What is the egr valve and how can I clean it ?

Use the search feature. There are loads of posts about it and links to Youtube vids too. If you are slightly mechanical it really is very easy to do. If most of your driving is short local trips you would be wise to check it every 8000 miles or so. I had a 220d before I got my current 250.
