Ecu Reset Impact On Mpg

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Could an ECU reset help improve MPG?

I've read lots of people quoting 30+mpg as a regular figure. Some suggesting it was without trying that hard

But so far, even babying my 250 at <3k rpm, the best I've managed on a reasonable run is 27. That was mixed motorway and reasonably flowing town.

If that is what it is then so be it. But if there are ways to improve that figure it would be a bonus.

Thanks.

Chris

It's defiantly worth a try, I need to do it on my is220d as my mpg is really low. Have a search for the subject, it's recommended a lot in threads on this forum. It needs to be done over night ideally, I did it for around half an hour and nothing happened

Sounds about right to me Chris. The computer is about 3 mpg over optermistic so mine is averaging about 30 since owning the car about 12k. I'm a steady driver, my Aviva driving app told me so. ;-). But in a moment of madness with a heavy foot in sport mode you can see the needle moving! At the end of the day it's a heavy car with an old tech but reliable motor. Just thank your lucky stars you didn't but the diesel version.

Thanks Guys.

Obviously its early days but I've managed 27 which would net out at 24-5 if thats the case. And that's with no harsh acceleration/sports mode etc.

If I could get closer to a net 30 I'd be more than happy - allowing for the weight and other trade offs.

I'll have another search. I think it was having a moment earlier. A basic search for mpg across all forums brought up 10 pages, but when I did an advanced search for the same phrase limited to the 220/250 forum it said there were no results!

The best way to reduce fuel usage and increase mpg is to not press too hard on... the brake. When you accelerate, you're burning fuel to get up to speed, but that energy is in the motion of the car. Every time you brake, you're throwing that energy away (less so in the hybrids if you brake gently).

Far better to anticipate the road ahead and ease off the gas early rather than brake.

Have a look at Honest John real mpg, bit more realistic than the manufacturers figures!

I'm not going by manufacturers figures. I'm going by figures reported on here.

On that basis it seems ( after a very breif period of ownership) that thers could be room for improvement.
