I thought that the RDS-TMC system worked off an independent tuner that picked up a signal from classic FM.

Mine will only declare that it is receiving a signal when the radio is turned on (even if the radio is not tuned to Classic FM (as it wouldn't be!)).

So the question is simply does the radio have to be turned on to get the RDs-TMC system to work. Handbook is silent on this as far as I can see. Many thanks to those who know the answer.

Not necessarily Classic FM... It's "sort of" an independent tuner, but it's still part of the stereo system. however the system can be set to the "genre" of station to receive the traffic information via RDS-TMC (i.e. doesn't have to be classic, could be jimmi hendrix for all it knows - it's just looking for a TMC data stream, and several stations transmit them, not just classic FM).. there's a setting for it in the menus.

That's normal.. radio needs to be on to receive the RDS-TMC data for obvious reasons.

If you use the "TA" function of the stereo system, it uses the same independent receiver to scan for traffic broadcasts and switches to that when a traffic announcement is active.

So the question is simply does the radio have to be turned on to get the RDs-TMC system to work.

Yes :)
