Linas, you’re obviously bored to spew out reams of garbage in an attempt to convince us you must be right but you don’t know what you think you know about “rebadged” Toyotas.  A Lexus might share the same powertrain but that’s it.  I can’t take anybody serious who claims to hate a genre of vehicle.  Hating SUVs is like hating forks or telegraph poles.

Oh you've done it now! 🙂

(Removed an ill thought out statement!)

  2. Linas, I think calling these Lexus cars rebadged Toyota's is a little harsh.  Can't comment on this new LBX yet, but a significant proportion of the ES is Lexus specific and not based on a Toyota model.  Now, as a ex-GS owner, my belief is the ES is a downgrade, but I certainly think it is superior to a Camry.

As for the cost, it is the general trend of the whole motoring sector now, so not something Toyota specific.  Whether it is justified or not is another debate!  For example, the latest Gold Starts at £26.565 and goes up to £44,170!  A £44k Golf?!?

Lastly, as you know, I am not a fan of SUV's either, however, that is mainly down to their overall size rather than height.  In this respect, whilst I still prefer a standard saloon, the fact that the LBX is just taller but no bigger than the old CT makes it much more acceptable.  Having said that, I would still prefer an IS any day of the week.

    Hello Shapor

    Many thanks for your response.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the full screen prior to it changing to split screen.

Your comments are interesting, though, and I wonder if there is an up-grade available for my car based on the 2016 facelift which does seem to show the full screen I had. I am in the UK.

    Hi Michael,

As Colin says, the facelift was a different system and not compatible.

On that note though, I wonder if you had some sort of aftermarket modification applied to yours?  Not heard of one that can change the standard system, so it would potentially look different to the standard Lexus layout/graphics.

  4. You're right, I don't think it is a blockage.

For testing, I would suggest the resistance test I posted previously:

    image.png.3068862912109057b0b7094731cbacaa.png?utm_source=LexusOwnersClubUK&utm_medium=ForumLinks

Failing that, the wiring is certainly  a possibility but difficult to pinpoint.  An auto electrician would really be required at that point.

  5. To be honest, everything you have said points to it still being the 5th injector, so if it was me I would test one of them off the car to confirm it is working before fitting it.  I certainly wouldn't trust the cheap Chinese one until I knew it worked.

Other than that, if he can disable it without the ECU throwing up an error, then that is an option.  You would need to be careful with the DPF getting clogged but regular longer journeys or a trash up the motorway at higher RPM would help with this.

  6. Hi Ian,

When you say the mechanic disabled the 5th injector, how so?  I would assume the dash lit up like a Christmas tree when he did!

It is very odd that a replacement injector didn't fix the issue.  Did he verify that the injector was working outside of the car?

    Hi

i collected the car yesterday and what a joy it is , totally different to anything I’ve driven previously but I like it & am glad I didn’t purchase any of the German marques .

so quiet so serene so smooth so calm & a lovely place to be , did I say gorgeous interior lol .

I haven’t checked out the sport or sport+ settings as of yet apart from a little test to check it works but fantastic economy so far I think , steady 65-70 mph drive back for 120 miles returned 56 mpg or so it says on the gauge .
Truth be told I was getting tired with driving and started to dread long journeys but this Lexus may have made me fall back in love with driving , early days but I’m enjoying it so far .
Having driven diesels as a daily for many years I only regret not discovering this car earlier .

Thanks for all the help & advice I just can’t wait to finish work so I can have a play with the settings .

    cheers .

Where are the pictures so we can all appreciate the beauty? 🙂

  8. To be fair, I don't consider a post with The Register as its source to be a 'random Internet post' since it is a trustworthy site that has been around for a very long time.  And yes, I have been getting the daily emails from them for at least the last 16 years!

Having said that, everybody appears to have an agenda these days, so who knows what is actually happening out there?

I did wonder whether it was wise. Here's a different link saying pretty much the same thing https://www.electronicsweekly.com/news/business/bmw-punt-for-hydrogen-cars-2023-07/

As people will buy anything with a BMW, Audi or Mercedes logo on it, BMW investing in Hydrogen can only be a good thing for those of us better suited by non-electric modes of propulsion and it'll potentially stop lots of holes being dug in Cornwall.

Hopefully it will ok this time as certain disruptive elements of this forum have now been removed 😉

It is cause for some cautious optimism as you say, however, since BMW are hedging their bets and still making quite a few pure EV's, I am not sure how many direct sales this will contribute to from the standard German car buyer.  After all, the most important part of the car is obviously the badge! 🙂

Funnily enough, the article alludes to BMW playing catch up to Tesla, which is not something I ever thought I would see.

What we really need is some sort of hydrogen consortium of companies that can pool their resources together and create the product and the infrastructure at the same time.  A bit like what they do when they want to introduce a new standard technology for computers e.g. USB, PCI-E, etc...  Get 4 or 5 major car manufacturers together with some oil/energy companies, mix in the most basic government oversight, and hash out a proper plan.  Can't see it happening anytime soon though..

  10. The ride is adjustable though, so you can see it at a normal height in one of the photos:

    image.thumb.png.be019071d0b05dad056cb914dbe49c40.png

By all accounts, the air suspension it has fitted is quite soft and is configurable, so it isn't necessarily a bad thing to have it fitted.  It is just deemed unnecessary by most as there is nothing wrong with the standard setup.

Oh dear. What started out as an interesting thread has gone downhill and I can see it getting blocked.

I'm personally getting peed off with 'evangelists' who basically preach their self obsessed opinions which they believe is gospel truth. Unfortunately there are a few within this thread who do that.

Do they also try and add people to their ignore list for no good reason? 🙂

I do agree though in that I think this thread no longer serves any useful purpose, just like the last one that got locked!

Why we need to talk about clean or green hydrogen so much is hypocritical. It is coming, but not in a day or two.

Talk a bit about how clean or green the electricity in the grid is made. In Germany more than half electricity is made using coal, lignite and fossil fuel, and in UK it is not really green either.

Meaning that 100k lifetime of a battery car, that is made very polluting will be filled with a large percentage of unclean electricity. So, as it is today, and probably also tomorrow, battery powered cars will never become technology that is helping reducing pollution.

Those claiming otherwise are either not knowing what they talk about or plainly do not want to look at how much they are actually damaging the world they supposedly are trying to help buying the battery-powered cars. Meaning they are selfishly only getting as much out of governments subsidies as possible without caring the least about how much they are really damaging.

So it is ok to talk about environmental damage that is occurring now but not what might be coming in the near future? 🙄  The hypocrisy of the first sentence is almost beyond comical.

Interestingly, there is also an obvious attempt to deflect the conversation back to a topic that John is more comfortable discussing..

Lastly, I feel it is unfair to lay the blame for all the environmental impact of fossil fuels on EV's as it completely negates the fact that most of the power is used by households and businesses.  Do EV's contribute to the problem?  Of course they do, but then so do all powered modes of transport.

    Tesla?

I am not "hydrogen evangelists", but quite clearly there are no issues with hydrogen cars, the issues are with fuel supply and distribution, which by the way as well main issue with BEV. So I think Toyota could set it's own trend if they would build their own network or set long term partnership with one of big oil companies. Now sure - we still have issue when it comes to producing clean hydrogen, could Toyota build their own NPPs to focus on only making hydrogen, could they again partner with some companies in the field... I think they could.

Point I am trying to make - it seems like when it comes to unpractical and in places outright stupid BEV trend, like outright bans of alternative vehicles despite BEVs still having loads of issues, then people somehow finds explanation for them, but when it comes to hydrogen... suddenly it is not possible.

Probably a poor choice of words on my part.

You are right to point out Tesla, but I would consider that the exception rather than the rule.  Perhaps I should have said current car companies as Tesla started from scratch in their new direction, so they didn't have as much to lose.  I'm sure Toyota, as the largest car manufacturer in the world, would have a lot of pressure to maintain its sales position.

Whether that is EV or something else, at present they need to increase their EV offering in order to stay competitive.  The good thing about a company the size of Toyota is that they can still pursue other avenues like hydrogen whilst producing cars like EV's for the moment.  It is just that they aren't doing that, hence investors getting a little nervous.

Also, as far as the problems of both technologies, they are actually quite similar i.e. it is the infrastructure rather than the cars themselves.  The main difference is that EV's are here, right now whereas hydrogen is still a way off, if it happens at all.  I would also say that the opposite is also true of the acknowledging of issues in that the hurdles of producing and distributing hydrogen are often overlook as trivial and easily resolved.

  14. Despite what is reasonably being said

    18 hours ago, Steve_S said:

I find it very unlikely that green hydrogen will prove to be significantly cheaper in terms of cost per mile for fuelling a transport fleet than direct charging of BEVs. Water may be abundant as a source for green hydrogen but it is abundant for a reason. Hydrogen and Oxygen form strong bonds and it takes considerable energy to split them via electrolysis. Many easily accessible sources show that it would take more bulk energy generation capacity to fuel your fleet via green hydrogen than direct charging of an equivalent number of BEVs, not less.

Less well known is that fact that hydrogen released into the atmosphere can indirectly lead to elevated levels of methane which is a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. This may not be a showstopper but it is likely that the industry will need to improve its gas leakage standards above current levels otherwise the gain from using green hydrogen will be offset by this effect. This will add to the costs.

There may indeed be a useage case for green hydrogen in transport. Time will tell. But don't assume that fuel costs will be a factor. Meanwhile, Toyota are clearly hedging their bets.

    https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/toyota-market-next-gen-battery-evs-2026-built-by-new-ev-unit-2023-06-13/

Steve, despite the sense your post makes, you will find that some hydrogen evangelists on here will just go round and around in circles claiming the same things as if what you say doesn't exist or is idiotic.

In terms of Toyota, it seems their new CEO is facing somewhat of a battle and the investors might push the company into the pure EV direction.  Whilst I do applaud doing things differently - I actually ordered an Mazda RX-8 with the ****el engine back in the day - I don't think any car company can manage without following major industry trends, which sadly Toyota haven't been doing until now.

  15. I have this issue on my car.  If I use Android Auto at the same time as using the charging pad, my phone will overheat.

Not sure about the ES, but on my Kia someone told me that the air for the rear heating vents run below the pad and if I turned it to cold, the pad wouldn't heat up so much.  Haven't had a chance to try it yet but it is certainly plausible.

Oh dear Gang and Shahpor. I'm sorry to say this but the way I see it you have read John's posts with some kind weird spectacles. You've taken umbrage to his beliefs and concerns which yes have been quite heavily put. You've refused for what ever reason to ignore his findings and yes lots of copy paste articles and yes mostly 'anti' BEV.

I'm anti BEV because of the utter profiteering of the companies associated with traction battery manufacturer. The use of children to dig up by hand the 'precious' materials and with that the tragic loss of life of too many of those children. Profiteering has a lot to answer for.

Yes an electrically powered car is a great idea But alternatives to what's used now NEED to be developed and from what I've read here and there their is development taking place.

This thread I started and its about what's wrong with electric cars. It's turned out quite well with branched out topics. Hydrogen and Synthetic fuel which I believe will come to fruition quicker than the development of a traction battery made from 'friendly' materials.

John's taken to block your comments. That's his perogative.

I've taken no umbrage to any post he's done. I've appreciated quite a few of them.

There has unfortunately been a few misinformed posts and totally wrong. For example 'pollution' from tyres being worse from BEV's. Someone did however correct that and clearly differentiated between tread wear and particulates of rubber.

That's the great thing about forums. There are informative folk and misinformed folk within them. I love 'em all, even if I disagree with them.

But that's just it Vlad, it isn't the content per se, it is the manner by which they are provided.

Up until now I have chosen to keep my mouth shut despite not agreeing with some of what John has posted.

However, being called an idiot and responsible for the destruction of the planet because I own an electric car is what I objected to.

Also, I didn't resort to calling John names and yet, rather than debate the points I raised, he decided to just ignore me immediately.  Whilst that is indeed his prerogative, I do find it somewhat childish and closed minded.  Also, isn't the whole point of a forum to talk about different points of view?

The point I am trying to make is that the content itself isn't a problem, but it is the manner by which some members conduct themselves that I take objection to.  When did it become alright to just call anyone how doesn't agree with you idiots, morons, lacking intelligence?
