  1. Toyota has confirmed that the new Corolla will be built at the company’s UK plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, following £240m of fresh investment in the factory to get it ready for TNGA production. The car will go on sale early in 2019, and its starting price is likely to be similar to the current Auris at around £20,000.

Another reason to buy it if it’s built here.

  2. Quite similar to white goods in that regard... Toyota Corolla used to be compared to the fridges in the past (as "soulless", boring, but practical and reliable), now I thin Korean makers replaced that market... not sure if that is positive or negative.

Positive. Character in the sense of Alfa Romeo means breakdowns and warning lights.

I like my car to work.

Kia Stinger 3.3. That’s a car I’d want and will consider for my next car

  3. I think we look at ES as a substitution to GS and expect it to be as good to drive (hard to do with FWD though), as plush, as quite but the same time we expect it to be cheaper as we know that ES is cheaper brother to GS and we found out there is no much savings in price in between both models we got disappointed, when I say we I mostly mean I, sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone here.
We shall look at it as Lexus introducing a new model like UX etc, it is a shame the same time Lexus takes away GS but something tells me it will be back on the market 5-7 years from now on.
I saw ES in flesh and was not impressed, at all, it is not on a par with my GS and Camry (very well specced) which was 10k (euro) cheaper made better sense especially that they had the same drive train!
Someone above said when time comes to change cars he will be buying a 2018 GS and I might be doing just the same.
I will well ES on the market, I really do as I want Lexus to stay in UK.

They’ll have to if re launching the GS base it around a whole new platform or shorten the floor of the LS or LC. Or stretch the IS.

All Lexus cars will be transverse mount bar the LS as I bet Toyota won’t engineer another longitudinal platform. Which I think is a shame.

  4. If I couldn't have Lexus then top of my list would be Infiniti  (hybrid model only) followed by Volvo (not the ugly new ones) followed by Ford (I've had 6 and each were excellent )

Infiniti. Nissan/Renault and Mercedes. Very unreliable.

Surprised not many mentions of the Korean makes. I was passed by a Kia Optima this am - nice looking car and masses of warranty.

Hyundai and/or Kia. They might not be seen as fancy cars but they’re good and totally classless.

  5. Answer to all is - NO... and that is not opinion.

    but wether it matters is.

If you dont want leather, RTCA and BSM or a 450h or bothered by rwd the subjectively the ES is not inferior, and even if you do, other elements may make the ES, subjectively for an given individual, better. Your comparing these vehicles on paper only.

and GS cant be specced in 4wd anyway so ?

Abroad you can get GS with 4wd and with a wider range of engines namely the 4pot turbo, the 3.5 both with RWD and AWD.

The UK just isn’t an important enough market to get these superior GSs. We do get the F but no one buys them - which is a shame.

A longitudinal mounted RWD platform is intrinsically superior to a transverse mount FWD one so I do see the point made that hopefully it would have been cheaper than the outgoing GS or loaded up with equipment to make up for the fact it was based around an inferior transverse platform as opposed to a bespoke longitudinal one.

That said given its only been offered with a very tepid drivetrain the lack of rear or all drive won’t be an issue. It’s in no ways being marketed or promoted as a drivers car (which a GS kind of is) but hopefully it’ll be reliable (almost a given) quiet and comfortable. For 80% of buyers that may well be enough.

I’ll reserve final judgement until I see the car and drive one but think the Camry will do a very similar job for a lot less money and there’s an IS, LS or another GS shaped car in my future.

  6. So I'll pay £5 more for an ES Takumi than a GS Premier? So much for the much-vaunted price reduction to account for the inferior platform. What do I get for that? Cheap materials, worse economy and pointless rear reclining seats instead of a useful passenger-seat ottoman? Seriously? Who the hell wants them in a car this size - it ain't a chauffeur-driven barge like the LS! And multi-weather headlights? Really, Lexus? Really?
I bet it'll ride just as poorly as the GS on its stupid big wheels and have worse road noise as well, because they'll have cut the sound deadening to save costs.
I predict they'll sell about two of these. One of which I might just buy in three year's time once some poor fool's taken a serious haircut on it. But it'll have to be a bargain, and it'll have to have a HUD, which isn't clear yet from the specs.

I agree the platform is worse but

    1. It will be more spacious than the GS. The S90 is used by chauffeurs and exec hire drivers. This could be too so the recliner seat might not be a bad idea
    2. The GS rides well
    3. Doubt they’ll cut the sound deadening

  7. The standard ES (base grade) doesn't have leather, it has the Tahara upholstery. The premium pack, for the base grade only, adds leather plus other items.

I’m going to go against the grain here and say I’m not a huge fan of leather seats and would be more than happy with non leather. So long as they’re heated and cooled with at least 8 way adjustable and memory is real nice to have.

  8. "Pure petrol versions will also be available in ES 200 and ES 250 forms, but these are expected to make up a tiny proportion of sales in Britain, where Lexus customers tend to opt for its electrified models."
This is from a new Autocar article. Does this change anyone's opinion of the ES?

I’m interested in the pure petrol versions.

  9. Just a phone snap of my wheels parked up in the Ordesa Valley Monte Perido National park in Spain.

Everything that is right in life can be seen in this snap. Great scenery, great weather, good car and camera lurking [emoji6]

Needless to say the cars been great on the journey down via the Alps, Dordogne and French Pyrenees over the last week.

  10. I have colleague who got 2017 one... If you ask him ... he is very happy with the car... if you ask him again... he says it is very reliable... he said it has never broken down on him...  if you insist and ask him 5th time... then he actually says he had it left with dealers for 4 times already and they have almost replaced entire car - the dash with sat nav, front seats, front suspension... but he is still very happy with it and keeps saying how good are the dealer, because he had not paid a penny for all the work..............
Well obviously he didn't... he only covered 6000 miles in 16 months since he bought it. His definition of "never broken down" is ... "he never had to stop and wait for recovery", so he had faulty front air suspension, but it was only light on the dash.. front seats memory stopped working and would reset to the foremost forward position every time, sat nav stopped working and the leather sticking on the dash peeled away.... true - recover was unnecessary in all occasions, but I would not call it "reliable"... It is new car and that is why you have warranty... so it is sometimes a matter of asking right people right questions..

That sounds like a piece of junk

  11. The LC I don't think is bad value at all - it's more natural competitor is the 6 series, E class coupe, Maserati Gran Cabrio. In many ways it is the true successor to the Mk4 Supra as a truly large sporting coupe. The new supra is not a large car, and neither is an RCF. They are midsized cars.

I don't think £70k is a terrible starting point for such a car given it's remit to go head to head with 6 and new 8 series BMWs, Maserati coupes etc. It has the newer 10spd box the RCF doesn't have, a more striking design and probably more luxurious appointments. An RCF's competitor is a C63, M5, RS5 sort of car. This is the class above.

I'd love an RCF but I think if I had the money I would buy the LC. It looks terrific.

  12. Wow even more impressed! I’m lucky to get 350 from a tank full. I dry smoothly with the occaisional heavy right foot, but my work commute is very stop start urban which does the consumption no favours. This is why I’m considering an IS 300h, I think most of my mileage would play to its strengths

My commute is from Loch Long to Glencoe. The road is a gentle 40/50mph a lot of the way and the car only sees 60 plus on the clearer sections. It uses barely more fuel than my e350cdi did

  13. As a fellow GS250 driver I salute you sir.  On a long mway  run I’ve never bettered 42. My average is 29 without much motorway running. Do you run in eco mode all the time? What fuel do you use?

My average is 39 in it. I use Esso fuel nothing super unless I’m at Tesco and put in the 99 stuff.

My car is driven all over Scotland and I tend to obey speed limits. If I lived some place flatter it would do 50mpg and I’d get 600 plus from the tank but normally a full tank is out of ideas by 500 miles

  14. This is what I just read in car magazine about Merc C-class and this was said be magazine reviewer - the car is superbly built, reliable and has cast iron image and Audi you can take excellent build quality, practicality and efficient engines. They always praise MB relaibility and Audi interior quality.
It looks like these car reviews do not know anything about issues everyone mentions online!

They only run a new car.

Give them an 80k miles 2 owner Mercedes E class and see how they’ll get on ;)
