Its called Bikeability now. 3.5 million children and families have undertaken these courses apparently and a further £18 million was granted for further training last April. Likewise I remember doing the cycling proficiency test, I think we got a badge at the end of it but I was let loose long before that, as we all were back then. Raleigh chopper being the weapon of choice

Ha ha! Me too. A purple mark 2. Loved it to bits

  2. My mum and dad wouldn’t allow me out on the road on my  cycle until I’d passed the cycling proficiency test. They always mandated I couldn’t possibly know how to behave on roads without passing this. Pretty sure that I had to read aspects of the highway code too as part of the test, or perhaps it was a cut down version. Long time ago but I do remember having a good grasp of positioning, signalling and how road junctions work. All of my younger siblings went through the same thing too.

Nowadays we have none of this and we are careering towards an endgame where vulnerable road users can never be at fault and they never have to worry about what is safe and what is not safe. I’m really not sure how that can be safer.

  3. Just wondered why the new 2nd generation NX (NX350H and NX450H) isn’t in a separate forum of its own?

The majority of posts in this forum now seem to be related to the new model so it would make sense. Also, all other areas of the forum differentiate between the different generations of a model.

Doesn’t affect me because I’ve sold my NX but I would find it irritating having to wade through many threads about waiting times, specs, delivery times, etc, for the new NX.

Certainly is an age thing! In my day, you either went to private (or Public) school or the local Grammar school with exam selection - the ‘12 Plus’ (as was - later became the 11 Plus) in order to align with Common Entrance and studied the arts, classics and humanities with associated University degree afterwards, or you failed the 12 Plus exam and went to the Secondary Modern school to prepare for an apprenticeship after school (at 14/15/16 depending on the exact era). Believe maths and science were only really a focus at (what I think were called) Technical Colleges.

There were also Polytechnics for more ‘practical’ degrees.

The belief that ‘almost everybody should go to University’ is, in my opinion, one of the great mistakes of the last thirty years…

Totally agree with this and especially so your last statement. It created a sense of entitlement and worth that society and the workplace was never ever going to be able to satisfy.

Thanks for your suggestions. As has been said, no panic to get it sorted so I shall wait until the holidays are well over and consult with my dealer. Reviews of the Car Pro stuff look good but I am concerned about any surface treatment on the glass.

So you are concerned about replacing the windscreen and concerned about polishing it out. Rock and a hard place I think.

As far as I can tell, your risk of catching COVID is directly connected to your political opinions.

Right of centre = Government restrictions are going too far (it’s a police state etc); Omicrom is mild, I know because I saw it in The Sun. I’ll be fine regardless, this is all scaremongering. See Daily Express, Daily Telegraph.

Left of centre =  Government restrictions aren’t going far enough, we should all be locked down forever; Social gatherings for people who were already working together anyway are the end of civilisation as we know it. Everybody is going to end up catching COVID and will be in hospital or dead, and it’s all Boris Johnson’s fault. See The Guardian, Daily Mirror.

Centre = Totally confused, as I keep hearing and reading different things depending on whether I read or listen to the left or right-wing media!

Looney = global conspiracy, it’s all a myth, I’m not getting vaccinated etc. I get all my information from Facebook from a bloke who clearly knows what’s going on…Hang on, I’ve just developed this really odd cough…

    Brilliant Ed, simply brilliant 😀

I was behind someone the other night without their lights on and doing around 25 in a 40. I of course gave repeated flashes to try to alert the buffoon that they had no lights on but to no avail. Given the speed and lack of concentration, I did wonder whether Katie Price had borrowed a friend's Fiesta to get home from the pub.

If said Fiesta was upside down then yes it probably was Katie Price!

Well, my first post on this particular board and here goes! Today, I'll be moaning about:

Cars driving during darkness with the rear lights switched off. There are many around here. I can't believe that people are so stupid that they don't realise this, so my blame theory is that these drivers are just too thick / lazy to check if the side lights are on at least, or they think that 'if the front drl's are on, then the rear tail lights must be on', or like my car when the engine is started, the instrument lights come on, so seeing this they assume that the external lights magically come on at the same time.

Now if the latter is the case, then the manufacturer has a responsibility and duty of care to include some sort of warning to alert the driver that the lights are in fact off, during darkness.

Maybe these numpties are also completely unaware that their car also has an Auto lights setting. I'd go step further and guess that these are the same drivers who hate cars and hate driving.

    Rant over. Discuss.

(I'm a nice person really and I shouldn't allow such things to wind me up.) 😉

A perfectly valid moan in my opinion. Well done!

  9. Will we see Lewis Hamilton in an F1 car again? I’m beginning to think we may not, at least in terms of racing again in F1. I hope not but I’m sure he isn’t feeling good about this. I can’t imagine what it is like to go through the whole season giving absolutely everything you’ve got and then have it taken away from you at the end of the very last race by an incorrect and unprecedented application of the safety car rules.

That the FIA releases a statement saying that many people have a misunderstanding about the last race ending is beyond a joke and shows the contempt they have for competitors, teams and fans alike.

Of course Max is a worthy world champion in terms of the way that he drove all year and really took the fight to Lewis and Mercedes. He should not be world champion though because he was soundly beaten in the last race and it took a bizarre decision by the race director to gift him with the win. The last sequence of races, when it really mattered at the end of the season, were fantastic races by Lewis and Max could not compete with this.

Will Lewis Hamilton be back next year though. I try to put myself in his shoes and think what I would do in the same situation. He might well feel that he has nothing else to prove and it is time to move on.
