  1. I think the Lexus display does sometimes . . . . As of this morning I have done 9086 miles in mine and put in 303.78 gallons giving 29.9 m.p.g Would anyone else like to quote some actual total figures?
  2. Be wary of some of the mileage figures published on this site. Some are based upon the display in the car and in my experience it tends to be optimistic. Yesterday I drove from Manchester to Ampthill, filling up just before the journey. I did the whole journey with cruise control set at 70 m.p.h and the tank average showing on the display at the end of the journey was 37.3 m.p.g. On some quiet motorway journeys, the tank average displayed has exceeded 40 m.p.g. But, but, but: the overall consumption figure calculated on the basis of every mile done and every gallon put into the tank since new, i.e. not depending upon the display, is as below. This is for an IS 250 SE-L auto and I think is pretty typical.
  3. I think most of us just don't get enough practice at driving in slippery conditions. It is amazing how skills develop when they are exercised. I remember one really bad winter in the 60's (see here http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pres...ter1962-63.html ) when I was forced to drive long distances over a period of weeks with persistent icy roads and with regular snow. I was driving a Ford Consul with sloppy worm and peg steering and a three speed gearbox with syncromesh only on second and third - the gear change was on the steering column. It is difficult to imagine a worse car to drive in those conditions and yet, by the end of the period I was achieving point to point times that were virtually the same as those I normally achieved in good conditions.
  4. Re-set what? I don't know the IS200 at all, but my IS 250 SE-L shows (by cycling through the display) :- Overall average - i.e. the overall average for all the miles and all the petrol purchased since new. Tank average - i.e. the average consumption since the tank was last topped up. Instantaneous consumption - i.e. the notional consumption resulting from the way the vehicle is being driven at the moment that the display is read. None of these readings require anything to be re-set, but the Overall Average can be re-set if you wish. I wouldn't see much point in doing this unless I made some significant change to the vehicle and wanted to compare the long term figures before and after. If I were to re-set it every time I put in petrol, I would expect it to have the effect of making the overall average and the tank average the same. Incidentally, careful manual checks show that all the display figures (in my car) are a bit optimistic. For example, the overall average on the display is 31.3 m.p.g - the real figure is as shown below.
  5. I'll be surprised if it isn't a bit wider than that . . . . . . . :)
