  1. Car needs new rear Discs.  checking for possible on t'bay I find a set which appear to be solid rather than vented and so i check, are these correct for the Car?

Two possibilities are listed - one for  the car 2,997cc 161kw 219HP 2jz-ge

    and the other                                                    2,997cc 163kw 222HP 2jz-ge

Select the first and its states - yes they fit.   Select the second and it states NO  they don't fit.

Car is mnfd.  2000 but V5c is registered 1st Jan 2001.

So, I'm thinking what is the difference?  Can't be that one is a V6 and mine being a straight six? or Can it?  Does the V6 give just 3hp improvement?

Glance at wikipedia and you find mentioned HP as 225 for 2000 car.!!!

So, unsure if soild or vented? 307mm / 308mm or something else?  and checking Amayana they don't list Rotors for the VIN so can't get a reference number. Rock Auto don't quote reference numbers by the Rotors they sell and too expensive to import.

Any ideas, so I don't buy the wrong item?

Just a thought and it may not have any relevance but could the throttle butterfly valve have become detached/broken or jammed.  If you have witnessed the low compression factor in person then it will not be worth considering,  but Garages do like to maximise the oooh arrr thats going to be expensive shrug.

Also check the Throttle Cabling. How much did first Garage charge you to check the compression which I imagine, not knowing the V6 layout, would take some time to do?

Sorry if I'm barking up the wrong tree!

Hope you find the answer.  You must feel lucky if you didn't manage to join the Motorway.

  3. No Rich, I've never had a car before with OBD2 however I have had a Boxed Victor Tools OBD2 Diagnostic tool I picked up several years ago for a couple of quid.    Reading the technical blurb I'm probably not too confident about using it. Will leave it for the inspection on the 8th by my mechanic.  It may well be that the lights will come on when I turn a corner if sensor related.  Can't recall seeing them light up when driving, just when sat in a Car park.  Busy here at the Seaside so no plans to venture out, today.  Daresay the visitors have come from far and wide irrespective of rules.  Good to feel the fresh Sea Air and boost the old Vitamin "D"

I think they should both come on as you turn the ignition but extinguish as the car starts. Is that what you mean?

No, they came on, went off but then came on again and stayed on.

Funny thing, having just started the Car outside the House, they went off and stayed off.   Have seen on the tube how to do some giggerypokery with the Diagnostic port under the bonnet and a piece of wire., so..........

  5. Well, I'll tell you an interesting fact before I hopefully dispel any thought of the Car being cloned.

When I went thorugh the various paperwork last night that came with the Car, I found at the back a secion of a V5C which was V5C/3 and a part V5C/4.  The registrtion number showing is M873 HPC.  Nothing has been filled in and checking DVLA it was a Silver GS300 with c180k on the clock and not taxed since 2014 (I think).

Anyway, I have the original Warranty & Care Booklet showing the Car was delivered 2nd January 2001. There are various Lexus service stamps and the Car was once owned by a USAF Husband and Wife  International driving licnece also in the paperwork from 2018.

There are various booklets that came with the Car including an International Security Register Wallet. Unfortunately no details have been entered and I'd like to have found the Car key code and have no idea how to get this?  My keyfob is cracked and I'm messing with a few replacement fobs to see if I can transfer the blade etc.,

Car feels strange to drive despite my owning an LS400. A slight wobble sound disturbs me but may be something in the boot not anchored down. The front lower Ball joints get replaced on the 8th.

Car starts and lights go out, however the VSC light with "off" beneath it comes on as does VSC light next to it. Didn't notice this before when started in my drive.  Guess this will be another problem to sort.  Strange it does not stay on but maybe its the starting of the engine that dims them both?

Running from start at about 1300 and falls back to about 700 or 750 which is on the high side.

Going back to the issue. If someone pays by Direct Debit and fails to cancel their D/D then this may give the replies I got, especially if they fail to write asking for refund.

Not yet feeling great about this vehicle - but daresay it will come.

  6. DVLA not working as it should.  I have taxed the vehicle and used it for the first time since purchase.  Fact is, I got the V5c recently but despite this, the below is the process DVLA took me through whih I basically had to ignore each message.  Perhaps the seller has not applied for a refund?

Tax a Vehicle – today visited DVLA  01-04-2021

  7. No, I'm at the shrinking stage of life.  I was thinking of my '93 LS400 which has a lower roof line.  The GS I notice gives me more head space but I've yet to drive it so was still thinking of the LS400.

I'm 6.1.  Never had a problem with the various S Class Mercs I owned. Taller and Wider, but later model Lexus have since got it right.

The LS400 was made more for the Japanese adult I suspect, even though it was to be marketed in the USA. They may have designed it with the Lady of the House in mind?

Come 1st April the GS will be taxed - hoping its not an April fools day!

  8. I see that Malcolm. Yes it was a Silver Grey Mk 4 and its MOT looked very reassuring.  Sorry I didn't save it to favorites or take down the Reg number before looking it up.  Doh!

Was priced at £1975 or thereabouts from memory.

They are rare in this area and if I hadn't bought the GS300 I'd have certainly given it a look.  Wonder where it will turn up?  F/B somehow opens at West Begholt (Constalbe Country) for some reason?? Not my address area.

    It was at Frinton-on-Sea.

  9. V5c  arrived today - at last!  Seven former keepers last owner not named - suppose this is owing to DPA or GDPR?

Battery charged. May even get to drive it now, although still shown as taxed and DVLA "tax a vehicle" says wait for reminder.  No longer in a hurry as appointments to keep next week so will use the Corolla and not risk this Car, just yet. Hey ho!

Borbet wheels will go on sale at an exhorbitant price, now that they have been refurbished in Alabaster Cream and I have  new set of Borbet locking nuts.

  10. It's design was perhaps copied by Mercedes as it looks more modern even today than the LS430, however they seemed to go cheaper on the trims for the Japanese customer. Such a pity.  I had a conversation with someone in Oz who bought one and I think started a short thread "Crown Majesta" from memory as considered importing one back in the day. Will need a specialist Veneerer (?) to replace.  Tragic if the Celsior was also cut price when it came to trim.

  11. Tried "chat" with DVLA and reply to my enquiry. No explanation why the V5C/2 green slip reference number is stated to be "not valid". Genuine part, as watermarked and tore off myself. . They've just ruled out being able to register with V5C/2

"Can take up to 8 weeks to process, we will need to allow more time. To tax i would advise to call us with the VIN/CHASSIS number of the vehicle please.
    Contact Centre Vehicles Enquiry line - 0300 790 6802. The Contact Centre opening times: 8am - 8pm (Mon – Fri) 8am - 4pm (Sat)"

Not dealt with Battery issue so will give a few more days. New Yuasa in the Hall but under strict instructions not to do heavy lifting. Will charge old and get mechanic to install.  Difficult location for lifting, by bulkhead.  Still, won't be as heavy as the LS400 Yuasa.

...and I had more parking space!

There's a beautiful Crown Majesta on eBay but I can't for the life of me manage to get the link up!

You notice they don't show the Dashboard. One of the issues with the Crown Majesta was the wood veneer / plastic wood veneer (?) peeling or cracking under heat. Also the Dash board surround can crack.  Check out other examples on a japanese auction website. Otherwise, lovely to look at and great shape.

Had a conversation today (in real life!) with another LS owner about just this.

My MK3 power steering was a little hit and miss (occasionally very heavy at low speeds, only 60k miles)

If the replaced P/S pump did not have the Valve connecting the pipes to the ICV and Throttle conduit then you will (as I know on my '93 LS) find the steering is very heavy when stationary.   Need to rev slightly with left foot on brake to lighten  - annoying. I kept the part for the P/S pump but spliced the pipes to bung up the two input pipes. Mistake, as would put back if I had opportunity.  Won't concern me for a while !

  14. Guess this may not be possible on modern Cars but had something similar on my 1934 Riley. The Battery was in the boot and the cable ran into a Switch knob behind the Drivers seat.  As it was a push button start  it needed a hidden switch. A Boat switch with plastic key is an alternative to the metal one here used. Where to hide? thats the Q.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUhXLsrZiE0

When you follow the correct prompts you can put the 12 digit number in.

I did that, and repeat here what comes up after entering the 12 digit number

    Taxing a vehicle

    Unable to use service

Unfortunately you cannot use this service as the V5C/2 reference number you have used is invalid.

You should have received a V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) in your name for the vehicle, please use the reference number from this to renew your vehicle tax.

If you have not received the V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) for the vehicle, in your name, please complete form V62 - application for a vehicle registration certificate and send to DVLA Swansea. Click here to get V62

Suggest we call it a day until I fill out the V62. Thanks for your thoughts.
