Very sophisticated.

Just not sure it's using a neural network in its usual meaning.

I agree with you two guys on this. My 2007 car has incident radiation i.e. sunlight, sensors. The algorithm may have improved since 2007 but neural network? We should be grateful the words "turbo" and "laser" have not been used.

  6. Peter,

Beware. This may not do what you want. I had one of these AA panels and sent it back.

Note the Peak output is 2.5W i.e. maximum current into 12V Battery is about 200mA. The average over 24 hrs will be much much less. Bitprius tells me the drain on the Battery from the alarm is about 50mA on the 450h. (There is the self discharge too.) I assume this is going to be about the same for other models. He suggests that a 20-30W panel is required.

I bought a 20W panel but its claims are bogus and I suspect many others are too.

The solar radiation at noon at the equinox (about now) at latitude 51 is about 800W per square meter. My panel was about 40cm x 16cm i.e. about 0.064 square meters. Thus the radiation on it will be about 50W. Now factor in the conversion efficiency and 20% would be very good and it is down to 10W. To get this you need the panel  square to the sun. Lay it in the car, even stick it to the inside of  front or rear windscreen and it will not be square further reducing output. The glass of the windscreen will also reduce it further.

My conclusion is that unless you buy a much bigger panel you may slow down the running flat but you will not prevent it.

    Others may disagree.

The Lexus mail I received this week says switch on the car for one hour every week (and don't have A/C on or listen to radio etc). This will work.

  7. Andy,

As Richard said his comes up when something is on. Is this so you can have traffic announcements perhaps?

Why not disconnect the feed to the aerial in the boot?

Just sending mine back as it does not provide enough current to maintain the Battery. At least in the ad above it says 2.4W which the ad I bought from did not.

Go for at least 10W but the ads for these things are a minefield of misleading information. e.g. I found oner ad with 25W on the photo, 20W in the title, and depending how you interpreted the data in the description perhaps 15W there. I asked for clarification. Nothing yet.

Just having a brain fart, but would the woven cloth heat wrap I have seen sometimes on exhaust systems be an option?

Texas could be right. This stuff has got to be worth a £10 punt to save an otherwise serviceable system.

I don't know where it would be best to apply it but as Nemesis says adding weight will alter the resonant frequency and this stuff might add damping as well.

With regret I have decided to SORN my car even though I have only just got it back on the road at the beginning of March. Because of the Corona Virus I am not likely to need to use it, and it seems pointless keeping it taxed at around £30 a month, and not use it. My wife has an Aygo that only costs £20 a year to tax so for local outings if needed we can use that,
It is most unlikely that the restrictions will be lifted in the next 3 months. If I do wish to use the car I can tax it on line at any time.

In the mean time as the car is close to 150,000 miles I have ordered parts to give it a head to toe service including changing the coolant pump, drive belt, timing chain, plugs, all fluids, filters and gearbox oil pump bearings. I can take my time doing this, and it will give me something else to do outside on pleasant days other than gardening.
I am going to flush the engine oil, and refill with 0w16  Toyota synthetic oil
I have over an acre of garden consisting mostly of an old orchard, and grass for witch I use a sit on mower to cut. I use the old oil out of my engine in my Briggs, and Stratton mower engine, and in my 2stroke chain saw for both the engine, and chain lubricant.

I will also service the Aygo leaving out the timming chain change as this although 14 years old has only done 75,000 miles.

    John.

    John,

Wonderful! I'm not on 150k yet but can I book mine in please?
