  1. So glad your pleased with your IS220D. Sounds a good one an such low mileage.

    I loved the build quality. lots of airbags and even knee airbags in my 06 SE. The build quality was great.

    Mine was serviced by Lexus for 4 years and then independent garage with every service and MOT paperwork for every year of it's life, with a faultless MOT history with no advisories, (BP06GKY) so bought it at around 178,000 miles for £1,483.00 on eBay. Drove well on collection and got 18 months out of it until the head gasket went at 187,000 miles.

    Like you hated the turbo lag and gearing.  It looked lovely in burgundy. Photo of when I sold it for scrap on eBay for £350.  I had replaced the tyres with Avon 7V7's 1-2 months prior and got the AC fixed with a new condenser. Also cut out boot tray to fit full size spare alloy.

    Yours being low mileage should last well.

  2. 2006 Lexus IS 220D my worst car. £1475.00 

    If your actually giving it to him, free I wouldn't do anything to the car. If selling I would advise him not to buy if you value your friendship, should it go bang after he bought it.

    Trade it in for a used Prius! Job done. No comeback for you and still have a friend.

    After 18 months head gasket went. Scrap at 187,000 miles. Fixed the AC, with new AC condenser, Spare alloy, New tyres all round. Photo the day of collection for scrap. Got £350

  3. I bought some new Goodyear Ultragrip 9 winter tyres around a year before the last Beast from the East 2018? Bought them for my 1996 Volvo 940 automatic petrol.

    I purchased a used set of alloys from a 940 for £45 and had the goodyears fitted.

    My Summer tyres are Michelin energy savers and the slightest incline the rear wheels were spinning.

    The Winter tyres are simply amazing. Found the steepest hills in the beast from east and could stop and steer as well as pull away. Slight slip, then could feel tyres biting into the snow and off you go. No traction control on a 940 only ABS, no snow mode on auto gearbox.

    Still have 2 with 5mm of tread and replaced one that was worn on edge and one punctured on a sidewall so bought last old stock matching one and a good used one with 6.8mm of tread. The 5mm tread tyres are still in good condition as no cracks or perishing.

  4. Only had Avon 7V7's for a few months on a 2006 Lexus IS220D before I scrapped it with HG failure.

    Seemed ok and were cheapish as I remember 205/55/r16 if I remember correctly. Got a bit twitchy when I did a right and then a left at a double roundabout. Was driving a little bit too fast from the lights with a BMW behind. Felt the rear twitch and then felt the traction control kick in. 

    Current Auris hybrid fitted goodyear efficient grip performance 2. A nice tyre, replaced worn/perished Continental eco contact which were 5 years old and done 26k. 

    Volvo 940 use Michelin energy savers. 2 bought used, used as a spare tyre. £20 and £25 each off eBay 5 years ago and fronts bought new around 3 years ago. Never any issues. Used Michelins on my Volvo for 15 years.

    For the last 5 Winters use goodyear ultra grip 9's. Fantastic winter tyre. Sadly recently had one punctured on the sidewall/curve. Scrap and bought last new old stock one to replace. Discontinued, now 9 +

    Hopefully get a bit longer out of them and swap to the 9+

    Nor me. I had my 1996 940, petrol MOT recently, and before they did it had them underseal the underside as well as welded a 3inch by 2-inch patch behind the OSR jacking point. My workhorse, now on 207,000.

    The Lexus is probably at the age, that a good wire brushing, rust converter and underseal and would be good for years to come. So long as no holes.

    Yes, not a fast car, at 11 seconds 0-60mph, but no turbo lag on my stock 1996 petrol AW70/71 Auto with 2.3 litre B230FK low pressure turbo and still drives well with 207,000miles. A good engine match to the gearbox. Economy is not it's strong point either. Around 25mpg average. maybe a bit more on a long run.

  7. Remember going on holiday in around 2002 looking at property in Normandy, France in my 1986 Volvo 740 estate. While over there the downpipe decided to snap off to the front silencer and sounded like a motorbike! I enquired at a local garage and it was something crazy like 400euro! The car cost not much more. I wired it together as best as possible until could drive home and get it fixed.

    I had to stop for a school crossing in Villedieu Les Poeles which the local gendarmerie on motorbikes were helping. I tried to drive as gently as possible but still loud and popping but they never pulled me over.

    Got back to the UK and bought a Bosal Downpipe for £25 and around same for fitting.

    As yours is gone on rear should be fine, just open windows if smell fumes.

  8. My 2006 220D was the same. Either turbo lag then finally off. HG went at 187,000 miles so scrapped and got £350 from totally honest add on eBay. Was having parts off it, rest scrapped. A shame really as body/interior OK. Engine/gearbox combo not good.

    You do get used to it though. Good luck with it.

    Best cheap cars have been Volvo. A 740, 240 and current 1996 940. All auto and petrol.

    Have a 2015 Auris Hybrid TS (estate) and that's good and reliable/ cheap to run if a little dull to drive.

FunnyFact, when Volvo was designing their first SUV, the XC90 mainly targetted at the US market they analyised typical SUV accidents in the states and the first thing they found was that after driving for miles and miles on a straight road the first corner arrives, the driver misjudges the speed goes in too fast and the SUV rolls over. Thats when they decided the roof is just as important as the crash zones!

    Glad you were in a Volvo. Yes, exceptionally strong and not just built to pass Euro NCAP Tests. Their safety centre is amazing and their research into accidents is very good. XC90 no one has died in one. As you say, different grades of steel in critical areas. Relatives have a XC60 and V90 and likes Volvo. I like Volvo too but only had a 340, 240, 740 and currently have a 1996 940. The older models were safe in their day but Volvo safety and other manufacturers have moved on massively in the last 30 years. Couldn't afford a newer Volvo and went Toyota for reliability. Like my 940 for reliability and ease of maintenance.

  10. IS250 auto all day long.

    I should of bought an IS250 over a 220D. Lasted 18 months and HG went at 187,000 miles. I liked the build quality and all airbags, basic SE kit, colour. Not the economy, late 20's early 30's, turbo lag, mismatched gearbox.  Like my 1996 petrol Volvo 940 auto estate on 206,000 miles.

    Have a Auris Hybrid estate which is good and £0 road tax as pre April 2017.

    I class the IS 220D as a smallish car as shortly after passing my test went from a hatchback to Volvo 740, 240 and 940 estates.

    Sounds good. Relatives love their D5. Used to do 40,000 miles a year in some of his Volvo's drumming up business for his manufacturing company and 35 employees. Not sure on the engine on the V90 estate but suspect diesel. Started in 1999 with his first Volvo a V70. Loved it and had it 10-15 years.

    I'd love a new Volvo V90 but can't afford one and do not see them as reliable as a Toyota/Lexus. My relative runs his own manufacturing company so can keep a car 2-3 years and lease another. Thus under manufacturers warranty. I do like the old models and provide reliable transport that is easy to work on . 

    XC90 no one has died in one. Volvo invented the 3 point seatbelt and didn't patent the design as felt morally wrong to do so.
