In terms of Lexus staying in the the UK market I think the biggest threat is the EV fine. They need to sell over 22% of the total sales as pure EV’s.
As The RZ is a dismal failure and the sales of the UX haven’t taken off then Lexus will be heavily fined or have to buy credits from the Chinese manufacturers or Tesla as they will have a massive surplus as they import only EV’s or only a small number of ICE’s.
The Lexus announcement of 2023 trumpeted the proportion of electrified sales but didn’t carve out the pure EV’s - I reckon they represented less than 10% of total sales. So if they achieve the same figures as last year they will have to pay 12% x 16,000 x £15k = £ 28.8m.

There is also a complicated way, in the first couple of years of these mandatory ZEV rules, to earn credits based on your average co2 emissions being lower than a few years ago. Lexus are in a good position for this as PHEVs will help bring that average Lexus emissions figure for sales down significantly (as PHEV is generally 25-30g/km) - and those PHEV are approx 50% of new NX and RX sales.

The UK market had approx 16.5% of BEV sales last year. Lexus aren’t alone in this issue, but yes, don’t have great EV model options.

You'd like to think this might shame Lexus into action, but being realistic, it does seem they sell very few cars here in the UK. I only have figures for 2022 when they sold a mere, 9034 cars. Is this a sustainable market share, or could they afford to bow out gracefully? If the former then surely Lexus would want to do all it can to inspire confidence in their product, if the latter could we see Lexus disappear from the UK. Frankly, I suspect the former scenario, but let's see what Lexus has to say for itself later today.

2023 was a record for Lexus in the UK with 15,963 cars sold. I believe they also had a global sales record too.

Toyota cars are also affected by theft issues, albeit less desirable, so you’d hope/think they have the UK (nevermind global) volume to justify a proper fix.

How does the 5th generation RX differ to the 4th, in terms of security?

My 4th generation was stolen last year and I replaced it with another 4th. On this latest one I have had fitted a ghost immobiliser, canbus plate and use a Milenco steering wheel lock - am I still screwed?

Yes. The 5th generation RX has a signed/encrypted communication for the key and start. It’s called “Toyota Security Key” and all their newly updated/introduced models have a version of this, which means they aren’t vulnerable to the issue with the 4th gen RX, older NX, and current ES models (amongst others!).

A firmware update is highly unlikely because the system as a whole, and the multiple ECUs involved, aren't designed for signed communication and would likely require hardware replacements, not just software. Going full encryption will never happen on these old models - Toyota/Lexus isn't even using that on current models).

Jaguar Land Rover managed it on older models going back to 2016 that had similar flaws. Experts have also said encryption for the key elects here (doors /engine start) wouldn’t add significant overhead. Toyota are the world’s largest car manufacturer - they absolutely could fix this if they chose to.

The problem is not capitalism itself but how unfairly its being applied. If the government says motor insurance is compulsory it must make provisions to ensure even lower income groups are able to afford at least some basic level of cover. E.g. education is compulsory but everyone gets to go to a local  school for free and if they have the money they're free to opt for private schools.

Educating your children is mandated by law. Owning a car is not, and therefore insurance isn’t mandatory and shouldn’t be state provided.

The problem is we’ve been too generous bailing out those making unwise life choices (e.g. those on benefits see a financial increase if they have more kids, courtesy of other taxpayers; whereas those earning & paying their way typically see a big decrease in their household finances if they have more children) that it’s now become expected that the government will solve all problems. Any sense of personal responsibility is sadly gone.

I fear too many people aren’t aware of how bad nationalised companies were. I suspect we all may have a refresher course in the next few years.

Lexus likes to have its cake and eat it with leather options. It costs £ 1,900 to take a Premium Plus grade from Tahara plastic to Semi-Aniline leather, but you get £ 0 back if you downgrade a Takumi grade from Semi-Aniline leather to Tahara plastic.

I really feel for our vegan neighbours and the hardships they must endure!

  6. I would try to get a MY24 car if you can, those are roughly registered late March 2023 onwards.

an easy way to tell - the glove box colour matches the interior trim (only helpful on non-black options!), e.g. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202309282440388?sort=price-asc&advertising-location=at_cars&make=Lexus&model=NX&postcode=SP102RH&year-from=2023&fromsra

or another way to tell is it has “nano-e” as a climate option.

MY24 has new UWB keys - that aren’t vulnerable to people trying to scan and amplify your key signal to remotely unlock your car and start it, so you can dispense with the Faraday pouch etc.

When I was looking, in the higher trims (Prem Plus, F Sport, Takumi) a 450h+ was often cheaper or same price as the 350h. No idea what the market is like now several months later, but, worth looking at. The 6 seconds 0-60 is very nice on the 450, and I have now gotten very used to driving around everywhere locally on EV power alone!

In view of the comments from Jimmyfromlargs listing yesterday about a more sensible quote from NFU I decided today to revisit the Compare the Market site to see if any other insurance companies had joined the site as yet.

Just to flag, you won’t find NFU on comparison sites - you’ll need to phone them. But lovely quick and efficient service.

I’ve since tried some online comparison sites and as yet the only company giving a quote appears to be “insure the box” (need to fit a telematic box) quoting £2679.19.  I normally pay around £400 and was expecting no significant increase with LBX.

I have just tried 'Insure the Box' and I couldn't get a quote for an LBX Original Edition.

John noted his quote came via a comparison site.

Interesting that John quoted "Insure the Box" who were able to quote.  Never heard of this company so must be new.   How come they can quote when no one else can I wonder. Making a claim with a company that has no track record can be very scary.   Their mandatory Telemetic Box is a known technology but monitoring your every move while driving can significantly affect a renewal quote as the Company can analyse your use 24/7  365 days a year.    It can determine not only exceeding speed limits but accelerations rates, severity of braking force, how long you drive in EV mode, normally a great indicator of sensible and careful driving, time of day the car is in use 24 hours a day.

Insure the Box have been around a while, at least since 2020.

interestingly, their policies are also underwritten by Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance UK Ltd, the same company Toyota are a large shareholder in. Which given the connection to Lexus & Toyota insurance that they also underwrite, perhaps explains why they have the car in their lists already.

Hello - I recently bought a new NX350h which has a boot liner. I have a spare (in good condition with small scuffs) from my previous NX350h (2015) and wondered if anyone wanted to buy the spare for £10 - but it's collection only from a Gateshead or or Morpeth address. Thanks.

If it’s from a 2015 model, that won’t be a 350h - likely a 300h - and so you may want to amend your post and thread title so people with the right car see it?

  11. NFU Mutual may be worth a call - they still have their own underwriters and very friendly whenever I’ve called.

otherwise, you may want to run a quote for a similar insurance group car. My NX is also extortionate to insure in London -  but an equivalent Audi PHEV was almost identical in price. I know you have the canbus issue in your RX, but, with less NCB and a theft claim, I suspect your quotes for other similar cars may be similarly expensive…
