Head Gasket...

Hi all. Iam after some help, i recently had a problem with my is200 where the temp gage hit the red (HOT) and thought this could have been as i was sat in traffic for a long time, but then it started going up and down, ive added water to the radiator and the temp gage has now stayed at normal. I started the car lastnight (due in the garage today) and the temp gage stayed at normal. The was steam coming from the exhaust as i would expect as it was cold but when i the temp reach normal after leaving it run for 20mins i gave it a big rev and alot of smoke came from the exhaust, would this be signs of the head has gone? or is on its way as dont seem to have lost any power in it.
