When starting my 250 it ticks over at around 1200-1300rpm and when put into any other gear apart from park it bongs and tells me to "shift to p range" but the rpm drops to 800-900 ish

Is this normal?

The "Shift to P range" message normally only comes on:
1. The engine is running and a door is open, and the car is in any gear except P

2. The car loses detection of the key fob (e.g. because the key Battery is low - there is a separate key Battery low message, but you don't always get it)

3. You stop the engine with the car in any gear except P or N.

It should not come on if you get in, close the door, put the gear lever in P and press start, then select D.
