Hi. I can definitedly use some help. I'll run you through the facts.

One evening, I overfilled my gas tank. Gas stream out of the tank when I came out of the station. Drove the car home, highway, no issues. The overfilling of the tank may not be related to my problem, but I wanted to state the facts.

Next day, car starts to "chug" - lack of consistent acceleration. It almost seemed like either bad gas or plugged fuel filter. I added dry gas, fuel octane and tried to drive the potential bad gas (if that's what is was) out of the car. I changed the fuel filter. Car still chugs. In fact, there is now a complete lack of any acceleration from a stop light. I will not pull out into traffic. Seems to idle fine, not chugging quite as much, but no acceleration.

I'll take any help anyone can offer. A friend thought maybe the overfilling may have damaged or filled a charcoal canister? on the return fuel line.

Happy New Year. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

This is just a wild guess but I do not believe the return line is clogged as fuel injected engines do always return a large amount of fuel back to the tank. If the line was clogged you had way too much fuel delivered and pressure would rise to such levels the ECU would cut off.

Two possible reasons: First you got bad gas or it was contaminated. A "clasic" is still doping the tank with sugar. But it may also be that deposits of the underground tank got into the car. Almost all cars I ever took apart had a coarse screen in the tank to retain those particles. This screen may be clogged. Had it once on a Land Rover and had to take out the pickup line and sender.

The second reason is that your tank builds up vacuum. This is normal to some degree. But if the vacuum rises too much your pump can't suck any more fuel and just stalls. This can easily be checked by removing the filler cup or just loosening it some turns. If it's a vacuum building up it takes quite some time to develop so you might need to drive for an hour to check this..

But I guess it's a fuel delivery problem. In that case best you look out for a specialist.
