    They are... in theory.

Tell me how insurance companies "private" database which "secretly" collects the data about customers for "fraud prevention" is compliant with GDPR. Could I get copy of all my data, including meta data and explanation how it is used? I actually should try and see what happens when I put in SAR, but I am sure request will be rejected because they deem it sensitive to the business ("fraud prevention").

PRA and FCA has nothing to do with insurance per say, they simply regulate financial part i.e. that you have right amount of collateral and that you T&C, have right limits of liability. It does not regulate the prices of insurance you your relationship with customers.

Sure FCA in theory has such powers, but they choose not to use them. The new regulation which forces you to offer the same price to existing customer as new is in practice unenforceable. Why? Because again the process in which price is decided is not transparent and FCA simply could not check if you have abused it. Well I guess they could, but they won't.

You as well forgotten to mention FOS... completely useless, I had claim with them for unclear/conflicting information in insurance contract, but they said contractual matter is outside of their jurisdiction. They agreed that contract terms were unclear/wrong, but that they have no power to apply penalty on insurance company due to contractual matters and advised me to take insurance company to court.

PCI DSS - again has nothing to do with insurance, this is just standards for handling card payments security.

I mean c'mon... At least make half convincing … Do you think I and stupid and you just going to throw few abbreviations to me and that is job done?

Regarding gender... you know it is not that simple. If it would be that simple insurance companies would be long sued (and they were sued in the past) for discrimination. But when insurance companies asks for 100s of irrelevant questions, it is easy to hide any bias or discrimination.

I am sure you won't answer, because you can't, but here is the actual quote - explain me what it is if not sexism. Site - Compare the market:

    1. Male, 13 years experience, 4 years NCB, 30 years old - insurance £1400
    2. Female, 0 years experience, 0 years NCB, 24 years old - insurance £1580

All the rest is the same. Name were made-up, accounts were brand new, vehicle was selected from drop down instead of entering the VRN, license number not provided.

As well just for comparison... when I was 24:

    • Male, 8 year experience, 0years NCB, 24 years old - Insurance £3300 Car insurance category was 29E instead of 40E.

Obviously, I am not expecting to see convincing answer as you could not provide one... there is no justification. And I am not even saying it is "unfair for man"... it is unfair for everyone... it is not like £1580 is fair price for female either.

Merely stating that your comments that they are unregulated and private is complete BS.

Yes, absolutely... and that is why I always thought that legal minimum TP insurance should be either provided by government, or it should be strictly regulated to make sure it is fairly prices and criteria transparent and non-discriminatory. This being legal requirement there should be no behind the scenes shenanigans..

After that.. if you wanted comprehensive cover, gap cover, excess cover, cover for your belongings, modifications... or whatever else - that could be free for all, free market, whoever needs it could have it if they feel it is worth the price. And then I think the price would be much fairer, because once you could legally drive it would become nice to have and insurance companies would have no leverage (at gun point) to force you to buy product you may not need.

As it happens now - you are legally forced to have the cover from the private company without any oversight or regulation and they can literally charge you anything they like, they don't need to justify the price, they don't need to prove it is fair and incriminatory... and if you can't afford it... well then you can't drive. It is basically private companies which decides whenever you could or can't drive...

I should have left it but please stop spreading these "lies" 😉

Insurance companies are regulated by standards set by PRA, FCA, GDPR and also PCI DSS amongst others.

Gender neutral is a regulation.  If you called your insurance company today and said you identify as a "woman" you wouldn't suddenly get a discount.  If you were a woman and called to identify as a "man" then you wouldn't suddenly have to pay more.

Many insurance companies are listed on the LSE such as Aviva, DLG, Old Mutual Wealth so are not "private"

You keep coming up with these sweeping generalisations though.

I can hear the marketing cogs in their offices whirring around already...

You will probably find they will tempt people with freebies rather than a price reduction instead.

I think Go Compare or one of them offered to cover an Excess, Meerkats was the meerkat and the cinema (we had every bloody meerkat at one point) and I think Confused had the dine out card.

You will probably find they (companies not the aggregators) offer amazon Alexa's, Google Homes or similar instead to get around the pricing.

I'm certainly hoping that for starters this will indeed stop this element of gouging (loyal) customers - it will then be interesting to see how aggressively companies compete for new business and whether it stops some of the churn.

I do wonder if there will be some loophole like "brand new customer discount" which won't apply to existing or previous customers.

Not unlike Virgin Media or Sky...  Get everything for £50 if new customer or pay double that if existing 😉

Since ditching the high performance, highly modified cars of my youth my insurance premiums have equated to approximately £1 per day and in recent years more like 60p per day. A small (might even say trivial) sum to pay allowing me to do something I really enjoy.

I remember those days like it was a good thing at the time.

When I was 21, I lived with 2 mates.  One had an Impreza Turbo Catalunya edition, another had a Suzuki GSX-R 600 and I had an Honda Integra Type R (one of 3 I have owned).

Insurance was 2k, 1.2k and 1.6k respectively.  Had a bit more disposable income then (no mortgage and no wife/kids) so saw paying that much on insurance as a rite of passage.

Funny how you get older one of the few things I can enjoy is cheaper insurance although I have started modifying the Type R already 😉 and yes the mods are declared on insurance 🙂

But then why can insurance companies lop say 30% off a premium when you say you can get it cheaper elsewhere - if the risk profile is the risk profile then the premium is the premium?

This is where the new FCA regulation will come into effect.  One of the insurance companies we support already does this.

I know this as we made the change to the policy, billing and claims software which produces the numbers 😉

Yet they absolutely do that. Last year we checked insurance for my gf because she were looking to get driving license and she herself said it absolutely does not make sense and is openly discriminatory. Assuming she get's insurance on day one of her license with 0 years NCB and 0 years experience her insurance would have been £1590, mine with 15 years experience, 5 years NCB was £1400 at the time! And just to make sure it does not take into account some unknown information, we created 2 brand new clean e-mails entered identical generic details and the only difference was the age, the gender and the driving experience/NCB.

So please stop with these lies ... the way insurance price is determined in UK is basically a miracle and nobody could explain and everything is secret and nobody scrutinises it, nor they could even if they wanted to.

This whole not charging existing customers more than new customers is absolute non-sense. When you ask million unnecessary questions to give a quote, and it could generate billion different scores, then who is to tell whenever renewal price is fair, unfair or is it more or less than existing customer.

Even where example could be found it is very easy for insurance company just to say, that the price given was generated by algorithm from various (and unknown criteria) and thus the final price is not discriminatory, but simply based on "risk" which was calculated.

Same as insurance companies charge more for TP only vs. Comprehensive policy, more for keeping car in garage vs. keeping car on the street etc. That clearly makes no sense, but answer is always the same - it is algorithm and it is based on risk... we don't know why but if algorithm says to overcharge you 10 times over then what can we do?!

I would love to explain how actuaries create prices based on risk profiles per individuals but you will accuse me of telling lies regardless.

    Have a great evening

    That’s an interesting comment.

Are you concerned that you might unwittingly be committed to a higher premium, despite the discount?  Do you not get adequate prior notice of the renewal?

Obviously individuals and Insurers vary, but I don’t see the problem with auto renewal.  Or more precisely I’ve never had a problem with it.

Currently we have one car insured via Saga, with whom I negotiated a fixed price three year deal.  So that auto renews.  The Lexus Is through the AA and the opportunity to cancel the auto renewal is part of the renewal process.  However our annual dance is rather like this: The AA sends a renewal advice about three weeks ahead.  This is usually a few days after Saga has sent a new offer to attract the Lexus.

I ring the AA and ask: why is the renewal, say, £180 more than last year?  They reduce the premium.  I then point out that Saga is still more attractive.  They then match the Saga price.  This process has worked well for all involved for some years now!

I agree that it all rather depends on the auto renewal notification arriving before the date, rather than after.  But that has never happened so far.  Should I be incapacitated by injury, senility or death, then the car is at least insured, which would not be the case if the insurance was allowed to lapse.

I may have missed some obvious point, but I’m intrigued as to why you dislike auto renewal bearing in mind the security it offers as well as the opportunity to negotiate- or even cancel - the premium.

They always ask if I want auto renewal on but I say no.  I don't have autorenewal set purely because I will still check with on comparison sites and also via Quidco in case the cashback sweetens a deal further.

I get more than enough notification for renewal, I just do a bit of research and then invariably call the staff shop and renew.  We have a multicar policy and also house insurance with same company so you end up with a 25% discount on the cheaper of the two policies as well 🙂

    At present I have a 2018 FK8 Civic Type R & the wife has a 2011 Alfa Giulietta 1.4 Turbo.

Type R is £170 with £250 compulsory excess.  Giulietta is £200 with £250 excess.  So £370 per year with protected no claims bonus.

    I am 41, she is 40.

Zero points and max no claims

Both cars insured for business, commuting and pleasure (not sure dogging is included 😉 )

12000 miles per year (although I did about 5000 in 12 months and the wife about 3000 due to lockdown and working from home for over a year now)

Both cars kept on driveway overnight.

Staff discount obviously makes a huge difference although I should imagine the Civic is so much cheaper to insure because if I prang it, they only need to buy off white Lego pieces to fix it and a couple of pieces of Gorilla Glue.

Oh...  and aware I am on a Lexus Forum while owning a Honda...  I am keeping an eye on the forum as my old ISF is about to be put up for sale so I am intrigued to see if/when it turns up for sale and at what price 😉

I recently wrote to my MP about car insurance (having had the pleasure of renewing three car insurance policies for our family recently), namely the ridiculous charade each year with the current insurer regards renewal prices and the difficulties (barriers) they raise to cancelling the auto-renewal in a bid to lock people in.

My MP raised the issues with the Association of British Insurers and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and I received (through my MP) replies from both. The replies were quite detailed, but in a nutshell can be summarised as:

The FCA has proposed pricing changes which focus on the renewal price for customers being no greater than the price offered to new customers, which the industry is committed to implementing. Part of those proposals, which will come into effect in the end of 2021, is for insurers to make it easier for customers to cancel their auto-renewal, should they wish to do so.

We can only now wait and see if indeed the FCA has the teeth to make such changes stick...

It is happening.  Members of my team are working on a project to implement this at the moment.  It's an FCA regulatory change so insurance companies have to respond.  It's not dissimilar to the gender neutral regulations where insurers couldn't charge more/less if you were male/female.

In theory, a renewal price should/will be the same as if you were a new customer.

That being said, I still don't auto renew mine even with a staff discount 😉

It's that time of year, looking for a better price on insurance. Who would you recommend?

Has anyone heard of or have any experience with "Quotemehappy.com"?

Quotemehappy are Aviva.  Comparison sites or official term "aggregators" are all owned by major insurance companies or banks.

They also "brand stack" where they put brands they own in a very close price bracket and basically fill the screen with the majority of brands they own.

I work for a rather large insurance company who own a smaller Bournemouth based company.  My wife used to work for said Bournemouth based company setting up the brand's on the comparison sites.

Car insurance is relatively cheap at the moment.  I have just renewed my FK8 Civic Type R and the wife's Alfa Giulietta for £370 for the year with a £250 compulsory XS (staff discount helps).  Thought it was funny that the Honda came to 170 for the year and the 10 year old Alfa was 200 🙂

My ISF was just over £200 a couple of years ago

    Good hunting 🙂

  11. In terms of the dump valve type noise on the gear changes...  I am 99% sure it will be the serpentine/accessory belt slipping.

Very common on ISF.  Mine did it in the 4/5 years or so I had it.  It didn't bother me.

I believe it's a fairly cheap fix to resolve.  Needs a new belt and tensioner.

In terms of the ticking noise starting up, could well be the injectors.  Mine again was noisy on start up.  The bloke who bought mine off me had the injectors replaced which quietened them down a bit.

Cool, have you any plans for it or keeping stock although it sounds as though its good enough as is.

love the colour by the way got to be the best shade for these saying that every type r looks good in white and then there's the nsx id absolutely love one but there a bit overpriced now.

    https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/honda/nsx/honda-nsx-type-r-49-500km-one-of-five-in-the-uk/10538167

    NSX-R...  Yes.... 🙂

All I have done for now is a drop in air filter and intake pipe (similar to the HPS pipe and Tom's filter I had on ISF).

I have the 2020 floating discs to go on to improve braking although the standard drilled discs were fine on track.  I also have Dixcel pads to go in before Germany

Only major(ish) thing I want/need to do is change exhaust but it's one piece so I have nowhere to store an 11ft long exhaust at the moment and it will be a faff to swap it back if I need warranty work done.

Before I take the plunge, I need to hear some exhausts 1st hand as most the YouTube videos sound awful.  I may just have to accept that it's gonna sound awful and make V8 noises as I am driving 😉

nice review ive seen a few about about the styling is starting to be a little easier on my eyes, one thing i noticed when i was behind one was the spoiler does it affect your view at all?

Nah, you can't see the spoiler at all from my seating position.

It pretty much follows the roofline whereas in my old Integras, the spoiler was right through the middle of the rear windscreen.

  14. Morning,

Just in case anyone is interested 🙂

Just over a month now since I sold my beloved ISF and bought an FK8 Civic Type R so thought I would post a quick things I like, dislike, miss, regret and so on....

Historically, I have been a massive Honda fan which started when I was a kid in the 80's...  Senna in a McLaren Honda, the dirt bikes on Streethawk (and Streethawk ofc) and then sat in a Honda NSX in 1989 as a 10 year old at the motor show with my Grandad which sealed the deal...

At 21 I bought a 1998 DC2 Integra Type R which started my Honda ownership journey...  I replaced the Integra with an S2000 at 25 which went well but didn't handle anywhere near as well as the Integra.  The S2000 was replaced by a DC5 Integra Type R which was ace but I sold it to raise funds to move house and swapped it for cash my way plus my friends 1998 DC2 Integra Type R which reaffirmed what a great car the DC2 was (I was too young and not a good enough driver to appreciate my 1st one).

Eventually, I went for something different, a Nissan 350Z.  I loved the looks and the noise but it wasn't fast enough.  It handled well but always felt like it needed another 50 - 100bhp to make it the car it should have been.

A baby due meant the time for a bigger car...  Queue the BMW 335i M Sport.  Great car when it worked.  Unfortunately this "Approved Used BMW" spent 11 weeks over the course of 12 months at BMW having turbos, injectors, fuel pumps, waste gates & lambda sensors replaced.  Suffice to say, I am weary of BMW's.

Went to replace the BMW with...  shock horror...  an FK2 Honda Civic Type R...  Took the Mrs to see it and she wasn't happy...  "You can't spend 33k on a Honda" was the response...  queue my friend mentioning the Lexus ISF which I hadn't thought about and found one for 22k (I think it was) which the wife said was "much more reasonable" until she found out it was a 5L V8 but deal was done and it was on drive so 1 nil to me.

4 and a bit years and some 50k miles later, I longed for an FK8 Type R (possibly to do with Honda winning in F1 again) and one turned up at the dealer I purchased some of my previous Type R's from.  A quick phone call and a socially distanced viewing at my house LED to me placing deposit on an FK8 subject to test drive (I had driven one on an extended test drive before lock down so just had to make sure it drove and stopped).

Put my ISF up for sale on here and Facebook for a fairly low price which took into account the TLC she needed.  A pleasant chap from the Facebook Lexus group was in contact with me from the start and when I mentioned when it was due to go sooner rather than later, he drove down down about 260 miles the following day (in a pimp old school LS400 I might add) and bought my ISF for £200 more than Honda offered me in part-ex which I didn't mind as genuinely wanted it to go to an Lexus fan (he has an SC430 as well).

So...  Cutting a long story short...

Few I like about the FK8

1 - Looks - I know they are subjective but I really like the look of it and always find myself looking at it when it's near

2 - Reaction - Good or bad, it turns heads.

3 - Handling - For a car that is the same size as the ISF (I think it's 5 cm shorter but wider than the ISF) it's a lot lighter and changes direction superbly.  The diff is a masterpiece and I know it's a bit of a cliche but it feels more like a 4wd car than a Fwd car with the amount of grip it manages along with how it gets the power down.  The adaptive dampers are great as well, comfort for when the wife and kids are in.  Sport day to day.  R for a track day

4 - Braking - The ISF brakes are great...  the FK8 brakes are another level.  I have also got the floating discs from the 2020 model to go on it before the annual Ring trip next month

5 - Tech - It's got all the gadgets being a GT.  The head unit gets some bad press but using Android Auto it is fine - Spotify and Waze on main screen plus Google Assist works a treat 🙂

6 - Performance - Once moving....  it pulls and pulls and pulls.  Not as quick off the line as the ISF but once moving, it is very rapid

7- Seats - They are great and the driving position is perfect.  One thing I didn't like in the ISF were the seats.  They weren't racy enough for me compared to an M3, RS4 or C63 that it was competing with.

8 - Running Costs - Tax is £150 a year compared with £580 or so, Insurance for me is £200 a year (ISF was 290) and obvious one is MPG (25+ around town and 40+ on motorway)

9 - The rear seats fold down so managed to blag it as being practical with the wife

10 - Best until last...  The Gearbox...  It's obviously a manual but it is a joy to use.

Things I dislike about the FK8

1 - Noise (or lack of).  The turbo spool and dump valve noise is quite cool but nothing compared to a V8.  Exhaust note is non existent which is disappointing as there are plenty of cool sounding 4 pots out there (i30N, RS Megane, Golf TCR and so on).  Exhaust on the shopping list.

2 - Niggles - Luckily under manufacturers warranty but she is going back in soon due to a few faults (all rain related).  The auto wipers don't work, when it rains heavily the collision warning sensors can go off and I noticed condensation in one of the side lights by the front.  1st 2 issues are common faults.  She was probably built the day they announced Swindon closing

3 - Interior (seats aside) - Not as plush as the Lexus in terms of materials and feels a bit more fragile than my ISF did.  Also not sure I am a fan of the digital dash yet compared to some good old dials .  Only one cup holder as well....  I am starting to sound old 🙂

4 - Wheels - 20 inch wheels look cool, but you have to avoid potholes like the plague for risk of cracking a rim.  May have to invest in some smaller wheels in future

5 - Engine - It looks like a lawnmower (as in the actual engine).  Did I mention lack of noise?  It sounds like one as well

    Regrets

1 - Probably let the ISF go for too little money bearing in mind the price they are on AT but still got a fair amount more than WBAC

2 - I wasn't as bowled over on day 1 with the Civic as I was with the ISF but that was probably due to relief from getting away from the BMW.  This was cleared up at Thruxton though where the Civic came into it's own 🙂

3 - The RCF - My buddy with an ISF keeps sending me links to RCF's which are now in budget....  I can't return yet surely 😉

Anyhow...  it has been an absolute pleasure owning an ISF.  I would buy another one in a heartbeat.  In fact, a late one is on my list along with the RCF and GSF as things to replace the Type R with 😉

    Thanks buddy.

I had someone contact me from the Lexus Facebook group about it when I 1st mentioned it was going.

Honda brought forward the date the Type R was available so dropped the price to just above the part ex value as I didn't want it to end up on a forecourt for about 3/4k more than I part ex'd her for.

I pick the Type R up at 10am tomorrow 🙂

Dodgy front tyre angle picture was to negotiate new tyres with salesman.  They are replacing all four for tomorrow 🙂

As much as that car is a beast, I just fancy something newer, cheaper to run and a bit different to what I have had for 4 years.  2nd longest period I have owned a car.  The longest, ironically, was my 1st DC2 Integra Type R.

All subject to test drive....  So may be stuck for a while yet but I am hoping a 2018, 1 owner with 11k on clock isn't a dog.

They sound terrible though (as does most things other than a V8+) so exhaust will be needed...  Saw this film about overnight parts from Japan...  May have to do that 😉

    You lot 😉

Nah, returning to my Honda roots and going for the FK8 Civic Type R (you know...  The one that looks like a Halfords advert).

Its subject to me test driving the Civic as I had a social distance viewing at my house today when Honda brought the Type R around mine.  I was allowed to get in it, just not drive it as officially they aren't open for sales yet 😉
