Engine Treatments

Recommended Posts

Hi there.  Would anyone recommend using engine and fuel  treatments.  I am sure I have read somewhere that Lexus owners don't recommend using them, but don't know why. Thanks Debs  :winky:

remeber Gordon saying something about not using slick 50 and on a similar note what about engine flushes as in an oil additive to aid the changing of the oil ?

Some people use an injector cleaner in their fuel, but if using this make sure you follow instructions as some can damage the Cat.

As for oil additives, I would leave alone,Slick got fined last year for false claims.

I'm sure Colin will be along later to give you his valued opinion

Slick 50 and some of the other engine oil treatments claim to contain PTFE (polytetrafluoroethlene), or Teflon (a DuPont trademark), which creates a firction-free contact between the moving parts.

In my opinion, for PTFE to work as it was designed to do, each moving part would have to be coated in a microfine layer of PTFE.

Now, PTFE is OK for the hotplate of irons, frying pans etc, which are not friction surfaces. But, any PTFE coated component acting against another coated component would very soon lose it effectiveness since PTFE is not particularly wettable (i.e. it does not like to stick to other surfaces) and would therfore soon fall away from the friction surfaces. Probably in just a few seconds.

I say your best approach is to use the highest grade synthetic oil and change the oil/filter every 5K or 3K if doing a lot of stop start driving.
