  1. Thanks to all. Ouch! to £264 in comparison to US item price. Not yet heard back as to shipping cost. I've read that cars older then 1996 not covered by Tow bar rules or certainly may not have same criteria for MOT inspection. Hoping that US compact unit will be as it says, "30" minutes installation. I have a brand new Witter Tow Bar I bought for a Safrane seven years ago sitting in the garage (car long gone) and I suppose it could be converted to the US style without too much work. Prefer to buy ready made than have the hassle and then getting the Electrics seperately. Got a mechanic changing the brake pads on the car on Thursday so hoping to get a good view underneath as to the detachable bumper centre part. Give me a chance to also check out routing of LPG pipework.
  2. What mileage do you get on lpg? Did the previous owner replace the aircon screen with an LED display?
  3. I've not had a good look underneath but there seems to be a lower removable panel to the bumper? That photo looks more like the sort of tow bar I have on my Merc but I wouldn't ewant one that has a bar stretching forward to centre of the wheel space as I plan to put a Toroidal in there where the pipes exit.. MOT rules on Tow bars? Not even considered, so need bone up but if OK to use in the USA I cant imagine UK rules are more stringent. Don't plan on towing a Caravan only braked trailer.
  4. Waiting on the price for shipping and will let you know. Seems to have all the gubbins and a detachable which is nice. http://www.ebay.com/itm/400528314020?item=400528314020&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:X:AAQ:MOTORS:1123&vxp=mtr Does it look right to you?
  5. Seen a tow bar for this car but only on ebay USA. Anyone fited a tow bar to this model car? What I've seen is a very compact unit which basically is a plate attached to the back of the chassis. I'm only familiar with tow bars which have a main bar running backward to centre of spare wheel housing and cross bar which attach each side. Just checking if the US one is the same fitting for a UK Car.? Thanks
  6. Interesting - I've run a Merc S320 that has been on LPG since 2001 and never heard of a spark plug meltdown. I think it is recommended that a certain run hot plug is used. In six years I've not changed one and so can't recall exact plug name but pricey. Check LPG forum. Just purchased an LS400 and will most certainly convert to LPG but I'm not going for the complicated sequential as used to the old fashioned Single point closed loop system and its something I can possibly do partly myself. Don't know about your later model but there certainly isn't a lot of room to put a vaporiser under the bonnet. Where was yours situated, out of interest?
  7. Hello all, Couldn't resist the colour scheme of this mature Lexus LS400 now having its 21st Birthday. Had two Mercedes the same colour but been with black(ish) green W140 Merc the last six years and have finally got fed up looking at the rust problem. The Lexus looked immaculate and bought on chance that it would be OK. Trailered to me 200 miles. Only a bit of bubbling over driver wheelarch otherwise immaculate. Very nice. Love the sound of the V8 over my current S320. Had two V8 5 litre Mercs in the past. Great to be back to the sound. Looking at resolving issues. Possible leaking Header tank or loose fitting cap as fluid around top of unit. Brakes a little spongy from what I'm used to. No display in the Air con unit but working beautifully and can get replacement for $120 Stateside. Gald I've read that car has a non-intereference engine as no history on cambelt change.
  8. I'd be interested to know if you fixed the problem and what was the cause. Just bought a Lexus and footbrake travel surprised me as my Merc was much sooner to apply breaking. Getting new pads on shortly and will have system bled. Brake fluid perhaps a little lower than should have been but not much.
  9. I've just purchased my first Lexus LS400 basically because I'm sick of seeing the rust on my W140 S320 Merc. Thought its time for a change and although I had considered the W140CL I saw a nice Lexus and have just taken delivery of it. The advantage of the "barge" over the Lexus (which strangely seems quite small to me at the moment my W140 being a LWB ) is that the S class has LPG Single point which saves a bomb on Petrol costs on regular trips to middle France. Plan is to have the Lexus put on to LPG. The bodywork of this Lexus is stunning. Only a few bubbles over one wheelarch whereas the Merc is breaking out with rust all over the place. OK I do live by the Sea and the car is not garaged. I wanted to get back to a V8 as I had had two five litre V8 Mercs previously and although the Straight six is a great engine you don't get that burble or pull as on a V8. My first impressions of the Lexus is that it is quieter and smoother than the Merc though headroom made for the Japanese. The Merc has over 220k on the clock and the Lexus only half that so comparison not easy.. OK first Lexus niggles to be dealt with. The Air Con WORKS but the display is blank. Common problem and if car was a LHD would only cost me 50 Dollars to replace crystal display but on RHD will likely cost 140 Dollars. (ebay.com) I can live without it for the moment as the Air con is performing. Not the case on my Merc which would require an ovehaul. I think the Lexus has a possible hairline crack in the header tank. Been searching to see if this is a common problem. Fluid running round the top of the tank and not seemingly coming from the cap or nearby electrical cover. Scratching my head on this, but each time I wipe away the antifreeze it reappears next time I look after a drive. Worried about a pressure problem here. Time will tell which I prefer but as I'm booked on a Ferry with the Merc in two weeks time she will have to perform one last time before I sell it to someone who likes DIY on bodywork. The Merc is a great car and I've had it six years and its never let me down, but I'm looking forward to the change albeit that the dreaded Cambelt question may cost me a packet which it would not on the Merc as it has Cam chains. Have however just read that the early Lexus has a non-interference engine (as did my MR2) so maybe I can delay a huge expense without too much worry.
