Rear Camera

Hi,

I have a 2004 RX300. The rear camera stopped working and now displays a fuzzy picture.

Does anybody know how to fix, or anybody with similar experience.

As far as I know, the car is out of warranty.

Depends what you mean by fuzzy. If the brightness, contrast & colour are still more or less OK, but images are blurred, water/gunge has almost certainly got onto the back of the lens or even the lens front has been badly scratched. Another possibility is that the actual sensor has come adrift internally so the lens no longer focuses on it properly. Have never tried to remove or disassemble the camera, but it should be possible to sort this sort of problem out.

If the image has gained a series of jiggling horizontal "stripes", it is probably a poor connection to the display or more likely to the camera. Slipping the connector off then on again a couple of times might cure it.

Yes Brightness, Contrast & Colour all OK - just seems to have lost its picture. Almost see an outline / movement through the dark picture that is shown. The screen is OK, satnav etc all works.

Is their a technique to getting at the camera, or do I just strip all the inside of the rear door down.

I have just taken the camera off and checked all connections, I think it is the camera that is bust. The screen is completely blank when the camera is not connected and jumps and flickers with some lines when it is connected.

The part no is 86790-48020 Anybody know where to get one cheaper than £800 from Lexus??

This is where it gets more difficult. You really need to beg/borrow/steal one to make sure it really is the camera. If it is, it is worthwhile (nothing to lose) carefully stripping it to see if any joints are loose or printed tracks cracked (use a magnifying-glass) - because it is lid-mounted and spends its life being thumped when you shut it. Perhaps a breakers yard could supply a replacement from a write-off??
