  1. Reminds me of a kinda funny story...a friend of mine was in the USA recently and hired a town car...he fills it at at self service station and then an attendant asks him in a drowl american accent "Sir..does that car take Diesel?"..."no"...he says..."well it does now " says the attendant...its cost him about $400!!!!
  2. Battery, which is relatively new, shouldnt be knackered. Dont take car back until you have a definitive answer.
  3. Do you know if/where they can be bought online...Im a few caps short of a full set myself!!!
  4. When you take out motor insurance cover, you are normally asked if any modifications have been carried out to the car. Installation of a tuning box is a modification which, regardless of the fact that it has been installed after the commencement of the policy, is a modification which must be disclosed to insurers. You are afterall driving a car which you will have advised insurers is 177bhp, but is in essence circa 220bhp. If you fail to disclose this and you have or are involved in an accident, insurers may decline to indemnify you on the basis of non disclosure. Likewise, if a tuning box is added during the course of the warranty, then any damage which normally would be covered under the warranty, may not be. Apart from that, these boxes on the feedback to date do sound good. I would just be slightly concerned that they may shorten the engine life by causing unknown damage. Certainly, i would like more feedback before taking the plunge.
  5. I bought a 08 220d MM from a Lexus dealer in March 2009 with 17k miles on the clock. The car had been serviced at 10k miles and the dealers serviced it before i bought it. They told me it was due the next service at 27k miles or in March 2010, whichever comes first. The service interval according to them is 10k miles or every 12 months, which ever comes first. This, i was told was an important factor to be adhered to in order to maintain the warranty. According to what i was told, it would appear that your motor is due a service.
  6. Some friends have the BMW 520d, and it cant be faulted either on performance or consumption. It is much bigger than the IS220d and for that reason alone, it may suit your needs better. However, the BMW 5 series is due a model change in a few months, so you could find yourself very soon with an outdated model which will depreciate like a grand piano falling off the cliffs of Dover. As other posters said, the 5 series is not the comparative model to the IS220d. Also, not everybody complains of rattles and poor consumption. I for one am delighted with my 220d.
  7. There is a dimmer underneath the steering wheel on the right. Make sure it is not turned all the way clockwise (it clicks when it is at its maximum). That should fix it. This is the answer you are looking for (hopefully). I had the same issue with my sat nav. It does say this in the manual for the sat nav ( somewhere!!)
  8. I think he was actually kinda being complimentary about the car, in a back handed sort of way. I for one dont think that there is much wrong in wanting a comfortable reliable car. He suggests that we should think about an Alfa before we buy a lexus...what a load of dross. I have had the misfortune of having owned a Alfa 156. You name it, it went wrong...it was the worst car i have ever had..infact, with the exception of a few renault lagunas, it was the worst car anybody ever had. If jeremy clarkson thinks im boring in buying a Lexus before an Alfa, well then i will be boring for the rest of my life and i will highly recommend that everyone else that is buying a car be boring too.
  9. It may be idiot proof...but is it me proof? Thanks for that, it looks good, i may give it a go. $47 dollars shipping is a bit steep tho'
  10. I have just discovered a nasty stone chip to the bonnet. It is about 6/7mm diameter. The car is black (not metallic)When i got the car, i was given a little bottle of back paint and some lacquer. I think if i paint it in, i will have a smudge. If i leave it, i have a mark which if left untreated, may cause some further damage over time. If i paint it in and lacquer it, can the dealer do a neater job when i have it serviced or will that involve a bigger (more expensive) job. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
  11. Congratulations on the new car..its a real beauty. The twin exhausts on the 250 look great. I can identify with your enthusiasm, having just got an 08 is220d se MM a few weeks ago. In an ideal world, i would have gone for the 250 auto, but in Ireland, the car tax is so high, it is prohibitively expensive. The Diesel is not disappointing, but i would have liked an auto box. The stereo and sat nav are fantastic...still havnt fully learned to use it yet!!! Thanks for the warning on draing the battery..i have a habit of doing what you did, but thankfully havnt drained the battery. Happy motoring.
  12. I am the OP and i have further tested by theory. I drove 270 miles today and i averaged 50.4 MPH. Very few of the miles were in 6th gear. No AC and kept within speed limits. The tank average since my last fill (about 360 miles ago) is 45.7 MPG(there is quite a bit of city driving in that). The reality is with my car is that if i keep the revs down and use the cruise control (with uses the ECU to accelerate and throttle when you go up hills and hence is more economic) i can get a very decent MPG. What i would repeat is that it is far from the most enjoyable way to drive a car that is essentially a performance car. It does make for a stress free comfortable ride though. In response to the posters who are getting BMWs,Friends of mine have Beamers with 2 litre diesel engines which is a better engine than the Lexus/Toyota 2.2litre block and more frugal. However, my Lexus is miles more comfortable and luxurious than the BMW and a much better looking car. They are not nearly as common as the bavarian, which are everywhere and dont turn heads at all. Yes, i would accept that overall the BMW is probably a better car, but so far, i wouldn't swap my Lexus for any 3 or 5 series.
  13. Glad to see that it works for some of you guys. I do agree, it feels like i am being very reserved in keeping the revs down and to be honest, it is not the most exciting way of driving such a lovely car with tonnes of hp. However, what does please me to know that i have a choice and when some days i am not so concerned about the price of diesel...i can put the boot down and bang the revs up!!!!
  14. Got my 08 reg 220d se mm last friday. Scourced from a Lexus dealer. Pristine condition with 16.5k on the clock. I have driven a petrol car for years and this is my first diesel. I was horrified when i found on trips i was getting 35 MPG!! On the basis of what i had read on this forum, i guessed that i had a dud that was going to gulp diesel. However, i decided today that i would set the rev warning light for 2000 rpm and try not to exceed that.(on my last petrol car i was well used to 3000/4000 revs) I went on a 70 mile trip and spent about 20/25 mins crawling through traffic. Apart from that, i kept revs below 2000 and kept to legal speed limits. I was amazed and delighted to get 49.8 MPG. It would seem that the initial low MPG was down to my driving habits rather than to any issue with the car.Anyway, i am going to monitor and hopefully that is the case. If not, its back to the dealers who in fairness have said they will look at it if need be. In th emeantime, it appears if you keep the revs down, you will increase the MPG!!!
  15. Hello Everybody...i am picking up a 2008 Lexus 220d se next Friday. It is beautiful, 17000 miles, Multimedia pack etc. This is my first Lexus and im like an expectant father. The car is being bought from a Lexus dealer, it is "approved" and has 22 months of warranty left. The dealer will sevice it before i collect it. Is there anything else i should make sure they do? I have read something about a dodgy fifth something or another that can affect MPH.This concerns me slightly. Any advise would be very welcome. Thanks in advance!!
  16. Hello Everyone...I have just put a deposit on a Lexus 220d se and i am due to collect it on Friday. I am buying from an authorised Lexus dealer and this is an approved second hand car, first registered in Jan 2008. I went to see it on Saturday..it is a thing of beauty. The multimedia package blew me away. I also took it for a test drive and was very impressed. The garage have undertaken to have it serviced before delivery. Is there anything else i should make sure they do? I am a Lexus "virgin" and i have been reading on this site about fifth something modification, which apparently affects MPG and i am slightly concerned that if this hasnt been done i will have problems. The car has 22 months warrantly remaining. Any advise would be very welcome. Cheers!!
