Roof Bars For Gs300 Series 1

I have bought some second hand roof bars for a gs300 series 1. Does any one know if there should be something protecting the roof ie a piece of rubber or should teh roof bars be fitted directly onto the roof of the car???

The mount that fits to the roof should come with a strip of rubber that protects the paintwork.
